Christ Comes to the World1Before the world began, the Word* was there. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was there with God in the beginning. 3Everything was made through him, and nothing was made without him. 4In him there was life, and that life was a light for the people of the world. 5The light* shines in the darkness*, and the darkness has not defeated* it. 6There was a man named John*, who was sent by God. 7He came to tell people about the light. Through him all people could hear about the light and believe. 8John was not the light. But he came to tell people about the light. 9The true light was coming into the world. This is the true light that gives light to all people. 10The Word was already in the world. The world was made through him, but the world did not know him. 11He came to the world that was his own. And his own people did not accept him. 12But some people did accept him. They believed in him, and he gave them the right to become children of God. 13They became God’s children, but not in the way babies are usually born. It was not because of any human desire or plan. They were born from God himself. 14The Word became a man and lived among us. We saw his divine greatness* - the greatness that belongs to the only Son of the Father. The Word was full of grace* and truth. 15John told people about him. He said loudly, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘The one who is coming after me is greater than I am, because he was living before I was even born.’” 16Yes, the Word was full of grace and truth, and from him we all received one blessing after another*. 17That is, the law was given to us through Moses*, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God. The only Son is the one who has shown us what God is like. He is himself God and is very close to the Father.*
John Tells About the Messiah (Mt. 3:1-12; Mk. 1:1-8; Lk. 3:1-9, 15-17) 19The Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent some priests and Levites* to John* to ask him, “Who are you?” He told them the truth. 20Without any hesitation he said openly and plainly, “I am not the Messiah*.” 21They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah*?”
He answered, “No, I am not Elijah.”
They asked, “Are you the Prophet*?”
He answered, “No, I am not the Prophet.” 22Then they said, “Who are you? Tell us about yourself. Give us an answer to tell the people who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23John told them the words of the prophet* Isaiah:
“I am the voice of someone shouting in the desert: ‘Make a straight road ready for the Lord.’”* 24These Jews were sent from the Pharisees*. 25They said to John, “You say you are not the Messiah. You say you are not Elijah or the Prophet. Then why do you baptize* people?” 26John answered, “I baptize people with water. But there is someone here with you that you don’t know. 27He is the one who is coming later. I am not good enough to be the slave who unties the strings on his sandals.” 28These things all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan River. This is where John was baptizing people.
Jesus, the Lamb of God 29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb* of God. He takes away the sins of the world! 30This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘There is a man coming after me who is greater than I am, because he was living even before I was born.’ 31I did not know who he was. But I came baptizing people with water so that Israel* could know that he is the Messiah*.” 32-33Then John said, “I also did not know who the Messiah was. But the one who sent me to baptize* with water told me, ‘You will see the Spirit* come down and rest on a man. He is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I have seen this happen. I saw the Spirit come down from heaven like a dove and rest on this man. 34So this is what I tell people: ‘He is the Son of God.’”
The First Followers of Jesus 35The next day John was there again and had two of his followers with him. 36He saw Jesus walking by and said, “Look, the Lamb* of God!” 37The two followers heard him say this, so they followed Jesus. 38Jesus turned and saw the two men following him. He asked, “What do you want?”
They said, “Rabbi, where are you staying?” (“Rabbi” means “Teacher.”) 39He answered, “Come with me and you will see.” So the two men went with him. They saw the place where he was staying, and they stayed there with him that day. It was about four o’clock. 40These men followed Jesus after they had heard about him from John. One of them was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter. 41The first thing Andrew did was to go and find his brother Simon. Andrew said to him, “We have found the Messiah*.” (“Messiah” means “Christ.”*) 42Then Andrew brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon, the son of John. You will be called Cephas.” (“Cephas” means “Peter.”*) 43The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He met Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44Philip was from the town of Bethsaida, the same as Andrew and Peter. 45Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the man that Moses* wrote about in the law. The prophets* wrote about him too. He is Jesus, the son of Joseph. He is from Nazareth.” 46But Nathanael said to Philip, “Nazareth! Can anything good come from Nazareth?”
Philip answered, “Come and see.” 47Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said, “This man coming is a true Israelite*, one you can trust*.” 48Nathanael asked, “How do you know me?”
Jesus answered, “I saw you when you were under the fig tree, before Philip told you about me.” 49Then Nathanael said, “Teacher, you are the Son of God. You are the King of Israel*.” 50Jesus said to him, “Do you believe this just because I said I saw you under the fig tree? You will see much greater things than that!” 51Then he said, “Believe me when I say that you will all see heaven open. You will see ‘angels of God going up and coming down’* on the Son of Man*.” |

그리스도께서 세상에 오시다 1맨 처음, 세상이 시작되기 전에 말씀이 계셨다. 그 말씀은 하나님과 함께 계셨고, 말씀이 곧 하나님이셨다. 2그분(그리스도)은 맨 처음에 하나님과 함께 계셨다. 3모든 것이 그분(말씀)을 통하여 생겨났고, 그분 없이는 아무것도 생겨나지 않았다. 4그분 안에는 생명이 있었다. 이 생명은 모든 사람을 비추는 빛이었다. 5빛이 어둠 속에서 비치나, 어둠이 그 빛을 알지 못하였다.* 6하나님께서 보내신 사람이 있었다. 그의 이름은 요한*이었다. 7그는 사람들에게 빛(그리스도)에 관한 것을 알리려고 왔다. 그것은, 모든 사람이 그를 통하여 빛에 관하여 듣고 믿게 하려는 것이었다. 8요한 스스로가 그 빛은 아니었다. 그는 오직 그 빛에 관하여 증언하는 사람으로 왔을 뿐이다. 9모든 사람을 비추는* 참 빛이 세상으로 오고 있었다. 10그분은 세상에 계셨다. 그리고 세상이 그분을 통하여 만들어졌는데도, 세상은 그분을 알아보지 못하였다. 11그분이 자기 땅에 오셨으나, 그분의 백성은 그분을 맞아들이지 않았다. 12그러나 그분을 맞아들인 사람들, 곧 그분을 믿은 사람들에게는 하나님의 자녀가 되는 특권을 주셨다. 13그들은 자연적인 방법으로 태어난 자녀가 아니다. 그들은 인간적인 욕망에 따라 태어나지도 않았고, 어떤 남편의 결정에 따라 태어나지도 않았다. 그들은 하나님께로부터 태어났다. 14말씀*은 사람이 되어 우리 가운데 사셨다. 우리는 그분의 영광을 보았다. 그 영광은 아버지(하나님)의 외아드님에게 따르는 영광이었다. 그리고 그분께는 은혜*와 진리*가 넘쳐났다. 15(요한은 사람들에게 그분에 대해 증언하여 이렇게 외쳤다. “내가 ‘내 뒤에 오시는 분은 나보다 훨씬 더 위대하십니다. 그분이 나보다 먼저 계셨기 때문입니다.’라고 말한 적이 있습니다. 이분이 내가 말하던 바로 그분이십니다.”) 16우리는 모두 그분의 흘러넘치는 은혜에서 복을 넘치게 받았다. 17하나님께서 율법*은 모세를 통하여 주셨으나, 은혜와 진리는 예수 그리스도를 통하여 주셨기 때문이다. 18어느 누구도 하나님을 뵌 적이 없다. 그런데 외아드님 스스로가 하나님이시며, 아버지와 가장 가까운 분이시다. 그분께서 우리에게 하나님이 어떤 분이신가를 보여 주셨다.
요한이 예수에 관하여 사람들에게 알리다 (마 3:1-12; 막 1:2-8; 눅 3:15-17) 19예루살렘의 유대 사람들이 제사장들과 레위 사람*들을 요한에게 보내어, 그가 누구인지 물어보게 하였다. 20요한은 조금도 숨기지 않고 분명하게 대답하였다. “나는 그리스도*가 아닙니다.” 21그들이 그에게 물었다. “그러면 당신은 누구입니까? 엘리야입니까?”
요한은 “아닙니다. 나는 엘리야가 아닙니다.”라고 대답하였다.
그들이 다시 물었다. “그러면 ‘그 예언자’입니까?”
그가 대답하였다. “아닙니다. 나는 ‘그 예언자’가 아닙니다.” 22그들이 마지막으로 물었다. “그러면 당신은 누구입니까? 우리 물음에 답을 좀 해 주십시오. 그래야 우리를 보낸 사람들에게 가서 당신이 누구인지 말할 수 있겠습니다. 당신이 누구인지 말해 주십시오.” 23요한은 예언자 이사야*의 말로 그들의 물음에 대답하였다.
“나는 ‘주의 길을 곧게 하여라.’라고 광야에서 외치는 이의 목소리입니다.”사 40:3 24보냄을 받은 사람들 가운데에는 바리새파* 사람들도 몇이 있었다. 25그들이 요한에게 물었다. “당신이 그리스도*도 아니고, 엘리야*도 아니고, ‘그 예언자’*도 아니라면, 어찌하여 세례*를 줍니까?” 26요한이 대답하였다. “나는 물로 세례*를 주고 있습니다. 그러나 여러분 가운데에는 여러분이 모르는 어떤 분이 서 계십니다. 27그분이 바로 내 뒤에 오시는 분이십니다. 나는 그분의 신발 끈을 풀어 드릴 만한 사람도 못 됩니다.” 28이 일은 요단 강* 건너편 베다니 마을*에서 있었던 일이다. 요한은 그곳에서 사람들에게 세례*를 주었다. 29이튿날, 요한은 예수께서 자기에게로 오시는 것을 보고 이렇게 말하였다. “보십시오! 세상의 죄를 없애 주실 하나님의 어린 양*께서 오십니다. 30내가 ‘내 뒤에 오시는 분은 나보다 위대하십니다. 그분이 나보다 먼저 계셨기 때문입니다.’라고 말한 적이 있습니다. 이분이 내가 말하던 바로 그분이십니다. 31나 자신도 누가 그분일지 몰랐습니다. 그러나 내가 와서 물로 세례*를 주는 것은, 이스라엘에게 누가 그분인가를 알리려는 것입니다.” 32그런 다음 요한은 이렇게 증언하였다. “나는 성령*께서 비둘기처럼 하늘에서 내려와 그분 위에 머무는 것을 보았습니다. 33나도 처음에는 그분을 알아보지 못하였습니다. 그러나 나를 보내어 물로 세례를 주게 하신 분께서 내게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. ‘너는 성령이 내려와 어떤 사람 위에 머무는 것을 볼 것이다. 그 사람이 성령으로 세례를 줄 사람이다.’ 34나는 하나님께서 말씀하신 것을 이분에게서 그대로 다 보았습니다. 그래서 이분이 하나님의 아들이라고 증언하는 것입니다.”
예수를 맨 먼저 따른 사람들 35다음 날 요한은 제자 두 사람과 함께 다시 그곳에 와 있었다. 36그는 예수께서 지나가시는 것을 보고 말하였다. “보아라! 하나님의 어린 양*이시다!” 37요한과 함께 있던 두 제자가 이 말을 듣고 예수의 뒤를 따라갔다. 38예수께서 몸을 돌려, 그들이 따라오는 것을 보고 물으셨다. “너희가 무엇을 찾느냐?”
그들이 말하였다. “랍비님, 어디에 묵고 계십니까?” (‘랍비’는 선생님이라는 뜻이다.) 39예수께서 대답하셨다. “와서 보아라.” 그래서 두 사람이 예수를 따라갔다. 그들은 예수께서 묵고 계신 곳을 보고, 그날을 그분과 함께 지냈다. 때는 오후 네 시쯤이었다. 40요한의 말을 듣고 예수를 따라간 두 사람 가운데 하나는 시몬 베드로의 동생 안드레였다. 41안드레는 곧장 자기 형 시몬에게 가서 “우리가 메시아를 찾았어요.”라고 말하였다. (‘메시아’라는 말은 ‘그리스도*’라는 뜻이다.) 42안드레는 형 시몬을 예수께 데리고 갔다. 예수께서 시몬을 보시고 말씀하셨다. “네가 요한의 아들 시몬이구나. 이제부터 너는 게바라고 불릴 것이다.” (‘게바’는 번역하면 ‘베드로’이다.)* 43다음 날 예수께서 갈릴리로 떠나기로 하셨다. 그때에 빌립을 보시고, “나를 따라오너라.”라고 말씀하셨다. 44빌립은 안드레와 베드로와 함께 벳새다*라는 마을에서 온 사람이었다. 45빌립은 나다나엘을 찾아가서 말하였다. “모세가 어떤 분에 관하여 율법 책에 쓴 것을 읽은 적이 있을 것입니다. 그리고 예언자들도 그분에 대해서 말한 적이 있습니다. 우리가 바로 그분을 만났습니다. 그분은 나사렛 마을 사람 요셉의 아들 예수이십니다.” 46그러나 나다나엘은 빌립에게 이렇게 대꾸하였다. “나사렛이라니! 나사렛에서 어떻게 좋은 것이 나올 수 있겠소?”
빌립이 대답하였다. “와서 보십시오.” 47예수께서 나다나엘이 가까이 오는 것을 보시고, 그를 두고 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “저 사람이야말로 참 이스라엘 사람이다. 그에게는 거짓이 없다.” 48나다나엘이 예수께 여쭈었다. “어떻게 저를 아십니까?”
예수께서 말씀하셨다. “빌립이 너를 찾아가기 전에, 네가 무화과나무 아래에 있는 것을 보았다.” 49그러자 나다나엘이 예수께 말하였다. “선생님, 선생님은 하나님의 아들이시요, 이스라엘의 왕이십니다.” 50예수께서 나다나엘에게 말씀하셨다. “네가 무화과나무 아래에 있는 것을 보았다고 하는 말을 듣고 나를 믿는구나. 그러나 너는 앞으로 그보다 훨씬 더 놀라운 일들을 볼 것이다!” 51그러고 나서 덧붙여 말씀하셨다. “내가 진정으로 너희에게 말한다. 너희는 하늘이 열리고 하나님의 천사들이 사람의 아들 위에 오르락내리락하는 것을 볼 것이다.” |
