| A Talk with the Father |
|
D: Did you know that only God has an ¡°impeccable¡± (or perfect) track record?
V: Yes. Today¡¯s author of Power for Today is saying that we can ¡°count on¡± (or rely on) God to hear us when we pray.
D: Even our President Abraham Lincoln said that he was ¡°driven¡± (or made to go) many times to his knees.
V: Right. He said that he had an ¡°overwhelming conviction¡± (or overpowering belief) that he had nowhere else to go.
D: This morning¡¯s author reminds us of the words of Jesus when He explained to his followers how to pray.
V: Jesus even told his followers to use the word ¡°Abba¡± for God.
D: The word ¡°Abba¡± is a very warm and tender word. The author calls it a ¡°homely family word,¡± which means that it reminds people of the warm love between family members in a home.
V: At the same time, he says that we should not think that prayer is an ¡°open sesame¡± to every closed door. Can you explain what that means?
D: I think you know. In an old story from Arabia, a man used the words ¡°open sesame¡± as magic to open a door to a room that had great treasures.
V: So, the author is saying that we cannot control God, and that God¡¯s promises are not ¡°unconditional.¡±
D: This means that prayer does have conditions, and that God will answer our prayers in ways that He sees best for us.
V: So, when we do not get the answer we want, we should not think that God is not listening.
D: Well said. As the English poet Tennyson wrote, ¡°More things are ¡®wrought¡¯ (or made) by prayer than this world dreams of.¡±
V: So, let¡¯s keep praying. And let¡¯s thank God for every answer. And have a good one.
D: You too. |
