Dead to Sin but Alive in Christ1So do you think we should continue sinning so that God will give us more and more grace*? 2Of course not! Our old sinful life ended. It’s dead. So how can we continue living in sin? 3Did you forget that all of us became part of Christ Jesus when we were baptized*? In our baptism* we shared in his death. 4So when we were baptized, we were buried with Christ and took part in his death. And just as Christ was raised from death by the wonderful power of the Father, so we can now live a new life. 5Christ died, and we have been joined with him by dying too. So we will also be joined with him by rising from death as he did. 6We know that our old life was put to death on the cross with Christ. This happened so that our sinful selves would have no power over us. Then we would not be slaves to sin. 7Anyone who has died is made free from sin’s control. 8If we died with Christ, we know that we will also live with him. 9Christ was raised from death. And we know that he cannot die again. Death has no power over him now. 10Yes, when Christ died, he died to defeat the power of sin one time - enough for all time. He now has a new life, and his new life is with God. 11In the same way, you should see yourselves as being dead to the power of sin and alive for God through Christ Jesus. 12But don’t let sin control your life here on earth. You must not be ruled by the things your sinful self makes you want to do. 13Don’t offer the parts of your body to serve sin. Don’t use your bodies to do evil, but offer yourselves to God, as people who have died and now live. Offer the parts of your body to God to be used for doing good. 14Sin will not be your master, because you are not under law. You now live under God’s grace.
Slaves of Goodness 15So what should we do? Should we sin because we are under grace* and not under law? Certainly not! 16Surely you know that you become the slaves of whatever you give yourselves to. Anything or anyone you follow will be your master. You can follow sin, or you can obey God. Following sin brings spiritual death, but obeying God makes you right with him. 17In the past you were slaves to sin - sin controlled you. But thank God, you fully obeyed what you were taught. 18You were made free from sin, and now you are slaves to what is right. 19I use this example from everyday life because you need help in understanding spiritual truths. In the past you offered the parts of your body to be slaves to your immoral and sinful thoughts. The result was that you lived only for sin. In the same way, you must now offer yourselves to be slaves to what is right. Then you will live only for God. 20In the past you were slaves to sin, and you did not even think about doing right. 21You did evil things, and now you are ashamed of what you did. Did those things help you? No, they only brought death. 22But now you are free from sin. You have become slaves of God, and the result is that you live only for God. This will bring you eternal life. 23When people sin, they earn what sin pays - death. But God gives his people a free gift - eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. |

죄에는 죽고, 그리스도 안에서 살고 1그러면 우리가 무슨 말을 해야 하겠습니까? “하나님께서 더욱 많은 은혜를 베푸시게 우리가 계속 죄를 짓자.”라고 말할 수 있겠습니까? 2결코 그럴 수 없습니다. 우리는 죄에게 죽은 사람들입니다. 그런 우리가 어떻게 계속하여 죄를 지으며 살 수 있겠습니까? 3우리는 그리스도 예수와 하나가 되는 세례를 받았습니다. 그때에 우리는 그분의 죽음과 하나가 되는 세례도 받았다는 것을 여러분은 모르십니까? 4그러므로 우리는, 그분의 죽음과 하나가 되는 세례를 통하여 그리스도와 함께 묻혔습니다. 그것은, 그리스도께서 당신의 아버지의 영광스러운 능력으로 죽은 자들 가운데서 살아나신 것처럼, 우리도 새로운 삶을 살려는 것이었습니다. 5우리가 그리스도처럼 죽어서 그분과 하나가 되었으니, 또한 그리스도처럼 다시 살아나서 그분과 하나가 될 것입니다. 6우리는 우리의 옛사람이 그리스도와 함께 십자가 위에서 죽었다는 것을 압니다. 그것은, 죄 많은 우리의 몸의 세력을 무너뜨림으로써 우리가 죄의 종살이에서 놓여나게 하려는 것이었습니다. 7죽은 사람은 죄의 다스림에서 벗어나기 때문입니다. 8우리가 그리스도와 함께 죽었으면, 그리스도와 함께 우리도 또한 살아날 것을 믿습니다. 9그것은, 그리스도께서 죽은 자들 가운데서 살리심을 받으셨으니, 그분께서 다시는 죽을 수 없다는 것을 우리가 알기 때문입니다. 이제는 죽음에게 그분을 다스리는 힘이 없습니다. 10그리스도께서 죽으셨을 때에, 그분은 죄의 권세에 대하여 처음이자 마지막으로 죽으셨습니다. 그러나 그분이 지금 살고 계신 삶은 하나님을 위하여 사시는 것입니다. 11이와 마찬가지로 여러분도, 자신들은 죄의 권세에 대하여는 죽은 사람이며, 예수 그리스도 안에서 하나님을 위하여 살아 있는 사람이라고 생각하십시오. 12그러므로 죄가 여러분의 죽을 몸을 다스리지 못하게 하여, 여러분이 몸의 악한 욕망에 복종하는 일이 없도록 하십시오. 13그리고 여러분의 몸의 지체들을 죄에 내맡겨서 악의 도구로 쓰이게 해서는 안 됩니다. 오히려, 여러분은 더 이상 죽은 것이 아니라 살아 있으니, 여러분 자신을 하나님께 맡기십시오. 그리고 여러분의 몸의 지체들을 하나님께 맡겨서 의로운 일을 하는 도구로 쓰이게 하십시오. 14죄가 더는 여러분을 다스리지 못할 것입니다. 여러분이 이제는 율법 아래 있지 않고, 하나님의 은혜 아래 있기 때문입니다.
하나님의 종들 15그렇다면 우리는 어떻게 해야 하겠습니까? 우리가 율법 아래 있지 않고, 하나님의 은혜 아래 있으니 마음 놓고 죄를 지으며 살아야 하겠습니까? 결코 그렇지 않습니다. 16여러분이 어떤 사람에게 자신을 종으로 내맡겨서 복종하게 하면, 여러분이 복종하는 그 사람의 종이 된다는 것을 모르십니까? 여러분이, 죽음에 이르게 하는 죄의 종이 되든지, 의로운 삶에 이르게 하는 순종의 종이 되든지 마찬가지입니다. 17전에는 여러분이 죄의 종이었으나, 이제는 하나님께서 여러분을 교훈의 본에 맡기셨습니다. 그런데 여러분이 마음을 다해 그 본을 따르니, 하나님께 감사드립니다! 18여러분은 죄에서 풀려나서 의로운 행실의 종이 되었습니다. 19나는 사람의 일을 예로 들어 말하고 있습니다. 그것은 여러분의 인간적인 본성으로는 이러한 진리를 깨닫기 어렵기 때문입니다. 전에는 여러분의 몸의 지체를 성적인 불결함과 불순종의 종으로 내맡겼습니다. 그 결과로 여러분은 불순종의 삶을 살았습니다. 이와 마찬가지로 이제는, 여러분의 몸의 지체를 의의 종으로 내맡기십시오. 그러면 여러분은 하나님께 헌신하는 거룩한 삶을 살게 됩니다. 20여러분이 죄의 종이었을 때에는, 의롭게 살아야 할 의무가 없었습니다. 21그 시절에 여러분은 무슨 열매를 거두었습니까? 여러분이 지금은 부끄럽게 여기는 것들을 거두었습니다. 그리고 그런 것들의 결과는 죽음입니다. 22그러나 이제는 여러분이 죄에서 자유로워졌고 하나님의 종이 되었으니, 여러분이 거두고 있는 좋은 열매는 거룩함에 이르게 하며, 그 결과는 영원한 생명입니다. 23죄가 주는 품삯은 죽음입니다. 그러나 하나님의 선물은 그리스도 예수 우리 주 안에서 누리는 영원한 생명입니다. |
