Paul’s Work in Thessalonica1Brothers and sisters, you know that our visit to you was not a failure. 2Before we came to you, people in Philippi abused us with insults and made us suffer. You know all about that. And then, when we came to you, many people there caused trouble for us. But our God gave us the courage we needed to tell you his Good News*. 3When we encourage people to believe the Good News, it’s not out of wrong motives. We are not trying to trick or fool anyone. 4No, we did it because God is the one who gave us this work. And this was only after he tested us and saw that we could be trusted to do it. So when we speak, we are only trying to please God, not anyone else. He is the one who can see what is in our hearts. 5You know that we never tried to influence you by saying nice things about you. We were not trying to get your money. We had no greed to hide from you. God knows that this is true. 6We were not looking for praise from people - not from you or anyone else. 7When we were with you, as apostles* of Christ we could have used our authority to make you help us. But we were very gentle* with you. We were like a mother caring for her little children. 8We loved you very much, so we were happy to share God’s Good News with you. But not only that - we were also happy to share even our own lives with you. 9Brothers and sisters, I know that you remember how hard we worked. We worked night and day to support ourselves, so that we would not be a burden to anyone while we did the work of telling you God’s Good News. 10When we were there with you believers, we were pure, honest, and without fault in the way we lived. You know, just as God does, that this is true. 11You know that we treated each one of you the way a father treats his own children. 12We encouraged you, we comforted you, and we told you to live good lives for God. He calls you to be part of his glorious kingdom. 13Also, we always thank God because of the way you accepted his message*. You heard it and accepted it as God’s message, not our own. And it really is God’s message. And it works in you who believe. 14Brothers and sisters, you are just like God’s churches* in Judea*. I mean that you were treated badly by your own people, just as those believers in Christ Jesus were treated badly by other Jews - 15the same Jews who killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets*. And they forced us to leave their country. They are not pleasing to God, and they are against everyone else. 16And they are trying to stop us from teaching those who are not Jews. They don’t want them to be saved. But they are just adding more and more sins to the ones they already have. Now the time has come for them to suffer God’s anger.
Paul’s Desire to Visit Them Again 17Brothers and sisters, we were separated from you for a short time. But even though we were not there, our thoughts were still with you. We wanted very much to see you, and we tried very hard to do this. 18Yes, we wanted to come to you. I, Paul, tried more than once to come, but Satan* stopped us. 19You are our hope, our joy, and the crown* we will be proud of when our Lord Jesus Christ comes. 20You bring us honor and joy. |

데살로니가에서 바울이 했던 일 1형제자매 여러분, 여러분은 우리가 여러분을 찾아갔던 것이 헛된 일이 아니었다는 것을 아십니다. 2여러분이 알고 있듯이, 우리는 여러분에게 가기 전에 빌립보*에서 어려움을 겪고 모욕을 당했습니다. 그러나 우리는, 우리 하나님의 도우심을 받아 강한 반대를 무릅쓰고, 하나님의 기쁜 소식*을 담대하게 여러분에게 전했습니다. 3우리는 잘못된 생각이나 불순한 동기에서 여러분에게 호소하는 것이 아닙니다. 그리고 여러분을 속이려는 것도 아닙니다. 4그와는 반대로, 우리는 하나님께로부터 기쁜 소식을 맡길 만하다는 인정을 받은 사람들로서 말합니다. 우리는 사람을 기쁘게 하려 하지 않습니다. 우리는 우리의 마음을 살피시는 하나님을 기쁘게 해 드리려 애씁니다. 5여러분이 알고 있듯이, 우리는 결코 아첨하는 말을 한 적이 없으며, 기쁜 소식*을 전한다는 구실로 우리의 욕심을 채운 적도 없습니다. 이것에 대해서는 하나님께서 우리의 증인이십니다. 6우리는 여러분이나 또 다른 누구나 할 것 없이 도무지 사람에게서는 칭찬을 받으려 하지 않았습니다. 7물론 우리는 그리스도의 사도*들로서 여러분에게 짐을 지울 수도 있었습니다. 그러나 우리는 여러분과 함께 있을 때, 마치 어머니가 사랑으로 자기 아이들을 돌보듯이 여러분을 부드럽게 대하였습니다. 8우리는 여러분을 사랑한 나머지, 여러분에게 하나님의 기쁜 소식*을 전할 뿐 아니라 우리의 목숨까지도 기꺼이 내주려 하였습니다. 여러분이 그토록 우리에게 사랑스러운 사람들이 되었기 때문입니다. 9형제자매 여러분, 여러분은 틀림없이 우리가 열심히 일한 것을 기억할 것입니다. 우리는 여러분에게 하나님의 기쁜 소식을 전하는 동안에, 어느 누구에게도 짐이 되지 않으려고 밤낮으로 일했습니다. 10또 우리가 믿는 여러분을 대할 때에, 우리의 행동이 경건하고 올바르고 흠잡힐 데 없었다는 것에 대해서는 여러분이 증인이고 또 하나님이 증인이십니다. 11여러분은, 우리가 여러분 한 사람 한 사람 대하기를 마치 아버지가 자녀를 대하듯이 하였다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 12우리는 하나님의 백성으로서 마땅히 좇아야 할 길을 따라 살라고 여러분을 권하고 격려하고 타일렀습니다. 하나님께서는 당신의 영광을 나누어 주시려고, 여러분을 당신의 나라로 들어오라고 부르십니다. 13또 우리가 하나님께 끊임없이 감사드리는 것은, 우리가 여러분에게 하나님의 말씀을 전했을 때에, 여러분이 그것을 사람의 말로 받아들이지 않고 하나님의 말씀으로 받아들였다는 것입니다. 실제로 그것은 하나님의 말씀입니다. 그리고 그 말씀을 믿는 여러분 안에서 활동하며 여러분을 변화시키고 있습니다. 14형제자매 여러분, 여러분은 동족에게서 박해를 받았습니다. 이런 점에서 여러분은 유대에 있는 하나님의 교회에 속한 믿는 이들을 본받은 사람들이 되었습니다. 그들은 예수 그리스도를 믿었기 때문에 자기네 동족인 유대 사람에게서 박해를 받았습니다. 15유대 사람들은 주 예수와 예언자*들을 죽였으며, 우리를 내쫓았습니다. 그들은 하나님의 마음을 상하게 해 드리고, 모든 사람의 원수가 되고 있습니다. 16곧, 이방 사람에게 기쁜 소식*을 전하여 구원을 얻게 하려는 우리의 일을 방해하고 있는 것입니다. 이렇게 그들은 언제나 자기들의 죄를 계속 쌓아 가고 있습니다만, 마침내 하나님의 진노*가 그들 위에 내렸습니다.
바울, 다시 데살로니가를 방문하고 싶어하다 17형제자매 여러분, 우리가 여러분과 잠깐 동안 떨어져 지내게 되었습니다. 그러나 우리는 몸으로만 떠나 있을 뿐 마음으로는 언제나 여러분 곁에 있습니다. 우리는 여러분을 그리워한 나머지, 여러분을 찾아가 보려고 온갖 노력을 다하였습니다. 18우리는 여러분을 만나러 가려고 무척 애를 썼습니다. 실제로 나 바울이 몇 번 여러분을 찾아가려 하였으나, 그때마다 사탄이 우리를 방해하였습니다. 19우리 주 예수께서 다시 오실 때에, 그분 앞에서 우리의 희망이나 기쁨이나 자랑스러운 월계관이 될 것이 무엇이겠습니까? 그것은 바로 여러분이 아니겠습니까? 20그렇습니다. 바로 여러분이 우리의 영광이고 기쁨입니다! |
