Jesus Heals a Man at a Pool1Later, Jesus went to Jerusalem for a special Jewish festival. 2In Jerusalem there is a pool with five covered porches. In Aramaic* it is called Bethzatha*. This pool is near the Sheep Gate. 3Many sick people were lying on the porches beside the pool. Some of them were blind, some were crippled, and some were paralyzed.* 4* 5One of the men lying there had been sick for 38 years. 6Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been sick for a very long time. So he asked him, “Do you want to be well?” 7The sick man answered, “Sir, there is no one to help me get into the water when it starts moving. I try to be the first one into the water. But when I try, someone else always goes in before I can.” 8Then Jesus said, “Stand up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9Immediately the man was well. He picked up his mat and started walking.
The day all this happened was a Sabbath* day. 10So some Jews said to the man who had been healed, “Today is the Sabbath. It is against our law for you to carry your mat on the Sabbath day.” 11But he answered, “The man who made me well told me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’” 12They asked him, “Who is the man who told you to pick up your mat and walk?” 13But the man who had been healed did not know who it was. There were many people there, and Jesus had left. 14Later, Jesus found the man at the Temple* and said to him, “See, you are well now. But stop sinning or something worse may happen to you!” 15Then the man left and went back to the Jews who questioned him. He told them that Jesus was the one who made him well. 16Jesus was doing all this on the Sabbath day. So these Jews began trying to make him stop. 17But he said to them, “My Father never stops working, and so I work too.” 18This made them try harder to kill him. They said, “First this man was breaking the law about the Sabbath day. Then he said that God is his Father! He is making himself equal with God!”
Jesus Has God’s Authority 19But Jesus answered, “I assure you that the Son can do nothing alone. He does only what he sees his Father doing. The Son does the same things that the Father does. 20The Father loves the Son and shows him everything he does. This man was healed. But the Father will show the Son greater things than this to do. Then you will all be amazed. 21The Father raises the dead and gives them life. In the same way, the Son gives life to those he wants to. 22“Also, the Father judges no one. He has given the Son power to do all the judging. 23God did this so that all people will respect the Son the same as they respect the Father. Anyone who does not respect the Son does not respect the Father. He is the one who sent the Son. 24“I assure you, anyone who hears what I say and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life. They will not be judged guilty. They have already left death and have entered into life. 25Believe me, an important time is coming. That time is already here. People who are dead will hear the voice of the Son of God. And those who listen will live. 26Life comes from the Father himself. So the Father has also allowed the Son to give life. 27And the Father has given him the power to judge all people because he is the Son of Man*. 28“Don’t be surprised at this. A time is coming when all people who are dead and in their graves will hear his voice. 29Then they will come out of their graves. Those who did good in this life will rise and have eternal life. But those who did evil will rise to be judged guilty. 30“I can do nothing alone. I judge only the way I am told. And my judgment is right, because I am not trying to please myself. I want only to please the one who sent me.
Jesus Says More to the Jewish Leaders 31“If I tell people about myself, they cannot be sure that what I say is true. 32But there is someone else who tells people about me, and I know that what he says about me is true. 33“You sent men to John*, and he told you what is true. 34I don’t need anyone to tell people about me, but I remind you of what John said so that you can be saved. 35John was like a lamp that burned and gave light, and you were happy to enjoy his light for a while. 36“But I have a proof about myself that is greater than anything John said. The things I do are my proof. These are what my Father gave me to do. They show that the Father sent me. 37And the Father who sent me has given proof about me himself. But you have never heard his voice. You have never seen what he looks like. 38The Father’s teaching does not live in you, because you don’t believe in the one the Father sent. 39You carefully study the Scriptures*. You think that they give you eternal life. These same Scriptures tell about me! 40But you refuse to come to me to have that life. 41“I don’t want praise from you or any other human. 42But I know you - I know that you have no love for God. 43I have come from my Father and speak for him, but you don’t accept me. But when other people come speaking only for themselves, you accept them. 44You like to have praise from each other. But you never try to get the praise that comes from the only God. So how can you believe? 45Don’t think that I will be the one to stand before the Father and accuse you. Moses* is the one to accuse you. And he is the one you hoped would save you. 46If you really believed Moses, you would believe me, because he wrote about me. 47But you don’t believe what he wrote, so you can’t believe what I say.” |

베드자다 못에서 한 병자를 고치시다 1얼마 뒤에, 예수께서 유대 사람의 명절을 지키러 예루살렘으로 올라가셨다. 2예루살렘에는 아람 말*로 베드자다*라고 하는 못이 있었다. 그 못은 ‘양의 문’* 가까이에 있었다. 그리고 못 둘레에는 다섯 개의 행각*이 서 있었다. 3여기에 눈먼 사람, 다리를 저는 사람, 중풍병 환자 같은 많은 병자들이 누워 있었다. 4* 5그곳에 있는 사람 가운데에는 삼십팔 년 동안 다리를 못 쓰고 누워 있는 남자가 있었다. 6예수께서 그 사람을 보시고 병이 아주 오래되었다는 것을 아셨다. 예수께서 그에게 물으셨다. “네 병이 낫기를 바라느냐?” 7그 사람이 대답하였다. “네, 선생님. 그렇지만 물이 움직일 때, 저를 도와서 못 안으로 들어가게 해 줄 사람이 없습니다. 저 혼자 들어가려고 하는 동안에 다른 사람이 먼저 들어가 버립니다.” 8그러자 예수께서 말씀하셨다. “일어나라! 네 자리를 걷어 가지고 걸어가거라.” 9곧바로 그의 병이 나았다. 그는 자리를 걷어 가지고 걸어갔다.
그날은 안식일*이었다. 10그래서 유대 사람들은 병이 나은 사람에게 이렇게 말하였다. “오늘은 안식일이오. 안식일에 자리를 들고 가는 것은 법에 어긋나오.” 11그가 대답하였다. “내 병을 고쳐 주신 분이 ‘자리를 들고 걸어가거라.’ 하고 말씀하셨소.” 12유대 사람들이 그에게 물었다. “당신더러 자리를 들고 걸어가라고 한 그 사람이 누구요?” 13그러나 병이 나은 사람은 자기를 고쳐 주신 분이 누구인지 몰랐다. 예수께서 그곳에 있던 무리 속으로 사라지셨기 때문이다. 14그 뒤에 예수께서 그 사람을 성전*에서 만나서 말씀하셨다. “보아라, 지금은 네가 말끔히 나았다. 다시는 죄를 짓지 말아라. 그렇지 않으면 더 나쁜 일이 네게 생길지도 모른다.” 15그 사람은 유대 사람들에게 가서 자기를 낫게 해 준 사람이 예수라고 말하였다. 16예수께서 이런 일들을 안식일에 하고 계셨으므로, 유대 사람들은 예수를 박해하기 시작하였다. 17그러나 예수께서 그들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “내 아버지께서는 바로 오늘까지도 쉬지 않고 일하고 계신다. 그래서 나도 일한다.” 18이 말씀 때문에 유대 사람들은 더욱 예수를 죽이고 싶어하였다. 그것은 예수께서 안식일을 지키지 않을 뿐만 아니라, 하나님을 자기의 아버지라고 불러서 자신을 하나님과 같은 자리에 올려놓았기 때문이다.
하나님의 권한을 가지신 예수 19예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “내가 진정으로 말한다. 아들은 혼자만의 생각으로는 아무 일도 할 수 없다. 그는 아버지께서 하시는 일을 보고 그 일을 따라 할 뿐이다. 아버지께서 무슨 일을 하시든지 아들도 그 일을 한다. 20아버지께서는 아들을 사랑하시며, 아들에게 아버지께서 하시는 일을 모두 보여 주신다. 그러나 아버지께서는 이 사람의 병을 고치는 일보다 더 놀라운 일들을 아들에게 보여 주실 것이다. 너희는 그 일들을 보고 놀랄 것이다. 21아버지께서 죽은 사람들을 다시 일으키어 그들에게 생명을 주시는 것과 마찬가지로, 아들도 아들이 살리고 싶은 사람들에게 생명을 준다. 22더구나 아버지께서는 아무도 심판하지 않으시고, 심판할 일을 모두 아들에게 맡기셨다. 23그것은, 모든 사람이 아버지를 존경하는 것처럼 아들도 존경하게 하려는 것이다. 아들을 존경하지 않는 사람은, 아들을 보내신 아버지를 존경하지 않는 것이다. 24내가 진정으로 말한다. 누구든지 내 말을 듣고 나를 보내신 분을 믿는 사람은 영원한 생명을 얻었으며, 심판을 받지 않을 것이다. 그는 이미 죽음을 벗어나 생명으로 들어섰다. 25내가 진정으로 말한다. 죽은 사람들이 하나님의 아들의 목소리를 들을 때가 온다. 지금이 바로 그때이다. 그리고 그 목소리를 듣는 사람들은 살 것이다. 26그것은 아버지께서 자기 안에 생명을 가지고 계신 것처럼, 아들도 자기 안에 생명을 가지도록 허락하셨기 때문이다. 27또 아버지께서는 아들에게 모든 사람을 심판할 권한을 주셨다. 그가 사람의 아들*이기 때문이다. 28너희는 이 말에 놀라지 말아라. 무덤 속에 있는 사람들이 모두 그의 목소리를 듣고 29무덤에서 나올 때가 올 것이다. 그때에 선한 일을 한 사람들은 일어나 생명을 얻고, 악한 일을 한 사람들은 일어나 정죄받을 것이다.
유대 사람들에게 계속 말씀하시다 30나는 아무것도 내 마음대로 할 수 없다. 나는 아버지께서 하라고 하시는 대로 심판한다. 그러니 내 심판은 올바르다. 그것은 내가 내 뜻대로 하지 않고, 나를 보내신 분의 뜻대로 하기 때문이다. 31내가 나 자신에 대하여 증언하면, 내 증언은 참되지 못하다. 32나를 위하여 증언해 주는 사람이 따로 있다. 나는, 나에 대한 그의 증언이 참되다는 것을 안다. 33너희가 요한에게 사람들을 보냈을 때, 그는 진리에 대하여 증언하였다. 34나는 사람의 증언이 필요하지 않다. 다만 너희가 구원*을 받게 하려고 이 말을 하는 것이다. 35요한은 밝게 타오르며 빛을 내는 등불이었다. 너희는 그의 빛을 보고 한동안 기뻐하려 하였다. 36그러나 내게는 요한의 증언보다 더 무게 있는 증언이 있다. 나는 아버지께서 내게 완수하라고 맡기신 일들을 하고 있다. 그러니 내가 하고 있는 바로 그 일들이, 아버지께서 나를 보내셨다는 것을 증언한다. 37그리고 나를 보내신 아버지께서 몸소 나에 대하여 증언하셨다. 그러나 너희는 한 번도 그분의 목소리를 듣지 않았고, 그분의 모습을 보지도 않았다. 38그리고 그분의 말씀을 너희 마음에 새겨 두지도 않는다. 너희가 아버지께서 보내신 이를 믿지 않기 때문이다. 39너희는 성경*에서 영원한 생명을 찾으리라고 생각하여 부지런히 성경*을 연구한다. 바로 그 성경*이 나에 대하여 증언하고 있다. 40그러나 너희는 생명을 얻으러 나에게 오려고 하지 않는다. 41나는 사람에게서 영광을 얻으려 하지 않는다. 42나는 너희 속에 하나님에 대한 사랑이 없다는 것을 안다. 43나는 내 아버지의 이름으로 왔다. 그러나 너희는 나를 받아들이지 않는다. 그러나 어떤 사람이 자기 이름으로 오면, 너희는 그를 받아들일 것이다. 44너희는 서로 영광을 주고받으면서, 오직 한 분이신 하나님의 영광은 얻으려고 애쓰지 않는다. 그러니 너희가 어떻게 믿을 수 있겠느냐? 45그러나 내가 너희를 걸어서 아버지께 고발하리라고는 생각하지 말아라. 너희가 희망을 걸어 온 모세가 오히려 너희를 고발할 것이다. 46만일 너희가 모세를 믿었더라면 나를 믿을 것이다. 모세가 기록한 것이 나를 두고 한 것이기 때문이다. 47너희가 모세의 글도 믿지 않으니, 어떻게 내 말을 믿겠느냐?” |
