The Jewish Leaders Plan to Kill Jesus (Mt. 26:1-5; Lk. 22:1-2; Jn. 11:45-53)1It was now only two days before the Passover* and the Festival of Unleavened Bread*. The leading priests and teachers of the law were trying to find a way to arrest Jesus without the people seeing it. Then they could kill him. 2They said, “But we cannot arrest Jesus during the festival. We don’t want the people to be angry and cause a riot.”
A Woman Does Something Special (Mt. 26:6-13; Jn. 12:1-8) 3Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper*. While he was eating there, a woman came to him. She had an alabaster* jar filled with expensive perfume made of pure nard*. She opened the jar and poured the perfume on Jesus’ head. 4Some of the followers there saw this. They were upset and complained to each other. They said, “Why waste that perfume? 5It was worth a full year’s pay*. It could have been sold and the money given to those who are poor.” And they told the woman what a bad thing she had done. 6Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why are you giving her such trouble? She did a very good thing for me. 7You will always have the poor with you*, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. 8This woman did the only thing she could do for me. She poured perfume on my body before I die to prepare it for burial. 9The Good News* will be told to people all over the world. And I can assure you that everywhere the Good News* is told, the story of what this woman did will also be told, and people will remember her.”
Judas Agrees to Help Jesus’ Enemies (Mt. 26:14-16; Lk. 22:3-6) 10Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve apostles*, went to talk to the leading priests about handing Jesus over to them. 11They were very happy about this, and they promised to pay him. So he waited for the best time to hand Jesus over to them.
The Passover Meal (Mt. 26:17-25; Lk. 22:7-14, 21-23; Jn. 13:21-30) 12It was now the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread* - the day the lambs were killed for the Passover*. Jesus’ followers came to him and said, “We will go and prepare everything for you to eat the Passover* meal. Where do you want us to have the meal?” 13Jesus sent two of his followers into the city. He said to them, “Go into the city. You will see a man carrying a jar of water. He will come to you. Follow him. 14He will go into a house. Tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks that you show us the room where he and his followers can eat the Passover meal.’ 15The owner will show you a large room upstairs that is ready for us. Prepare the meal for us there.” 16So the followers left and went into the city. Everything happened the way Jesus said. So the followers prepared the Passover meal. 17In the evening Jesus went to that house with the twelve apostles*. 18While they were all at the table eating, he said, “Believe me when I say that one of you will hand me over to my enemies - one of you eating with me now.” 19The followers were very sad to hear this. Each one said to Jesus, “Surely I am not the one!” 20Jesus answered, “It is one of you twelve - the one who is dipping his bread in the same bowl with me. 21The Son of Man* will suffer what the Scriptures* say will happen to him. But it will be very bad for the one who hands over the Son of Man* to be killed. It would be better for him if he had never been born.”
The Lord’s Supper (Mt. 26:26-30; Lk. 22:15-20; 1 Cor. 11:23-25) 22While they were eating, Jesus took some bread and thanked God for it. He broke off some pieces, gave them to his followers and said, “Take and eat this bread. It is my body.” 23Then he took a cup of wine, thanked God for it, and gave it to them. They all drank from the cup. 24Then he said, “This wine is my blood, which will be poured out for many to begin the new agreement* from God to his people. 25I want you to know, I will not drink this wine again until that day when I drink it in God’s kingdom* and the wine is new.” 26They all sang a song and then went out to the Mount of Olives*.
Jesus Says His Followers Will Leave Him (Mt. 26:31-35; Lk. 22:31-34; Jn. 13:36-38) 27Then Jesus told the followers, “You will all lose your faith. The Scripture*s say,
‘I will kill the shepherd, and the sheep will run away.’* 28But after I am killed, I will rise from death. Then I will go to Galilee. I will be there before you come.” 29Peter said, “All the other followers may lose their faith. But my faith will never be shaken.” 30Jesus answered, “The truth is, tonight you will say you don’t know me. You will say it three times before the rooster crows twice.” 31But Peter strongly protested, “I will never say I don’t know you! I will even die with you!” And all the other followers said the same thing.
Jesus Prays Alone (Mt. 26:36-46; Lk. 22:39-46) 32Jesus and his followers went to a place named Gethsemane. He said to them, “Sit here while I pray.” 33But he told Peter, James, and John to come with him. He began to be very distressed and troubled, 34and he said to them, “My heart is so heavy with grief, I feel as if I am dying. Wait here and stay awake.” 35Jesus went on a little farther away from them, fell to the ground, and prayed. He asked that, if possible, he would not have this time of suffering. 36He said, “Abba*, Father! You can do all things. Don’t make me drink from this cup*. But do what you want, not what I want.” 37Then he went back to his followers and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, “Simon, why are you sleeping? Could you not stay awake with me for one hour? 38Stay awake and pray for strength against temptation. Your spirit wants to do what is right, but your body is weak.” 39Again Jesus went away and prayed the same thing. 40Then he went back to the followers and again found them sleeping. They could not stay awake. They did not know what they should say to him. 41After Jesus prayed a third time, he went back to his followers. He said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? That’s enough! The time has come for the Son of Man* to be handed over to the control of sinful men. 42Stand up! We must go. Here comes the man who is handing me over to them.”
Jesus Is Arrested (Mt. 26:47-56; Lk. 22:47-53; Jn. 18:3-12) 43While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve apostle*s, came there. He had a big crowd of people with him, all carrying swords and clubs. They had been sent from the leading priests, the teachers of the law, and the older Jewish leaders. 44Judas* planned to do something to show them which one was Jesus. He said, “The one I kiss will be Jesus. Arrest him and guard him while you lead him away.” 45So Judas went over to Jesus and said, “Teacher!” Then he kissed him. 46The men grabbed Jesus and arrested him. 47One of the followers standing near Jesus grabbed his sword and pulled it out. He swung it at the servant of the high priest* and cut off his ear. 48Then Jesus said, “Why do you come to get me with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal? 49Every day I was with you teaching in the Temple* area. You did not arrest me there. But all these things have happened to show the full meaning of what the Scriptures* said.” 50Then all of Jesus’ followers left him and ran away. 51One of those following Jesus was a young man wearing only a linen cloth. When the people tried to grab him, 52he left the cloth in their hands and ran away naked.
Jesus Before the Jewish Leaders (Mt. 26:57-68; Lk. 22:54-55, 63-71; Jn. 18:13-14, 19-24) 53Those who arrested Jesus led him to the house of the high priest*. All the leading priests, the older Jewish leaders, and the teachers of the law were gathered there. 54Peter followed Jesus but stayed back at a distance. He followed him to the yard of the high priest’s house. He went into the yard and sat there with the guards, warming himself by their fire. 55The leading priests and the whole high council tried to find something that Jesus had done wrong so they could kill him. But the council could find no proof that would allow them to kill Jesus. 56Many people came and told lies against Jesus, but they all said different things. None of them agreed. 57Then some others stood up and told more lies against Jesus. They said, 58“We heard this man* say, ‘I will destroy this Temple* built by human hands. And three days later, I will build another Temple not made by human hands.’” 59But also what these people said did not agree. 60Then the high priest stood up before everyone and said to Jesus, “These people said things against you. Do you have something to say about their charges? Are they telling the truth?” 61But Jesus said nothing to answer him.
The high priest asked Jesus another question: “Are you the Messiah*, the Son of the blessed God?” 62Jesus answered, “Yes, I am the Son of God. And in the future you will see the Son of Man* sitting at the right side of God All-Powerful. And you will see the Son of Man* coming on the clouds of heaven.” 63When the high priest heard this, he tore his clothes in anger. He said, “We don’t need any more witnesses! 64You all heard these insults to God. What do you think?”
Everyone agreed that Jesus was guilty and must be killed. 65Some of the people there spit at him. They covered his eyes and hit him with their fists. They said, “Be a prophet* and tell us who hit you!” Then the guards led Jesus away and beat him.
Peter Is Afraid to Say He Knows Jesus (Mt. 26:69-75; Lk. 22:56-62; Jn. 18:15-18, 25-27) 66While Peter was still in the yard, a servant girl of the high priest* came there. 67She saw him warming himself by the fire. She looked closely at him and said, “You were with Jesus, that man from Nazareth.” 68But Peter said this was not true. “That makes no sense,” he said. “I don’t know what you are talking about!” Then he left and went to the entrance of the yard, and a rooster crowed.* 69When the servant girl saw him there, she began saying again to the people standing around, “This man is one of them.” 70Again Peter said it was not true.
A short time later, the people standing there said, “We know you are one of them, because you are from Galilee.” 71Then Peter began to curse. He said, “I swear to God, I don’t know this man you are talking about!” 72As soon as Peter said this, the rooster crowed the second time. Then he remembered what Jesus had told him: “Before the rooster crows twice, you will say three times that you don’t know me.” Then Peter began to cry. |

유대 지도자들이 예수를 죽일 계획을 세우다 (마 26:1-5; 눅 22:1-2; 요 11:45-53) 1유월절*과 누룩 없는 빵을 먹는 명절* 이틀 전이었다. 높은 제사장들과 율법 선생들이 어떻게 하면 예수를 몰래 잡아 죽일 수 있을까 궁리하고 있었다. 2그러면서도 백성들이 소동을 일으킬지도 모르니 명절은 피하자고 하였다.
한 여자가 예수께 향유를 부어 드리다 (마 26:6-13; 요 12:1-8) 3예수께서 베다니에 있는 시몬의 집에서 음식을 잡숫고 계셨다. 시몬은 나병환자였던 사람이었다. 그때에 어떤 여자가 값진 나드 향유가 든 옥합을 가지고 예수께 왔다. 여자는 옥합을 깨뜨리고 향유를 예수의 머리에 부었다. 4그 자리에 있던 몇몇 사람이 이것을 보고 화를 내며 자기들끼리 수군거렸다. “왜 이렇게 향유를 낭비하는 거야? 5저런 값비싼 향유라면 일 년 치 품삯*보다 더 많은 돈을 받고 팔 수 있었을 텐데! 그 돈을 가난한 사람들한테 주었더라면 좋았을 것 아닌가!” 그들은 여자를 나무랐다. 6예수께서 말씀하셨다. “그 여자를 가만 내버려 두어라. 이 여자는 나를 위해 아름다운 일을 하였다. 7가난한 사람들은 언제나 너희와 함께 있을 것이다. 너희가 마음만 먹으면 그들을 어느 때든지 도울 수 있다. 그러나 나는 너희와 언제나 같이 있지 않을 것이다. 8내 장례를 위하여 내 몸에 미리 향유를 부었으니, 이 여자는 자기가 할 수 있는 일을 한 것이다. 9내가 분명히 말한다. 기쁜 소식이 온 세상에 전해질 것이다. 그리고 기쁜 소식이 전해지는 곳 어디에서나 이 여자를 기려 이 여자가 한 일을 말하게 될 것이다.”
유다가 예수의 적들을 돕기로 하다 (마 26:14-16; 눅 22:3-6) 10열두 사도* 가운데 한 사람이 높은 제사장들을 만나러 갔다. 그는 가리옷 사람 유다로, 예수를 그들에게 넘겨줄 생각을 하고 있었다. 11높은 제사장들은 그의 제안을 듣고 좋아하였다. 그들은 유다에게 예수를 넘겨주면 돈을 주겠다고 약속하였다. 유다는 예수를 넘겨줄 기회를 엿보기 시작하였다.
유월절 식사 (마 26:17-25; 눅 22:7-14, 21-23; 요 13:21-30) 12누룩 없는 빵을 먹는 명절의 첫날이었다. 이 날은 유대 사람들이 유월절에 쓸 양을 잡는 날이었다. 제자들이 예수께 와서 여쭈었다. “저희가 어디로 가서, 선생님께서 드실 유월절 잔치 음식을 마련하면 좋겠습니까?” 13예수께서 제자 가운데 두 사람을 보내며 말씀하셨다. “예루살렘 성 안으로 들어가거라. 그러면 물동이를 지고 가는 남자를 만나게 될 것이다. 그 남자를 따라가거라. 14그가 들어가는 집으로 가서 그 집 주인을 만나서 이렇게 말하여라. ‘선생님께서 이렇게 여쭈어 보라고 하셨습니다. 내가 쓸 손님방이 어디 있느냐? 내가 거기서 제자들과 함께 유월절 잔치 음식을 먹으려고 한다.’ 15그 집 주인은 너희에게 이층에 있는 큰 방을 보여 줄 것이다. 그 방은 모든 것이 갖추어져 있어 언제든지 쓸 준비가 되어 있을 것이다. 그곳에 우리가 먹을 음식을 준비해 놓아라.” 16두 제자가 성 안으로 들어가 보니 모든 일이 예수께서 말씀하신 대로 되어 있었다. 그들은 거기에 유월절 잔치 음식을 차려 놓았다. 17저녁에 예수께서 열두 사도*와 함께 그 집으로 가셨다. 18모두 상에 비스듬히 기대 앉아 음식을 먹고 있을 때에 예수께서 말씀하셨다. “내가 너희에게 분명히 말한다. 너희 열두 사람 가운데 한 사람이 나를 배반할 것이다. 그 사람은 지금 나와 함께 음식을 먹고 있다.” 19제자들은 이 말을 듣고 걱정이 되어, 저마다 예수께 여쭈었다. “설마 저는 아니겠지요?” 20예수께서 대답하셨다. “너희 열둘 가운데 한 사람이다. 그는 나와 같은 그릇에 빵을 적셔 먹는 사람이다. 21사람의 아들은 성경에 쓰여 있는 대로 죽을 것이다. 그러나 사람의 아들을 죽이라고 넘겨주는 사람에게는 큰 화가 미칠 것이다. 그 사람은 차라리 태어나지 않은 편이 좋았을 것이다.”
마지막 저녁 식사 (마 26:26-30; 눅 22:15-20; 고전 11:23-25) 22그들이 음식을 먹고 있을 때에, 예수께서 빵을 집어 들고 하나님께 감사 기도를 드렸다. 그리고 제자들에게 빵을 나누어 주시면서 말씀하셨다. “이 빵을 받아 먹어라. 이것은 내 몸이다.” 23그런 다음 예수께서 포도주 잔을 들고 감사 기도를 드린 뒤에, 제자들에게 주셨다. 모든 제자들이 그 잔에서 포도주를 마셨다. 24예수께서 말씀하셨다. “이 포도주는 내 피다. 내 피(죽음)는 하나님께서 자기 백성과 맺으려 하시는 새로운 계약의 시작이다. 이 피는 많은 사람을 위하여 뿌려질 것이다. 25내가 너희에게 분명히 말한다. 내가 하나님 나라에서 새 포도주를 마시게 될 그날까지 다시는 포도주를 마시지 않겠다.” 26그들은 찬송을 부르고 난 다음, 밖으로 나가 올리브 산*으로 갔다.
제자들이 모두 예수를 버릴 것이다 (마 26:31-35; 눅 22:31-34; 요 13:36-38) 27예수께서 제자들에게 말씀하셨다. “너희는 모두 믿음을 잃게 될 것이다. 성경*에 그렇게 쓰여 있다.
‘내가 목자를 치리니. 양 떼가 모두 흩어지리라.’슥 13:7 28그러나 나는 죽은 뒤에 다시 살아나서 갈릴리로 가겠다. 너희보다 먼저 그곳에 가 있겠다.” 29베드로가 말하였다. “모든 사람이 다 주님을 버려도, 저는 주님을 버리지 않겠습니다.” 30예수께서 대답하셨다. “내가 분명히 말한다. 오늘 저녁 너는 닭이 두 번 울기 전에 세 번이나 나를 모른다고 말할 것이다.” 31그러나 베드로는 강하게 부인하였다. “저는 결코 선생님을 모른다고 말하지 않겠습니다. 차라리 선생님과 함께 죽겠습니다.” 다른 제자들도 모두 똑같이 말하였다.
예수께서 홀로 기도하시다 (마 26:36-46; 눅 22:39-46) 32예수와 제자들은 겟세마네*라고 하는 곳에 이르렀다. 예수께서 제자들에게 말씀하셨다. “내가 기도하는 동안 여기 앉아 있어라.” 33그리고 베드로와 야고보와 요한과 함께 조금 더 올라가셨다. 예수께서는 괴로움과 걱정에 싸여 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “내 영이* 괴로워 죽을 지경이구나. 34너희는 여기 남아서 자지 말고 깨어 있어라.” 35예수께서 세 제자를 남겨놓고 조금 떨어진 곳으로 가셔서, 땅에 엎드려 기도하셨다. 할 수만 있다면 이 고통의 시간이 자신을 비켜가게 해 달라고 기도하셨다. 36”아바*, 아버지! 아버지는 무슨 일이든 다 하실 수 있습니다. 나에게서 이 고통의 잔을 치워 주십시오. 그러나 내 뜻이 아니라 아버지의 뜻이 이루어지기를 바랍니다.” 37그러고 나서 예수께서 제자들에게로 돌아와 그들이 자고 있는 것을 보셨다. 베드로에게 예수께서 말씀하셨다. “시몬아! 네가 자고 있느냐? 너는 한 시간도 깨어 있을 수가 없더냐? 38유혹에 빠지지 않도록 깨어 기도하여라. 마음은 원하는데 몸이 약하구나.” 39예수께서 한 번 더 따로 가셔서 같은 기도를 하셨다. 40그리고 돌아와 보시니 제자들은 자고 있었다. 너무 졸려서 눈을 뜨고 있을 수가 없었기 때문이었다. 그들은 예수를 보고도 무슨 말을 해야 할지 몰랐다. 41예수께서 세 번째 기도를 마친 뒤에 제자들에게로 오셨다. 그리고 말씀하셨다. “너희는 아직도 자며 쉬고 있느냐? 이제 그만큼 잤으면 됐다. 시간이 다 되었다. 보아라, 사람의 아들*이 죄인들의 손에 넘겨진다. 42일어나라. 가자! 보아라! 저기 나를 넘겨줄 자가 오고 있구나.”
예수께서 잡히시다 (마 26:47-56; 눅 22:47-53; 요 18:3-12) 43예수께서 아직 말씀하고 계시는데 유다가 가까이 왔다. 그는 열두 사도 가운데 한 사람이었다. 유다는 많은 사람과 함께 왔다. 이들은 높은 제사장들과 율법 선생들과 장로*들이 보낸 사람들이었다. 그들은 칼과 몽둥이를 들고 있었다. 44유다는 그들에게 신호를 보내기로 미리 약속해 놓고 있었다. “내가 입을 맞추는 사람이 바로 그 사람이요. 그를 붙잡아 단단히 끌고 가시오.” 45그래서 유다는 예수께 다가와 “선생님!” 하고 불렀다. 그리고 예수께 입을 맞추었다. 46그러자 사람들이 달려들어 예수를 붙잡았다. 47예수 가까이에 서 있던 제자 하나가 칼을 빼어 들었다. 이 제자는 대제사장*의 종을 쳐서 그의 귀를 잘랐다. 48예수께서 말씀하셨다. “너희가 나를 잡으려고 칼과 몽둥이를 들고 오다니, 내가 강도라도 된단 말이냐? 49나는 날마다 성전*에서 가르치며 너희와 함께 있었지만, 너희는 그곳에서 나를 잡지 않았다. 그러나 성경*에서 말한 모든 일이 이루어지게 하려고 이런 일이 일어났다.” 50그때에 제자들은 모두 예수를 버리고 도망쳤다. 51한 젊은이가 예수를 따라가고 있었다. 그는 몸에 홑이불만을 걸치고 있었다. 사람들은 이 젊은이도 같이 잡으려고 하였다. 52그러자 그는 걸치고 있던 홑이불을 버리고 맨몸으로 도망쳤다.
유대 지도자들 앞에 서신 예수 (마 26:57-68; 눅 22:54-55, 63-71; 요 18:13-14, 19-24) 53예수를 체포한 사람들은 그분을 대제사장*에게로 끌고 갔다. 다른 높은 제사장들과 장로*들과 율법 선생들이 그곳에 모여 있었다. 54베드로는 멀찍이 떨어져서 예수를 따라갔다. 그는 대제사장의 집 마당 안으로 들어가 경비원들과 함께 앉아, 그곳에 있는 화톳불 곁에서 불을 쬐었다. 55높은 제사장들과 모든 유대 의회* 의원들은 예수를 사형에 처하려고 그에게 불리한 증거를 찾고 있었다. 그러나 그럴 만한 증거를 하나도 찾지 못하였다. 56많은 사람이 예수께 불리한 증거를 댔지만, 그들의 말이 서로 달랐다.* 57그러자 어떤 사람들이 일어나서 예수에 대해 이런 거짓 증거를 댔다. 58”우리는 예수가 ‘나는 사람이 만든 이 성전을 헐고, 사흘 뒤에 사람의 손으로 만들지 않은 새 성전을 세우겠다.’고 말하는 것을 들었습니다.” 59그러나 그들의 증거조차도 서로 엇갈렸다. 60그러자 대제사장*이 모든 사람 앞에 서서 예수께 말하였다. “이 사람들이 이렇게 당신에게 불리한 증언을 하는데, 당신은 대답할 말이 없소?” 61그러나 예수께서는 계속 입을 다물고 물음에 대답하지 않으셨다.
대제사장은 예수께 다시 물었다. “당신이 찬송 받으실 분(하나님)의 아들, 그리스도* 요?” 62예수께서 대답하셨다. “그렇소. 내가 사람의 아들이오. 당신들은 앞으로 사람의 아들이 전능하신 하나님의 오른쪽에 앉아 있는 것을 보게 될 것이오. 그리고 사람의 아들이 하늘의 구름을 타고 오는 것도 보게 될 것이오.” 63대제사장*은 이 말을 듣고 자신의 옷을 찢으며 말하였다. “우리에게 더 이상의 증거가 필요 없습니다! 64여러분 모두 그가 하나님을 크게 모독하는 죄를 짓는 말을 직접 들었습니다. 어떻게들 생각하십니까?”
모든 사람이 예수의 죄가 커서 죽어 마땅하다고 말하였다. 65어떤 사람들은 예수께 침을 뱉고, 그분의 눈을 가리고 때리기 시작하였다. 그러면서 말하였다. “누가 너를 때렸는지 알아맞혀 보아라.” 예수를 넘겨받은 경비원들도 그분을 때렸다.
베드로가 무서워서 예수를 모른다고 말하다 (마 26:69-75; 눅 22:56-62; 요 18:15-18, 25-27) 66베드로가 뜰 아래쪽에 있을 때에 대제사장의 여종 하나가 지나갔다. 67그 여종은 베드로가 불을 쬐고 있는 것을 보고는 다가와 그를 자세히 살펴보았다.
그리고 말하였다. “당신도 저 나사렛 사람 예수와 함께 다녔군요.” 68그러나 베드로는 그런 적이 없다고 말하였다. “도대체 무슨 말을 하는 거요? 나는 당신이 무슨 이야기를 하고 있는지 알 수가 없소.” 그는 이렇게 말하고 대문께로 갔다. 69그 여종은 베드로가 아직도 대문께에 서 있는 것을 보고는 다시 둘레에 있는 사람들에게 말하였다. “이 사람은 예수를 따라다니던 사람이에요!” 70베드로는 다시 그 말을 부인하였다.
조금 뒤에 베드로의 곁에 서 있던 사람들이 말하였다. “당신도 갈릴리 사람이니 틀림없이 예수를 따라다니던 패거리들 가운데 하나일 거요.” 71그러자 베드로는 거짓말이면 천벌이라도 받겠다고 하며 그들에게 맹세하였다. “나는 당신들이 말하는 이 사람을 알지도 못합니다!” 72베드로가 이 말을 한 뒤에 닭이 두 번째 울었다. 베드로는, 예수께서 “닭이 두 번 울기 전에 너는 나를 세 번 모른다고 할 것이다.”라고 하시던 말씀이 생각났다. 그는 정신없이 울었다. |
