1Greetings from Paul, a prisoner for Jesus Christ, and from Timothy, our brother.
To Philemon, our dear friend and worker with us. 2Also to our sister Apphia, to Archippus, who serves with us in the Lord’s army, and to the church* that meets in your home. 3Grace* and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Philemon’s Love and Faith 4I remember you in my prayers. And I always thank my God for you. 5I thank God because I hear about the love you have for all of God’s holy people* and the faith you have in the Lord Jesus. 6I pray that the faith you share will make you understand every blessing we have in Christ. 7My brother, you have shown love to God’s people, and your help has greatly encouraged them. What a great joy and encouragement that has been to me.
Accept Onesimus as a Brother 8There is something that you should do. And because of the authority I have in Christ, I feel free to command you to do it. 9But I am not commanding you; I am asking you to do it out of love. I, Paul, am an old man now, and I am a prisoner for Christ Jesus. 10I am asking you for my son Onesimus. He became my son while I was in prison. 11In the past he was useless to you. But now he has become useful* for both you and me. 12I am sending him back to you, but it’s as hard as losing part of myself. 13I would like to keep him here to help me while I am still in prison for telling the Good News*. By helping me here, he would be representing you. 14But I did not want to do anything without asking you first. Then whatever you do for me will be what you want to do, not what I forced you to do. 15Onesimus was separated from you for a short time. Maybe that happened so that you could have him back forever, 16not to be just a slave, but better than a slave, to be a dear brother. That’s what he is to me. And I know he will mean even more to you, both as your slave and as one who shares your faith in the Lord. 17If you accept me as your friend, then accept Onesimus back. Welcome him like you would welcome me. 18If he has done any wrong to you or owes you anything, charge that to me. 19I, Paul, am writing this in my own handwriting: I will pay back anything Onesimus owes. And I will say nothing about what you owe me for your own life. 20So, my brother, as a follower of the Lord please do this favor* for me. It would be such a great encouragement to me as your brother in Christ. 21I write this letter knowing that you will do what I ask, and even more than I ask. 22Also, please prepare a room for me. I hope that God will answer your prayers and that I will be able to come and see you.

1그리스도 예수를 위해 감옥에 갇힌 나 바울과 우리의 형제 디모데가 이 편지를 씁니다. 우리의 사랑하는 친구이며 우리와 같이 일하는 빌레몬과, 2그대의 집에서 모이는 교회의 여러분과 우리 자매 압비아와, 우리 전우 아킵보에게 이 편지를 씁니다. 3우리 아버지 하나님과 주 예수 그리스도께서 내려 주시는 은혜와 평화가 여러분에게 있기를 빕니다.
빌레몬의 사랑과 믿음 4나는 그대를 위하여 기도할 때마다 하나님께 감사를 드립니다. 5그대가 주 예수를 잘 믿고 모든 성도를 사랑하고 있다는 말을 듣고 있기 때문입니다. 6나는 그대가 믿음에서 우러나 다른 믿는 이들과 활발하게 사귀기 바랍니다. 그리고 그 사귐을 통하여 우리가 그리스도 안에서 누리고 있는 온갖 좋은 것을 더욱 잘 알게 되기를 빕니다. 7나는 사랑하는 그대가 성도들에게 사랑을 베풀어 그들의 마음에 용기를 북돋아 주었다는 말을 들었습니다. 그 소식이 내게 큰 기쁨과 위로를 안겨 주었습니다.
오네시모를 형제처럼 받아들여라 8나는 그리스도 안에서 그대가 마땅히 해야 할 일을 대담하게 명령할 수도 있습니다. 9그러나 나는 그대의 사랑에 힘입어 그대에게 간곡하게 부탁합니다. 이미 늙고, 지금은 그리스도 예수를 위해서 감옥에 갇힌 몸인 나 바울이 부탁합니다. 10내가 감옥에 있는 동안에 얻은 아들 오네시모를 위하여 그대에게 부탁합니다. 11그가 전에는 그대에게 쓸모없는 사람이었지만, 이제는 그대뿐 아니라 내게도 쓸모 있는* 사람이 되었습니다. 12나는 그를 그대에게 돌려보냅니다. 그를 보내는 것은 내 심장을 떼어 보내는 것과 같습니다. 13나는 그를 내 곁에 두고, 내가 기쁜 소식*을 위하여 감옥살이를 하는 동안 그대를 대신하여 내 시중을 들게 하고도 싶었습니다. 14그러나 나는 그대의 승낙 없이는 아무것도 하고 싶지 않았습니다. 그대가 하는 좋은 일이 마지못해 하는 것이 아니라 스스로 기뻐서 하는 것이 되게 하려는 것입니다. 15그가 잠시 그대 곁을 떠나 있었던 것은, 어쩌면 그가 그대에게 돌아가 영원히 그대 곁에 있게 하려는 것이었는지도 모릅니다. 16이제부터 그는 종으로서가 아니라 종 이상으로 곧 사랑하는 형제로서 그대와 같이 있게 될 것입니다. 그는 나에게 아주 귀중한 사람입니다. 그러나 그는 한 사람으로서나 주 안에서 한 형제로서나, 나보다 그대에게 얼마나 더 귀중한 사람이겠습니까! 17그대가 나를 같은 일을 하는 동지라고 생각한다면, 나를 반기듯이 그를 반갑게 맞아 주십시오. 18그리고 만일 그가 그대에게 무슨 손해를 끼치거나 빚진 것이 있다면, 그것을 내 앞으로 달아 놓으십시오. 19”나 바울이 그것을 갚겠다.”라고 내 손으로 이렇게 직접 씁니다. 그대가 그리스도를 믿는 사람으로 살고 있다는 사실 자체가 내게 빚을 진 것이지만, 나는 그 빚에 대해서 아무 말도 하지 않겠습니다. 20형제여, 나는 주님 안에서 그대에게 도움*을 청하려고 합니다. 그리스도 안에서 내 마음에 새로운 힘을 불어넣어 주십시오. 21그대가 내 청을 들어 주리라 굳게 믿기에 이 편지를 씁니다. 나는 그대가, 내가 청하는 것 이상으로 해 주리라는 것을 압니다. 22그리고 한 가지를 더 부탁합니다. 내가 묵을 방을 하나 마련해 주십시오. 하나님께서 여러분의 기도를 들으시고 나를 여러분에게 보내 주시기를 바랍니다.
마지막 인사 23그리스도 예수 안에서 나와 함께 갇혀 있는 에바브라가 그대에게 문안합니다. 24그리고 나와 함께 일하는 마가와 아리스다고와 데마와 누가도 그대에게 문안합니다. 25주 예수 그리스도의 은혜가 여러분의 영과 함께하시기를 빕니다. |
