Jesus Is Our Helper1My dear children, I write this letter to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone sins, we have Jesus Christ to help us. He always did what was right, so he is able to defend us before God the Father. 2Jesus is the way our sins are taken away. And he is the way all people can have their sins taken away too. 3If we obey what God has told us to do, then we are sure that we know him. 4If we say we know God but do not obey his commands, we are lying. The truth is not in us. 5But when we obey God’s teaching, his love is truly working in us. This is how we know that we are living in him. 6If we say we live in God, we must live the way Jesus lived.
Jesus Told Us to Love Others 7My dear friends, I am not writing a new command to you. It is the same command you have had since the beginning. This command is the teaching you have already heard. 8But what I write is also a new command. It is a true one; you can see its truth in Jesus and in yourselves. The darkness* is passing away, and the true light is already shining. 9Someone might say, “I am in the light*,” but if they hate any of their brothers or sisters in God’s family, they are still in the darkness. 10Those who love their brothers and sisters live in the light, and there is nothing in them that will make them do wrong. 11But whoever hates their brother or sister is in darkness. They live in darkness. They don’t know where they are going, because the darkness has made them blind. 12I write to you, dear children, because your sins are forgiven through Christ. 13I write to you, fathers, because you know the one who existed from the beginning.
I write to you, young people, because you have defeated the Evil One*. 14I write to you, children, because you know the Father.
I write to you, fathers, because you know the one who existed from the beginning.
I write to you, young people, because you are strong.
The word of God lives in you, and you have defeated the Evil One. 15Don’t love this evil world or the things in it. If you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. 16This is all there is in the world: wanting to please our sinful selves, wanting the sinful things we see, and being too proud of what we have. But none of these comes from the Father. They come from the world. 17The world is passing away, and all the things that people want in the world are passing away. But whoever does what God wants will live forever.
Don’t Follow the Enemies of Christ 18My dear children, the end is near! You have heard that the enemy of Christ* is coming. And now many enemies of Christ* are already here. So we know that the end is near. 19These enemies were in our group, but they left us. They did not really belong with us. If they were really part of our group, they would have stayed with us. But they left. This shows that none of them really belonged with us. 20You have the gift* that the Holy One* gave you. So you all know the truth. 21Do you think I am writing this letter because you don’t know the truth? No, I am writing because you do know the truth. And you know that no lie comes from the truth. 22So who is the liar? It is the one who says Jesus is not the Messiah*. Whoever says that is the enemy of Christ - the one who does not believe in the Father or in his Son. 23Whoever does not believe in the Son does not have the Father, but whoever accepts the Son has the Father too. 24Be sure that you continue to follow the teaching you heard from the beginning. If you do that, you will always be in the Son and in the Father. 25And this is what the Son promised us - eternal life. 26I am writing this letter about those who are trying to lead you into the wrong way. 27Christ gave you a special gift. You still have this gift in you. So you don’t need anyone to teach you. The gift he gave you teaches you about everything. It is a true gift, not a false one. So continue to live in Christ, as his gift taught you. 28Yes, my dear children, live in him. If we do this, we can be without fear on the day when Christ comes again. We will not need to hide and be ashamed when he comes. 29You know that Christ always did what was right. So you know that all those who do what is right are God’s children. |

그리스도는 우리를 도우시는 분 1사랑하는 자녀 여러분, 여러분이 죄짓지 않게 하려고 이 글을 씁니다. 그러나 혹 어떤 사람이 죄를 짓더라도, 우리에게는 아버지 앞에서 우리의 죄를 용서해 달라고 간청해 주시는 분이 계십니다. 곧 의로우신 예수 그리스도이십니다. 2그분은 우리의 죄를 없애 주시려고 몸소 희생 제물*이 되셨습니다. 그분은 우리의 죄뿐만 아니라 세상 모든 사람의 죄를 위하여 그렇게 되셨습니다. 3우리가 하나님의 계명*을 지키면, 이것으로 우리가 하나님을 알게 되었음을 압니다. 4만일 어떤 사람이 “나는 하나님을 안다.”고 말하면서 하나님의 계명을 지키지 않으면, 그 사람은 거짓말쟁이입니다. 그리고 그런 사람 속에는 진리가 없습니다. 5그러나 누구든지 하나님의 계명*에 순종하면, 하나님의 사랑*이 그 사람 안에서 참으로 완성됩니다. 이것으로 우리가 하나님 안에 있음을 알 수 있습니다. 6하나님 안에서 산다고 주장하는 사람은, 예수 그리스도께서 사신 것처럼 살아야 합니다.
하나님은 다른 사람을 사랑하라고 가르치신다 7사랑하는 형제 여러분, 내가 새 계명을 여러분에게 써 보내는 것이 아닙니다. 나는 여러분이 처음부터 가지고 있는 옛 계명을 써 보냅니다. 이 옛 계명은 여러분이 이미 들은 말씀입니다. 8그러나 나는 여러분에게 이 계명을 새 계명으로 써 보냅니다. 이 계명이 참되다는 것은 그리스도의 삶과 여러분의 삶을 보아 알 수 있습니다. 그것은, 어둠이 물러나기 시작하였고, 참 빛이 벌써 비치고 있기 때문입니다. 9누구든지 빛* 속에 산다고 말하면서 형제를 미워하는 사람은, 여전히 어둠 속에 사는 사람입니다. 10형제를 사랑하는 사람은 빛 속에 살고 있으며, 그 사람 속에는* 그를 넘어지게 하는 것이 아무것도 없습니다. 11그러나 형제를 미워하는 사람은 어둠 속에 있는 사람입니다. 어둠이 그의 눈을 가리고 있기 때문에, 그는 자기가 어디로 가고 있는지 모릅니다. 12사랑하는 자녀 여러분,
내가 여러분에게 이 글을 쓰는 까닭은,
그리스도를 통해 여러분의 죄가 용서되었기 때문입니다. 13세상의 아버지들이여,
내가 여러분에게 이 글을 쓰는 까닭은,
여러분이 세상 처음부터 계셨던 하나님을 알고 있기 때문입니다.
세상의 젊은이들이여,
내가 여러분에게 이 글을 쓰는 까닭은,
여러분이 그 악한 자*를 물리쳤기 때문입니다. 14세상의 어린이 여러분,
내가 여러분에게 이 글을 쓰는 까닭은,
여러분이 이미 아버지(하나님)를 알고 있기 때문입니다.
아버지가 된 여러분,
내가 이 글을 여러분에게 쓰는 까닭은,
여러분이 처음부터 계셨던 분을 알고 있기 때문입니다.
젊은이들이여,
내가 여러분에게 이 글을 쓰는 까닭은,
여러분이 굳건하고,
하나님의 말씀이 여러분 안에 있어,
그 악한 자를 물리쳤기 때문입니다. 15이 세상이나, 세상에 속한 것들을 사랑하지 마십시오. 세상을 사랑하는 사람들 속에는 아버지를 사랑하는 마음이 없습니다. 16세상에 있는 모든 것, 곧
우리의 이기적인 욕망*을 채워 줄 것들을 원하는 것, 눈에 보이는 모든 것을 원하는 것, 그리고 우리가 가진 것들을 자랑거리로 삼는 것,
이 모든 것은 아버지께로부터 오는 것이 아니라 세상에서 오는 것입니다. 17이 세상은 곧 사라집니다. 세상이 낳은 욕망도 세상과 더불어 사라집니다. 그러나 하나님의 뜻을 행하는 사람은 영원히 삽니다.
그리스도의 적을 따르지 마라 18사랑하는 내 자녀들이여, 지금이 마지막 시간입니다. 여러분은 그리스도의 적이 오리라는 말을 들었습니다. 그 말대로 벌써 많은 그리스도의 적이 와 있습니다. 이것으로 우리는 지금이 마지막 시간이라는 것을 압니다. 19그리스도의 적들은 우리에게서 나갔습니다. 그러나 그들은 정말로 우리에게 속했던 자들이 아닙니다. 만일 그들이 정말로 우리에게 속했더라면, 그들은 우리와 함께 남아 있었을 것입니다. 그들이 우리를 떠났다는 사실이, 그들 가운데 어느 한 사람도 우리에게 속한 사람이 아니었다는 것을 나타냅니다. 20그러나 여러분은 거룩하신 분에게서 기름 부으심*을 받았습니다. 그래서 여러분은 모두 진리를 알고 있습니다. 21내가 여러분에게 이 편지를 쓰는 것은 여러분이 진리를 모르기 때문이 아닙니다. 오히려 여러분이 진리를 잘 알고 있기 때문이며, 또 진리에서는 결코 거짓말이 나오지 않는다는 것도 알고 있기 때문입니다. 22누가 거짓말쟁이입니까? 예수께서 그리스도*가 아니라고 말하는 사람입니다. 그런 사람은 그리스도*의 적이요, 아버지(하나님)도 아들(예수)도 부인하는 자입니다. 23누구든지 아들을 인정하지 않는 사람은 아버지를 모시지 않는 사람입니다. 그러나 아들을 인정하는 사람은 아버지 또한 모시는 사람입니다. 24여러분은 처음부터 배운 것을 여러분 속에 간직하십시오. 여러분이 처음부터 배운 그것이 여러분 안에서 살고 있으면, 여러분도 아들과 아버지 안에서 살 것입니다. 25이것이 바로 그리스도께서 우리에게 주시기로 약속하신 것 곧 영원한 삶입니다. 26내가 여러분을 속이려 하는 자들에 관해서 지금까지 썼습니다. 27그러나 여러분으로 말하자면, 그리스도께서 부어 주신 성령이 여러분 안에 살아 계시니, 여러분에게는 가르쳐 줄 사람이 필요하지 않습니다. 그리스도의 성령*께서 모든 것에 관하여 여러분에게 가르쳐 주십니다. 그리고 그분은 진실하셔서 거짓말하지 않으십니다. 여러분은 그 성령님께서 여러분에게 가르쳐 주신 대로 언제나 그리스도 안에서 살아가십시오. 28사랑하는 어린 자녀들이여, 그리스도 안에서 살아가십시오. 그러면 그리스도께서 나타나시는 날에 우리가 자신을 갖게 되고, 다시 오시는 그분 앞에서 부끄러움을 당하지 않을 것입니다. 29하나님께서 의로우신 분이라는 것을 여러분이 알고 있다면, 옳은 일을 하는 사람은 모두 하나님께로부터 났다는 것도 알 것입니다. |
