1Greetings from Paul and Timothy, servants of Jesus Christ.
To all of you in Philippi who are God’s holy people* in Christ Jesus, including your elders* and special servants*. 2Grace* and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul’s Prayer 3I thank God every time I remember you. 4And I always pray for all of you with joy. 5I thank God for the help you gave me while I told people the Good News*. You helped from the first day you believed until now. 6I am sure that the good work God began in you will continue until he completes it on the day when Jesus Christ comes again. 7I know I am right to think like this about all of you because you are so close to my heart. This is because you have all played such an important part in God’s grace* to me - now, during this time that I am in prison, and whenever I am defending and proving the truth of the Good News. 8God knows that I want very much to see you. I love all of you with the love of Christ Jesus. 9This is my prayer for you:
that your love will grow more and more;
that you will have knowledge and understanding with your love; 10that you will see the difference between what is important and what is not and choose what is important;
that you will be pure and blameless for the coming of Christ; 11that your life will be full of the many good works that are produced by Jesus Christ to bring glory* and praise to God.
Paul’s Troubles Help the Lord’s Work 12Brothers and sisters, I want you to know that all that has happened to me has helped to spread the Good News*. 13All the Roman guards and all the others here know that I am in prison for serving Christ. 14My being in prison has caused most of the believers* to put their trust in the Lord and to show more courage in telling people God’s message*. 15Some people are telling the message about Christ because they are jealous and bitter. Others do it because they want to help. 16They are doing it out of love. They know that God gave me the work of defending the Good News. 17But those others tell about Christ because of their selfish ambition. Their reason for doing it is wrong. They only do it because they think it will make trouble for me in prison. 18But that doesn’t matter. What is important is that they are telling people about Christ, whether they are sincere or not. So I am glad they are doing it.
I will continue to be glad, 19because I know that your prayers and the help the Spirit* of Jesus Christ gives me will cause this trouble to result in my freedom*. 20I am full of hope and feel sure I will not have any reason to be ashamed. I am certain I will continue to have the same boldness to speak freely that I always have. I will let God use my life to bring more honor to Christ. It doesn’t matter whether I live or die. 21To me, the only important thing about living is Christ. And even death would be for my benefit*. 22If I continue living here on earth, I will be able to work for the Lord. But what would I choose - to live or to die? I don’t know. 23It would be a hard choice. Sometimes I want to leave this life and be with Christ. That would be much better for me; 24however, you people need me here alive. 25I am sure of this, so I know that I will stay here and be with you to help you grow and have joy in your faith. 26When I am there with you again, you will be bursting with pride over what Christ Jesus did to help me. 27Just be sure you live as God’s people in a way that honors the Good News of Christ. Then if I come and visit you or if I am away from you, I will hear good things about you. I will know that you stand together with the same purpose and that you work together like a team to help others believe the Good News. 28And you will not be afraid of those who are against you. All of this is proof from God that you are being saved and that your enemies will be lost. 29God has blessed you in ways that serve Christ. He allowed you to believe in Christ. But that is not all. He has also given you the honor of suffering for Christ. Both of these bring glory* to Christ. 30You saw the difficulties I had to face, and you hear that I am still having troubles. Now you must face them too. |

인사 1그리스도 예수의 종인 나 바울과 디모데가, 예수 그리스도 안에 있는 빌립보*의 모든 성도*들과 교회의 지도자들*과 섬기는 일을 맡은 분들*에게 이 편지를 씁니다. 2하나님 우리 아버지와 우리 주 예수 그리스도께서 주시는 은혜와 평화가 여러분과 함께하시기를 바랍니다.
바울의 기도 3나는 여러분을 생각할 때마다 하나님께 감사를 드립니다. 4그리고 여러분을 위하여 기도할 때에도 기쁜 마음으로 기도합니다. 5여러분은 믿기 시작한 첫날부터 지금까지 기쁜 소식*을 전하는 일에 나와 함께 참여해 왔기 때문입니다. 6하나님께서는 여러분과 함께 좋은 일을 시작하셨고, 지금도 여러분 가운데서 이 일을 계속하고 계십니다. 그리고 예수 그리스도께서 다시 오시는 그날이 되면, 이 일을 다 이루어 내시리라는 것을 굳게 믿습니다. 7내가 여러분 모두를 이렇게 생각하는 것은 당연한 일로 여겨집니다. 그것은, 여러분이 언제나 내 마음속에 들어 있기 때문입니다. 여러분은 모두 내가 감옥에 있는 동안 나를 도왔습니다. 그리고 내가 기쁜 소식을 변호하고, 그것이 진리라는 것을 증거할 때에도 여러분은 저를 도왔습니다. 그러니 여러분은 하나님께서 내게 맡기신 일을 나와 함께 해 온 사람들입니다. 8내가 여러분 모두를 얼마나 그리워하며, 예수 그리스도의 사랑으로 사랑하는지 하나님께서 더 잘 알고 계십니다. 9나는 여러분을 위하여 하나님께 기도합니다. 여러분의 사랑이 보다 더 풍성해지고, 지식과 모든 일을 꿰뚫어 볼 수 있는 힘이 더욱 자라서, 10가장 좋은 것이 무엇인가를 분별할 수 있게 해 주시기를 기도합니다. 그리하여 흠 없고 순결한 사람들로서 그리스도의 날을 맞게 해 주시고, 11예수 그리스도의 도움으로 선한 일을 많이 하여, 하나님께 영광과 찬양을 돌릴 수 있게 해 주시기를 기도합니다.
바울의 고난이 주님의 일에 도움이 되다 12형제자매 여러분, 내게 일어난 일이 도리어 기쁜 소식*을 널리 알리는 데에 도움이 되었습니다. 나는 여러분이 이 사실을 알아주기 바랍니다. 13내가 그리스도를 섬기기 때문에 감옥에 갇혔다는 사실이 모든 로마 경비대원들과 그 밖의 다른 사람들에게도 알려졌습니다. 14그리고 대부분의 형제자매들이 감옥에 갇힌 나를 보고, 주님께서 도와주실 것을 더욱 믿게 되었습니다. 그리하여 그들은 두려움 없이 아주 담대하게 기쁜 소식*을 전하고 있습니다. 15어떤 사람들은 나에 대한 질투심과 경쟁심에서 그리스도를 전하고, 또 어떤 사람들은 좋은 뜻에서 그리스도를 전합니다. 16좋은 뜻으로 그리스도를 전하는 사람들은, 기쁜 소식을 변호하라고 하나님께서 나를 이런 상황에 처하게 하신 것을 알고, 사랑의 마음에서 기쁜 소식을 전합니다. 17그러나 질투와 경쟁하는 마음에서 그리스도를 전하는 사람들은, 순수한 마음에서가 아니라 이기적인 야망에서 그렇게 합니다. 그들은 내가 감옥에 있는 동안 나를 더욱 괴롭힐 수 있다고 잘못 생각하기 때문에 그렇게 합니다. 18그러나 그런 것이 무슨 상관이겠습니까? 좋은 동기에서든 나쁜 동기에서든, 여러 가지 방법으로 그리스도가 널리 알려진다는 사실이 중요합니다. 그래서 나는 기쁩니다.
그리고 앞으로도 계속 기뻐할 것입니다. 19여러분이 나를 위해서 간절히 기도하고 있고, 하나님께서 예수 그리스도의 영*을 주시어 나를 돕고 계십니다. 그러니 결국에는 이 모든 일이 나의 구원에 이르게 하리라는 것을 알고 있기 때문입니다. 20나의 간절한 기대와 희망은 내가 어떤 일에도 부끄러워하지 않고 용기를 가지는 것입니다. 그리하여 죽든지 살든지, 그리고 언제나 그래 왔듯이 지금도 그리스도께서 내 몸을 통하여 높임을 받으시는 것입니다. 21내게는 사는 것이 곧 그리스도를 위한 일이며, 죽는 것도 이익이 될 뿐입니다. 22그러나 내가 이 몸으로 죽지 않고 산다면, 주님을 위해서 보람된 일을 할 수 있을 것입니다. 그러니 어느 쪽을 택해야 하겠습니까? 나는 무어라고 말해야 할지 모르겠습니다! 23나는 이 둘 사이에 끼여서 갈팡질팡하고 있습니다. 마음 같아서는 세상을 떠나 그리스도와 함께 살고 싶습니다. 내게는 그것이 훨씬 더 좋을 것 같습니다. 24그러나 여러분을 위해서는 내가 이 세상에 살아 있을 필요가 있습니다. 25이것을 분명히 믿기 때문에, 나는 살아남아서 여러분과 함께 있게 되리라는 것을 알고 있습니다. 그러면서 나는 여러분의 믿음이 자라고, 여러분이 믿음 안에서 기쁨을 누리도록 도울 것입니다. 26그렇게 되면 내가 다시 여러분을 찾아갈 때에, 그리스도 예수 안에서 나로 인한 여러분의 자랑이 더욱 넘치게 될 것입니다. 27내게 무슨 일이 일어나더라도, 여러분은 그리스도의 기쁜 소식에 걸맞게 사십시오. 그러면 내가 가서 여러분을 다시 보게 되거나, 이렇게 멀리 떨어져 소식을 듣게 되더라도, 나는 여러분이 한 마음 한 뜻으로 굳게 서서 기쁜 소식에 선포된 믿음을 위해 하나로 뭉쳐 싸우고 있다는 것을 알게 될 것입니다. 28그리고 여러분이 여러분을 반대하는 자들을 조금도 겁내지 않는다는 소식도 듣게 될 것입니다. 여러분의 그러한 용기가, 그들은 멸망하나 여러분은 구원을 받으리라는 징표가 될 것입니다. 이 모든 것 안에서 일하시는 분은 하나님이십니다. 29하나님께서는 여러분에게 그리스도를 믿을 수 있는 특권과, 그분을 위해 어려움을 당하는 특권을 주셨습니다. 이 두 가지가 다 그리스도를 위하는 일입니다. 30내가 여러분과 함께 있는 동안, 여러분은 내가 기쁜 소식*을 알리려고 반대자들과 싸우는 것을 보았으며, 또 내가 지금도 감옥에서 여전히 같은 싸움을 하고 있다는 소식을 듣고 있을 터인데, 지금 여러분이 하고 있는 싸움도 내가 하고 있는 것과 같은 싸움입니다. |
