| Serving His Guests |

| “The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” ( Mark 10:45 , NRSV ) |

John, when he tells us of Jesus’ “last supper” with His disciples, tells us nothing of their eating and drinking. He does tell us about Jesus’ humble act of service. What a menial - and unappetizing - job! Yet, what could be a clearer picture of what our communion with one another ought to be as we participate in the “Lord’s Supper”?
John also tells us that Jesus, on this same occasion, instructed His disciples to imitate Him. He didn’t have in mind a mere copying of a feature or two of His manners. Rather, He insisted that His disciples conduct themselves as He did, resolving to put the service to others that encourages righteous life ahead of any personal sense of status or advantage. Indeed, if a disciple’s relationship with Jesus is to be one of genuine faith, it will be because the disciple resembles his or her Lord. Moreover, what this resemblance is all about is how we treat others. To be a guest at Jesus’ table is - to be sure - the greatest of privileges. To serve His guests is the truest discipleship. |

| 하나님의 손님들을 대접하기 |

| “인자의 온 것은 섬김을 받으려 함이 아니라 도리어 섬기려 하고 자기 목숨을 많은 사람의 대속물로 주려 함이니라.” ( 마가복음 10:45) |

요한은 제자들과 함께 나누신 예수님의 ‘최후의 만찬’을 이야기하면서 먹고 마신 것에 대해 일체 언급하고 있지 않습니다. 요한이 전하고 있는 것은 섬기시는 예수님의 겸손입니다. 예수님께서 하신 일이 얼마나 보잘 것 없고 식욕을 떨어뜨리는 것입니까? 그러나 주님의 만찬(성찬식)에 참여할 때 우리가 서로를 어떻게 대접해야 하는지 이보다 더 명확한 그림으로 제시할 수는 없을 것입니다.
요한은 또 예수님께서 만찬을 나누시면서 제자들에게 자신을 본받으라고 가르치셨다고 우리에게 전해주고 있습니다. 그것은 예수님께서 손수 보여주신 한두 가지 예법을 단순히 흉내 내는 것을 마음에 두고 하신 말씀이 아닙니다. 오히려 예수님께서는 제자들이 자신이 했던 그대로 행하기를 강조하셨습니다. 즉, 어떠한 개인적 신분이나 기득권에 우선하는 의로운 삶을 격려하여 다른 사람을 섬기는 삶을 결심하기를 원하셨습니다. 정말이지 예수님과 제자의 관계가 진실한 믿음으로 이어진 것이라면 그것은 제자가 스승이신 주님을 닮았기 때문입니다. 더 나아가 닮음의 의미는 우리가 다른 사람을 어떻게 대접하느냐 하는 것입니다. 예수님의 식탁에 손님이 되는 것은 정말 큰 특권입니다. 그리고 손님을 대접하는 것이 제자의 가장 진실된 도리입니다. |
