| From Shame To Glory |

V: This morning’s Power for Today reminds us of the “callousness” and “degradation” of the cross of Jesus.
D: "Callousness” means “uncaring and cold.” “Degradation” means “humiliation.”
V: In other words, the people who crucified Jesus placed no value on His life.
D: Right. In fact, they placed more value on his clothing.
V: Yes, the soldiers tried to “vie” (or compete) for his clothes.
D: The author says that “every shred of dignity has been removed.” Do you know what that means?
V: Well, a “shred” is a small piece of something. So, he is saying that there is not even a small piece of dignity left to give to Jesus.
D: The author says that even the worst people are given “some semblance of respect” (which means something that at least “looks like” respect.
V: Right. It was a terrible scene that day.
D: And if we were there, what would we be doing? Are we the soldiers?
V: The author also asks if we are “the chiding” (or the insulting) religious leaders.
D: He says that at the cross, we see ourselves “without the filters that buffer the brutality.” Does that make sense?
V: “Filters” are special lens used with cameras to “buffer” something, or make something look different. So, I think he is saying that there are no filters at the cross.
D: In other words, we can now see clearly the brutality or violence of humanity.
V: Yes. But the cross can also help us to clearly see the love and forgiveness of God.
D: You’re right. As the author says, we are taken from the cross of shame to the throne room of God.
V: Well, I’d rather live in the throne room. Well, time to start another day. Have a good one. |

비키: 오늘 본문은 예수님의 십자가 사건을 냉담하게 본 사람들과 십자가에 달려 죽으실 때까지 순종하신 예수님의 겸손함을 기억하게 해요.
단: ‘Callousness’는 차갑고 무관심한 것을 뜻하고 ‘degradation’은 겸손을 뜻하지요.
비키: 다른 말로 하면, 예수님을 십자가에 못 박은 사람들은 예수님의 삶에 아무 가치도 주지 않았다는 것이에요.
단: 맞아요. 군인들은 예수님의 옷에 더 관심이 있었어요.
비키: 그래요. 군인들은 예수님의 옷을 놓고 제비뽑기를 했지요.
단: 작가가 ‘every shred of dignity has been removed'라고 했어요. 무슨 뜻인지 아시겠어요?
비키: ‘Shred'는 작은 조각을 말하지요. 그러니까 작가가 말하는 것은 거기에는 예수님께 드릴 아무런 존귀함도 없었다는 것이에요.
단: 작가는 가장 나쁜 사람조차도 가식적인 존경 - 즉, 적어도 보이기에는 존경을 표하는 것 같은 것 - 은 받았다고 해요.
비키: 맞아요. 그 날의 광경은 정말 못 봐줄 것이었지요.
단: 우리가 거기에 있었다면 어떻게 행동했을까요? 우리도 군인들과 같았을까요?
비키: 작가는 우리가 종교지도자들을 나무랄 수 있었을까 묻고 있어요.
단: 작가는 십자가 앞에서 우리는 우리자신들이 ‘without the filters that buffer the brutality'를 본다고 해요. 이해가 되세요?
비키: ‘Filter'는 사진기의 특수 렌즈를 말하지요. 이것은 어떤 것을 지워버리거나 다르게 보이도록 하는 기능이 있지요. 그러니까 작가는 십자가 앞에서 아무런 변화도 없었다는 것을 말하려는 것 같아요.
단: 다른 말로 하면, 우리는 지금 인간성의 포악함이나 야만성을 분명히 볼 수 있다는 것이에요.
비키: 그래요. 하지만 십자가는 하나님의 사랑과 용서를 밝게 볼 수 있도록 도와주지요.
단: 맞았어요. 작가가 말한 것처럼 우리는 십자가의 부끄러움에서 하나님의 보좌로 옮겨졌지요.
비키: 나는 하나님의 보좌 안에 살고 싶어요. 또 하루를 시작해야 할 시간이군요. 좋은 하루 되세요. |
