The Jewish Leaders Plan to Kill Jesus(Mt. 26:1-5, 14-16; Mk. 14:1-2, 10-11; Jn. 11:45-53) 22 1It was almost time for the Jewish Festival of Unleavened Breada, called the Passoverb. 2The leading priests and teachers of the law wanted to kill Jesus. But they were trying to find a quiet way to do it, because they were afraid of what the people would do.
Judas Agrees to Help Jesus¡¯ Enemies(Mt. 26:14-16; Mk. 14:10-11) 3One of Jesus' twelve apostlesc was named Judas Iscariot. Satand entered him, 4and he went and talked with the leading priests and some of the soldiers who guarded the Templee. He talked to them about a way to hand Jesus over to them. 5The priests were very happy about this. They promised to give Judas money for doing this. 6He agreed. Then he waited for the best time to hand him over to them. He wanted to do it when no one was around to see it.
The Passover Meal(Mt. 26:17-25; Mk. 14:12-21; Jn. 13:21-30) 7The Day of Unleavened Breadf came. This was the day when the Jews always killed the lambs for the Passoverb. 8Jesus said to Peter and John, "Go and prepare the Passover meal for us to eat." 9They said to him, "Where do you want us to prepare the meal?"
He said to them, 10"When you go into the city, you will see a man carrying a jar of water. Follow him. He will go into a house. 11Tell the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks that you please show us the room where he and his followers can eat the Passover meal.' 12Then the owner will show you a large room upstairs that is ready for us. Prepare the meal there." 13So Peter and John left. Everything happened the way Jesus said. So they prepared the Passover meal.
The Lord¡¯s Supper(Mt. 26:26-30; Mk. 14:22-26; 1 Cor. 11:23-25) 14The time came for them to eat the Passoverb meal. Jesus and the apostlesc were together at the table. 15Jesus said to them, "I wanted very much to eat this Passover meal with you before I die. 16I will never eat another Passover meal until it is given its full meaning in God's kingdomg." 17Then Jesus took a cup of wine. He gave thanks to God for it and said, "Take this cup and give it to everyone here. 18I will never drink wine again until God's kingdom comes." 19Then he took some bread and thanked God for it. He broke off some pieces, gave them to the apostles and said, "This bread is my body that I am giving for you. Eat this to remember me." 20In the same way, after supper, Jesus took the cup of wine and said, "This wine represents the new agreementh from God to his people. It will begin when my blood is poured out for you."i
Who Will Turn Against Jesus? 21Jesus said, "But here on this table is the hand of the one who will hand me over to my enemies. 22The Son of Manj will do what God has planned. But it will be very bad for the one who hands over the Son of Man to be killed." 23Then the apostlesc asked each other, "Which one of us would do that?"
Be Like a Servant 24Later, the apostlesc began to argue about which one of them was the most important. 25But Jesus said to them, "The kings of the world rule over their people, and those who have authority over others want to be called 'the great providers for the people.' 26But you must not be like that. The one with the most authority among you should act as if he is the least important. The one who leads should be like one who serves. 27Who is more important: the one serving or the one sitting at the table being served? Everyone thinks it's the one being served, right? But I have been with you as the one who serves. 28"You men have stayed with me through many struggles. 29So I give you authority to rule with me in the kingdom the Father has given me. 30You will eat and drink at my table in that kingdom. You will sit on thrones and judge the twelve tribes of Israelk.
Peter Will Be Tested and Fail(Mt. 26:31-35; Mk. 14:27-31; Jn. 13:36-38) 31"Satand has asked to test you men like a farmer tests his wheat. O Simon, Simonl, 32I have prayed that you will not lose your faith! Help your brothers be stronger when you come back to me." 33But Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, I am ready to go to jail with you. I will even die with you!" 34But Jesus said, "Peter, before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will say you don't know me. You will say this three times."
Be Ready for Trouble 35Then Jesus said to the apostlesc, "Remember when I sent you out without money, a bag, or sandals? Did you need anything?" The apostlesc said, "No." 36Jesus said to them, "But now if you have money or a bag, carry that with you. If you don't have a sword, sell your coat and buy one. 37The Scripturesm say,
| 'He was considered a criminal.'n | | This Scripture must happen. It was written about me, and it is happening now." 38The followers said, "Look, Lord, here are two swords." Jesus said to them, "That's enough."o
Jesus Prays Alone(Mt. 26:36-46; Mk. 14:32-42) 39-40Jesus left the city and went to the Mount of Olivesp. His followers went with him. (He went there often.) He said to his followers, "Pray for strength against temptation." 41Then Jesus went about 50 steps away from them. He knelt down and prayed, 42"Father, if you are willing, please don't make me drink from this cupq. But do what you want, not what I want." 43Then an angel from heaven came to help him. 44Jesus was full of pain; he struggled hard in prayer. Sweat dripped from his face like drops of blood falling to the ground.r 45When he finished praying, he went to his followers. He found them asleep, worn out from their grieving. 46Jesus said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray for strength against temptation."
Jesus Is Arrested(Mt. 26:47-56; Mk. 14:43-50; Jn. 18:3-11) 47While Jesus was speaking, a crowd came up. It was led by Judas, one of the twelve apostlesc. He came over to Jesus to kiss him. 48But Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you using the kiss of friendship to hand over the Son of Manj to his enemies?" 49The followers of Jesus were standing there too. They saw what was happening and said to Jesus, "Lord, should we use our swords?" 50And one of them did use his sword. He cut off the right ear of the servant of the high priests. 51Jesus said, "Stop!" Then he touched the servant's ear and healed him. 52Jesus spoke to the group that came to arrest him. They were the leading priests, the older Jewish leaders, and the Jewish soldiers. He said to them, "Why did you come out here with swords and clubs? Do you think I am a criminal? 53I was with you every day in the Templee area. Why didn't you try to arrest me there? But this is your time - the time when darkness rules."
Peter Is Afraid to Say He Knows Jesus(Mt. 26:57-58, 69-75; Mk. 14:53-54, 66-72; Jn. 18:12-18, 25-27) 54They arrested Jesus and took him away to the house of the high priests. Peter followed Jesus but stayed back at a distance. 55The soldiers started a fire in the middle of the yard and sat together. Peter sat with them. 56A servant girl saw him sitting there. She could see because of the light from the fire. She looked closely at Peter's face. Then she said, "This man was also with Jesus." 57But Peter said this was not true. He said, "Lady, I don't know him." 58A short time later, someone else saw Peter and said, "You are also one of them."
But Peter said, "Man, I am not!" 59About an hour later, another man said, "It's true. I'm sure this man was with him, because he is from Galilee." 60But Peter said, "Man, I don't know what you are talking about!"
Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61Then the Lord turned and looked into Peter's eyes. And Peter remembered what the Lord had said, "Before the rooster crows in the morning, you will say three times that you don't know me." 62Then Peter went outside and cried bitterly.
The Guards Treat Jesus Badly(Mt. 26:67-68; Mk. 14:65) 63The men guarding Jesus made fun of him and beat him. 64They covered his eyes so that he could not see them. Then they hit him and said, "Be a prophett and tell us who hit you!" 65And they shouted all kinds of insults at him.
Jesus Before the Jewish Leaders(Mt. 26:59-66; Mk. 14:55-64; Jn. 18:19-24) 66The next morning, the older leaders of the people, the leading priests, and the teachers of the law came together. They led Jesus away to their high council. 67They said, "If you are the Messiahu, then tell us that you are."
Jesus said to them, "If I tell you I am the Messiah, you will not believe me. 68And if I ask you, you will not answer. 69But beginning now, the Son of Manj will sit at the right side of God All-Powerful." 70They all said, "Then are you the Son of God?" Jesus said to them, "You are right in saying that I am." 71They said, "Why do we need witnesses now? We all heard what he said!" aFestival of Unleavened Bread An important and holy week for the people of Israel and their descendants. In the time of the Old Testament it began the day after Passover, but by New Testament times the two festivals had become one. To prepare for it, the people threw out all their yeast and ate only bread without yeast for seven days.¡± bPassover A very important holy day for the people of Israel and their descendants. They ate a special meal on this day every year to remember that God made them free from slavery in Egypt in the time of Moses. The name may come from the word in Ex. 12:13, 23, 27 that means ¡°to pass over¡± or ¡°to protect.¡± capostle A follower of Jesus chosen to represent him in a special way. During his earthly ministry, Jesus named twelve men as apostles. They had the specific responsibility and authority to represent him and proclaim his message throughout the world. Later, he appeared to Paul and gave him a similar commission, especially to non-Jewish people. Barnabas, Paul¡¯s missionary companion, and James, the brother of Jesus, are also called apostles, as well as several others in the New Testament. Some of these occurrences of the word, however, have the more general sense of ¡°messenger¡± or ¡°representative.¡± dSatan A name for the devil meaning ¡°the enemy,¡± or ¡°the accuser.¡± eTemple The permanent building in Jerusalem that replaced the portable ¡°Holy Tent¡± that was used by the Israelites from the time of their wandering in the desert to the reign of King Solomon, when the first Temple was built. Like the Holy Tent, the Temple was the center of Israelite worship, although provision was made for it to be ¡°a house of prayer for all nations¡± (Isa. 56:7). f22:7 Day of Unleavened Bread Same as Passover. gGod¡¯s kingdom The ¡°reign¡± or ¡°rule¡± of God over all people who submit to him by accepting Jesus as the Messiah (the appointed king), who represents God¡¯s kingdom on earth. Jesus was the perfect example of submission to the will of God. When people give control of their lives to Jesus, they become part of God¡¯s kingdom and begin to enjoy the blessings he has promised his people from the beginning. (Note that in Matthew this term also translates the Greek word ¡°kingdom¡± by itself or the phrase, ¡°the kingdom of the heavens,¡± which was used by Jews as a way to avoid saying the divine name.) hagreement A contract or agreement from God to his people. The agreement that God gave his people at Mount Sinai, based on the Law of Moses, became the most important for the Israelites or Jews. It replaced or renewed all other agreements, such as that given earlier to Abraham. In the New Testament it is referred to as the ¡°old¡± or ¡°first¡± agreement. After Jesus Christ came and offered his life as payment for the sins of all people, God was able to offer a ¡°new¡± and ¡°better¡± agreement based on Christ¡¯s sacrifice. i22:20 A few Greek copies do not have Jesus¡¯ words in the last part of verse 19 and all of verse 20. jSon of Man The name that Jesus most often used for himself. The phrase in Hebrew or Aramaic means ¡°human being¡± or ¡°mankind,¡± but in Dan. 7:13-14 it is used of a future savior and king, and this was later understood to be the Messiah, the one God would send to save his people. kIsrael Another name for Jacob (see Gen. 32:24-28) and for the nation God chose to accomplish his plan of blessing the world through the Messiah (see ¡°Messiah¡±). The people of Israel were the descendants of Jacob¡¯s twelve sons. In the New Testament this name is sometimes used in a broader sense to mean all of God¡¯s people. l22:31 Simon Simon¡¯s other name was Peter. mScripture Part of the Scriptures or ¡°Holy Writings¡± - the Old Testament. nIsaiah 53:12 o22:38 ¡°That¡¯s enough¡± Or ¡°Enough of that!¡± meaning ¡°Don¡¯t talk anymore about such things.¡± pMount of Olives A hill east of the city of Jerusalem from which a person could see the Temple area. q22:42 cup A symbol of suffering. Jesus used the idea of drinking from a cup to mean accepting the suffering he would face in the terrible events that were soon to come. r22:44 Some Greek copies do not have verses 43 and 44. shigh priest The most important priest and leader of the Israelites or the Jews, God¡¯s people under the ¡°old agreement.¡± Under the ¡°new agreement¡± the high priest for God¡¯s people is Jesus Christ. Read Heb. 7:11-8:13. t22:64 prophet A prophet often knows things that are hidden to other people. uMessiah A Hebrew word that has the same meaning as the Greek word Christ (see ¡°Christ¡±). It was a title for the kings of God¡¯s people in the Old Testament and for the special king God promised to send as a ¡°savior¡± to defeat evil and establish the reign of God. Many prophets made it clear that this new kingdom would be eternal; that is, not only would the promised Messiah bring about a time of justice and right living among God¡¯s people here on earth, but also his kingdom would extend beyond this world to life forever with God. However, most Jews of the first century expected the Messiah to be a political ruler here on earth who would defeat the other nations and return the nation of Israel to a position of great glory and power. But God intended his Messiah to establish a new ¡°Israel,¡± an eternal kingdom that would bless all the nations.
