The Meeting at Jerusalem1Then some men came to Antioch from Judea and began teaching the non-Jewish believers*: “You cannot be saved if you are not circumcised* as Moses* taught us.” 2Paul and Barnabas were against this teaching and argued with these men about it. So the group decided to send Paul, Barnabas, and some others to Jerusalem to talk more about this with the apostles* and elders*. 3The church* helped them get ready to leave on their trip. The men went through the countries of Phoenicia and Samaria, where they told all about how the non-Jewish people had turned to the true God. This made all the believers very happy. 4When the men arrived in Jerusalem, the apostles, the elders, and the whole church welcomed them. Paul, Barnabas, and the others told about all that God had done with them. 5Some of the believers in Jerusalem had belonged to the Pharisees*. They stood up and said, “The non-Jewish believers must be circumcised. We must tell them to obey the Law of Moses!” 6Then the apostles and the elders gathered to study this problem. 7After a long debate, Peter stood up and said to them, “My brothers, I am sure you remember what happened in the early days. God chose me from among you to tell the Good News* to those who are not Jewish. It was from me that they heard the Good News and believed. 8God knows everyone, even their thoughts, and he accepted these non-Jewish people. He showed this to us by giving them the Holy Spirit* the same as he did to us. 9To God, those people are not different from us. When they believed, God made their hearts pure. 10So now, why are you putting a heavy burden* around the necks of the non-Jewish followers of Jesus? Are you trying to make God angry? We and our fathers* were not able to carry that burden. 11No, we believe that we and these people will be saved the same way - by the grace* of the Lord Jesus.” 12Then the whole group became quiet. They listened while Paul and Barnabas told about all the miraculous signs* and wonders* that God had done through them among the non-Jewish people. 13When they finished speaking, James said, “My brothers, listen to me. 14Simon Peter has told us how God showed his love for the non-Jewish people. For the first time, God accepted them and made them his people. 15The words of the prophets* agree with this too: 16‘I will return after this. I will build David’s* house again. It has fallen down.
I will build again the parts of his house that have been pulled down. I will make his house new. 17Then the rest of the world will look for the Lord God - all those of other nations who are my people too.
The Lord said this. And he is the one who does all these things.’* 18‘All this has been known from the beginning of time.’* 19“So I think we should not make things hard for those who have turned to God from among the non-Jewish people. 20Instead, we should send a letter telling them only the things they should not do:
Don’t eat food that has been given to idols*. This makes the food unclean.
Don’t be involved in sexual sin.
Don’t eat meat from animals that have been strangled or any meat that still has the blood in it. 21They should not do any of these things, because there are still men in every city who teach the Law of Moses. The words of Moses have been read in the synagogue* every Sabbath* day for many years.”
The Letter to the Non-Jewish Believers 22The apostles*, the elders*, and the whole church* wanted to send some men with Paul and Barnabas to Antioch. The group decided to choose some of their own men. They chose Judas (also called Barsabbas) and Silas, men who were respected by the believers*. 23The group sent the letter with these men. The letter said:
From the apostles and elders, your brothers.
To all the non-Jewish brothers in the city of Antioch and in the countries of Syria and Cilicia.
Dear Brothers: 24We have heard that some men have come to you from our group. What they said troubled and upset you. But we did not tell them to do this. 25We have all agreed to choose some men and send them to you. They will be with our dear friends, Barnabas and Paul. 26Barnabas and Paul have given their lives to serve our Lord Jesus Christ. 27So we have sent Judas and Silas with them. They will tell you the same things. 28We agree with the Holy Spirit* that you should have no more burdens, except for these necessary things: 29Don’t eat food that has been given to idols*.
Don’t eat meat from animals that have been strangled or any meat that still has the blood in it.
Don’t be involved in sexual sin. If you stay away from these, you will do well.
We say goodbye now. 30So Paul, Barnabas, Judas, and Silas left Jerusalem and went to Antioch. There they gathered the group of believers together and gave them the letter. 31When the believers read it, they were happy. The letter comforted them. 32Judas and Silas, who were also prophets*, said many things to encourage the believers* and make them stronger in their faith. 33After Judas and Silas stayed there for a while, they left. They received a blessing of peace from the believers*. Then they went back to those who had sent them. 34* 35But Paul and Barnabas stayed in Antioch. They and many others taught the believers and told other people the Good News* about the Lord.
Paul and Barnabas Separate 36A few days later, Paul said to Barnabas, “We should go back to all the towns where we told people the message* of the Lord. We should visit the believers* to see how they are doing.” 37Barnabas wanted to bring John Mark with them too. 38But on their first trip John Mark did not continue with them in the work. He had left them at Pamphylia. So Paul did not think it was a good idea to take him this time. 39Paul and Barnabas had a big argument about this. It was so bad that they separated and went different ways. Barnabas sailed to Cyprus and took Mark with him. 40Paul chose Silas to go with him. The believers* in Antioch put Paul into the Lord’s care and sent him out. 41Paul and Silas went through the countries of Syria and Cilicia, helping the churches* grow stronger. |

예루살렘 회의 1유대에서 몇 사람이 내려와서 이방 사람* 신자들에게 이렇게 가르치고 있었다. “여러분은 모세의 관습에 따라서 할례*를 받지 않으면 구원을 받을 수 없습니다.” 2그리하여 바울과 바나바 두 사람과 그들 사이에 큰 다툼과 논쟁이 벌어졌다. 안디옥교회는 바울과 바나바를 예루살렘으로 보내기로 하였다. 그리고 다른 믿는 이들도 몇 사람 딸려 보내기로 하였다. 이 문제로 사도들과 장로들을 찾아보게 하려는 것이었다. 3그들은 교회의 보냄을 받고* 길을 떠나, 베니게와 사마리아 지방을 거쳐 가면서 이방 사람들이 참 하나님께 돌아온 이야기를 들려주었다. 모든 믿는 이들이 그 소식을 듣고 크게 기뻐하였다. 4그들이 예루살렘에 이르자, 교회와 사도들과 장로*들이 그들을 반갑게 맞아 주었다. 그들은 하나님께서 자기들과 함께해 주신 일들을 모두 보고하였다. 5그런데 바리새파*에 속하였다가 믿게 된 몇 사람이 일어나 이렇게 말하였다. “이방 사람들도 할례*를 받아야 합니다. 그리고 그들도 모세의 율법을 지키라고 명령하여야 합니다.” 6사도들과 장로*들이 이 문제를 의논하려고 모였다. 7오랫동안 토론한 끝에 베드로가 일어나서 그들에게 말하였다. “형제 여러분, 일찍이 하나님께서 여러분 가운데서 저를 택하셔서, 저를 통해 이방 사람들이 기쁜 소식*의 말씀을 듣고 믿도록 하셨다는 것을 여러분은 알고 계십니다. 8그리고 사람의 속마음을 아시는 하나님께서, 우리와 마찬가지로 이방 사람에게도 성령*을 주심으로써, 이방 사람들을 인정하신다는 것을 보여 주셨습니다. 9하나님께서는 그들의 믿음을 보시고 그들의 마음을 깨끗하게 하셨습니다. 하나님께서는 그들과 우리를 차별하지 않으십니다. 10그런데 어찌하여 여러분은, 이 이방인 제자들의 목에 무거운 멍에를 메워서 하나님을 시험하려 합니까? 이것은 우리 자신이나 우리 조상들도 질 수 없었던 멍에입니다. 11우리는 주 예수의 은혜로 구원을 받습니다. 그리고 이방 사람들도 그렇게 구원을 받는다고 믿습니다.” 12그러자 온 회중이 입을 다물고, 바나바와 바울이 하나님께서 이방 사람들 가운데서 자신들을 통하여 행하신 기적과 놀라운 일들에 대해 들려주는 이야기에 귀를 기울였다. 13그들이 이야기를 마친 뒤에 야고보가 입을 열었다. “형제 여러분, 제 말을 들으십시오. 14하나님께서, 이방 사람 가운데서 한 백성을 뽑아 자신의 백성으로 삼으시려고, 그들에 대한 관심을 처음에 어떻게 보이셨는지 시몬(베드로)이 우리에게 말해 주었습니다. 15그리고 예언자*들의 말도 하나님께서 하신 이 일과 들어맞습니다. 예언서에는 이렇게 적혀 있습니다. 16’이 뒤에 내가 돌아와서 무너진 다윗의 집을 다시 세울 것이다. 나는 그 집의 허물어진 곳을 다시 지어서 새 집으로 지어 놓겠다. 17그리하여 모든 사람 곧 내가 내 백성으로 부른 모든 이방 사람까지도 나 주를 찾을 것이다. 이 일들을 이루는 주께서 말씀하신다. 18주께서는 이 일들을 오래 전부터 알게 하셨다.’암 9:11-12 19그러므로 저는 하나님께 돌아오는 이방 사람들을 괴롭혀서는 안 된다고 생각합니다. 20다만 그들에게 편지를 보내어, 우상*에게 바친 더러운 음식을 먹지 말고, 부도덕한 성 관계를 갖지 말며, 목 졸라 죽인 짐승이나 피를 먹지 말라고 하는 것이 좋겠습니다. 21예로부터 어느 도시에나 모세의 법을 가르치는 사람들이 있어서, 안식일*마다 회당*에서 이러한 법들이 읽히고 있습니다.”
이방인 신자들에게 보낸 편지 22그리하여 사도들과 장로*들이 온 교회의 동의를 얻어서, 몇 사람을 대표로 뽑아 바울과 바나바와 함께 안디옥으로 보내기로 결정하였다. 그들은 형제들 가운데서 지도자인 바사바라고 하는 유다와 실라를 뽑아 보냈다. 23그리고 그들 편에 다음과 같은 편지를 보냈다.
여러분의 형제들인 사도들과 장로*들이 안디옥과 수리아와 길리기아의 이방인 형제 여러분에게 인사를 드립니다. 24우리 가운데서 몇 사람이 우리의 허락도 받지 않고 여러분에게 가서, 여러분을 혼란에 빠뜨리고 여러 말로 여러분의 마음을 어지럽게 하였다는 소식을 들었습니다. 25우리는 대표를 뽑아서 사랑하는 바나바와 바울과 함께 여러분에게 보내기로 하였습니다. 26바나바와 바울은 주 예수 그리스도의 이름을 위하여 목숨을 내놓은 사람들입니다. 27그래서 우리는 유다와 실라를 보냅니다. 두 사람은 이 편지에 적힌 내용을 직접 말로도 확인하여 줄 것입니다. 28다음과 같이 꼭 필요한 것 몇 가지 말고는 여러분에게 짐을 지우지 않는 것이, 성령*께도 우리에게도 좋을 것 같았습니다. 29여러분은 우상에게 바친 음식과 피와 목 졸라 죽인 짐승의 고기를 먹지 마십시오. 그리고 부도덕한 성 관계를 갖지 마십시오. 여러분이 이런 일들을 멀리하시면 아주 잘 하시는 것입니다. 안녕히 계십시오. 30그들은 보냄을 받고 안디옥으로 내려가서, 온 회중을 모아 놓고 그 편지를 전해 주었다. 31사람들은 그 편지를 읽고, 용기를 주는 내용에 무척 기뻐하였다. 32예언자*인 유다와 실라는 많은 말로 그들에게 용기를 북돋아 주고 힘을 주었다. 33두 사람은 한동안 그곳에서 지낸 뒤에, 형제들에게서 평안히 가라는 인사를 받고 자기들을 보낸 사람들에게로돌아갔다. 34* 35바울과 바나바는 안디옥에 한동안 머물렀다. 두 사람은 다른 많은 사람들과 함께 주의 말씀을 가르치고 전하였다.
바울과 바나바가 갈라서다 36얼마쯤 지난 뒤에 바울이 바나바에게 말하였다. “우리가 주의 말씀을 전한 모든 도시에 살고 있는 형제들을 다시 찾아가서 그들이 어떻게 지내고 있는지 살펴봅시다.” 37그런데 바나바는 마가라고 하는 요한을 데리고 가고 싶어하였다. 38그러나 바울은 그 사람이 밤빌리아에서 자기들을 버리고 떠나 계속 함께 일하지 않았기 때문에 데리고 가지 않는 것이 좋다고 생각하였다. 39이 일을 두고 두 사람이 심하게 다툰 끝에, 결국 두 사람은 서로 갈라서게 되었다. 바나바는 마가를 데리고 배를 타고 키프로스로 갔다. 40바울은 실라를 데리고 떠났다. 믿는 이들은 하나님께서 그들을 보살펴 주시기를 빌며 두 사람을 보냈다. 41바울은 시리아와 길리기아를 거쳐 가면서, 그곳에 있는 교회들을 튼튼하게 해 주었다. |
