| The Trouble With Jealousy |

| “But Jephthah said to the elders of the land of Gilead, ‘You forced me to leave my father’s house. You hate me! So why are you coming to me now that you are having trouble?” ( Judges 11:7 , NIV ) |

Pretty common story. The legitimate brothers, fearing they might have to share, hang up on the older, illegitimate brother, Jephthah, and force him to leave his home in Gilead.
Later the Gilead elders got scared and approach Jephthah, now a strong soldier, and beg him to come and be their leader and fight the Ammonites. His response was normal. “You ran me off. Why ask me to help?”
Jephthah finally agrees to fight but with one stipulation. If God helps him win, then he will be the new leader of Gilead.
God stood by Jephthah and guided his leadership.
Jealous, the brothers kicked him out; desperate, they begged him to come back. Ironic, isn’t it? With God’s help, Jephthah wins big! A little humiliating for the brothers. Do you think they were ever really happy with this situation?
Jealousy always sets in motion a continuing series of ruinous circumstances.
For jealous people, words spoken or not, there will always be trouble. I’m not certain I have the saying correct, but it goes something like this. “You’ll always eat your foolish words.” Jephthah’s brothers definitely did. |

| “입다가 길르앗 장로들에게 이르되, 너희가 전에 나를 미워하여 내 아버지 집에서 쫓아내지 아니하였느냐? 이제 너희가 환난을 당하였다고 어찌하여 내게 왔느냐?” ( 사사기 11:7) |

매우 흔한 이야기입니다. 적자 출신의 형제들이 재산 분배에 따른 불이익을 우려하여 자신들보다 연장자이지만 서자 출신인 입다에게 떼 지어 가서 길르앗을 떠나게 했습니다.
훗날 길르앗의 장로들이 겁에 질려 어엿한 군인이 된 입다를 찾아왔습니다. 돌아와 자신들의 지도자가 되서 암몬 족속과 싸워달라고 간청했습니다. 입다는 예사로이 반응했습니다. “전에 나를 쫓아내더니 지금 내게 도움을 구하느냐?”
마침내 입다는 한 가지 조건 하에 싸움에 참가합니다. 하나님의 도움으로 이기게 되면, 입다가 길르앗의 새 지도자가 될 것입니다.
하나님이 입다와 함께 하시고 그가 좋은 지도자가 되도록 인도해 주셨습니다.
시기심에 차서 형제들은 입다를 내쫓았다가, 절박해져서야 돌아오라고 간청했습니다. 아이러니지요? 하나님의 도움으로 입다는 대승을 거두었습니다! 형제들에게는 다소 굴욕적이었지요. 그들이 이 상황을 정말로 흡족해 했을까요?
언제나 시기심 때문에 상황을 끔찍하게 몰고 가는 일이 연이어집니다.
말을 하든지 안 하든지, 시기심에 찬 사람은 늘 문제가 있기 마련입니다. 정확한지 잘 모르겠지만 이런 속담이 있습니다. “자기 꾀에 빠지다.” 입다의 형제들이 바로 그러했습니다. |
