1Then Pilate ordered that Jesus be taken away and whipped. 2The soldiers made a crown from thorny branches and put it on his head. Then they put a purple robe around him. 3They kept coming up to him and saying, “Hail to the king of the Jews!” And they hit him in the face. 4Again Pilate came out and said to the Jewish leaders, “Look! I am bringing Jesus out to you. I want you to know that I find nothing I can charge him with.” 5Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to the Jews, “Here is the man!” 6When the leading priests and the Jewish guards saw Jesus they shouted, “Kill him on a cross! Kill him on a cross!”
But Pilate answered, “You take him and nail him to a cross yourselves. I find nothing I can charge him with.” 7The Jewish leaders answered, “We have a law that says he must die, because he said he is the Son of God.” 8When Pilate heard this, he was more afraid. 9So he went back inside the palace and asked Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus did not answer him. 10Pilate said, “You refuse to speak to me? Remember, I have the power to make you free or to kill you on a cross.” 11Jesus answered, “The only power you have over me is the power given to you by God. So the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.” 12After this, Pilate tried to let Jesus go free. But the Jewish leaders shouted, “Anyone who makes himself a king is against Caesar*. So if you let this man go free, that means you are not Caesar’s friend.” 13When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out to the place called “The Stone Pavement.” (In Aramaic* the name is Gabbatha.) Pilate sat down on the judge’s seat there. 14It was now almost noon on Preparation day* of Passover week. Pilate said to the Jews, “Here is your king!” 15They shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Kill him on a cross!”
Pilate asked them, “Do you want me to kill your king on a cross?”
The leading priests answered, “The only king we have is Caesar!” 16So Pilate handed Jesus over to them to be killed on a cross.
Jesus Is Nailed to a Cross (Mt. 27:32-44; Mk. 15:21-32; Lk. 23:26-39) The soldiers took Jesus. 17He carried his own cross to a place called “The Place of the Skull.” (In Aramaic* the name of this place is “Golgotha.”) 18There they nailed Jesus to the cross. They also nailed two other men to crosses. They put them on each side of Jesus with him in the middle. 19Pilate* told them to write a sign and put it on the cross. The sign said, “jesus of nazareth, the king of the jews.” 20The sign was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. Many of the Jews read this sign, because the place where Jesus was nailed to the cross was near the city. 21The leading Jewish priests said to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The King of the Jews.’ But write, ‘This man said, I am the King of the Jews.’” 22Pilate answered, “I will not change what I have written.” 23After the soldiers nailed Jesus to the cross, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts. Each soldier got one part. They also took his tunic*. It was all one piece of cloth woven from top to bottom. 24So the soldiers said to each other, “We should not tear this into parts. Let’s throw lots* to see who will get it.” This happened to make clear the full meaning of what the Scriptures* say:
“They divided my clothes among them, and they threw lots for what I was wearing.”* So the soldiers did this. 25Jesus’ mother stood near his cross. Her sister was also standing there with Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26Jesus saw his mother. He also saw the follower he loved very much standing there. He said to his mother, “Dear woman, here is your son.” 27Then he said to the follower, “Here is your mother.” So after that, this follower took Jesus’ mother to live in his home.
Jesus Dies (Mt. 27:45-56; Mk. 15:33-41; Lk. 23:44-49) 28Later, Jesus knew that everything had been done. To make the Scriptures* come true he said, “I am thirsty.”* 29There was a jar full of sour wine there, so the soldiers soaked a sponge in it. They put the sponge on a branch of a hyssop plant and lifted it to Jesus’ mouth. 30When he tasted the wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and died. 31This day was Preparation day*. The next day was a special Sabbath* day. The Jewish leaders did not want the bodies to stay on the cross on the Sabbath day. So they asked Pilate* to order that the legs of the men be broken. And they asked that the bodies be taken down from the crosses. 32So the soldiers came and broke the legs* of the two men on the crosses beside Jesus. 33But when the soldiers came close to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead. So they did not break his legs. 34But one of the soldiers stuck his spear into Jesus’ side. Immediately blood and water came out. 35(The one who saw this happen has told about it. He told about it so that you also can believe. The things he says are true. He knows that he tells the truth.) 36These things happened to give full meaning to the Scriptures that said, “None of his bones will be broken”* 37and “People will look at the one they stabbed.”*
Jesus Is Buried (Mt. 27:57-61; Mk. 15:42-47; Lk. 23:50-56) 38Later, a man named Joseph from Arimathea asked Pilate* for the body of Jesus. (Joseph was a follower of Jesus, but he did not tell anyone, because he was afraid of the Jewish leaders.) Pilate said Joseph could take Jesus’ body, so he came and took it away. 39Nicodemus went with Joseph. He was the man who had come to Jesus before and talked to him at night. He brought about 100 pounds* of spices - a mixture of myrrh* and aloes*. 40These two men took Jesus’ body and wrapped it in pieces of linen cloth with the spices. (This is how the Jews bury people.) 41In the place where Jesus was killed on the cross, there was a garden. In the garden there was a new tomb*. No one had ever been buried there before. 42The men put Jesus in that tomb because it was near, and the Jews were preparing to start their Sabbath* day. |

1그러자 빌라도는 예수를 데려다가 채찍으로 때렸다. 2군인들은 가시나무로 왕관을 엮어서 예수의 머리에 씌웠다. 그리고 예수께 자색 옷을 입히고, 3거듭거듭 그분께 다가가 “유대 사람들의 왕, 만세!” 하고 말하였다. 그리고 그분의 얼굴을 때렸다. 4다시 한 번 빌라도가 밖으로 나와서 유대 사람들에게 말하였다. “보시오, 내가 그를 당신들 앞으로 데리고 나오겠소. 그를 고소할 근거를 하나도 찾지 못하였다는 것을 당신들에게 알리려는 것이오.” 5예수께서 가시나무 왕관을 쓰고 자색 겉옷을 입고 나오시자, 빌라도가 유대 사람들에게 말하였다. “자, 여기 그 사람이 있소!” 6높은 제사장들과 그들의 경비병들은 그분을 보자마자 소리쳤다. “십자가에 못 박으시오! 십자가에 못 박으시오!”
그러나 빌라도는 이렇게 대답하였다. “당신들이 그를 데려다가 직접 십자가에 못 박으시오. 나는 이 사람을 고소할 아무런 근거도 찾지 못하였소.” 7유대 사람들이 그에게 대답하였다. “우리에게도 법이 있습니다. 그 법에 따르면 그는 죽어 마땅합니다. 자기가 하나님의 아들이라고 주장했기 때문입니다.” 8빌라도는 이 말을 듣고 더더욱 두려워졌다. 9그는 관저 안으로 다시 들어가서 예수께 물었다. “당신은 어디서 왔소?” 그러나 예수께서는 잠자코 계셨다. 10빌라도가 말하였다. “내게 말하기를 거부할 작정이오? 내게는 당신을 풀어 줄 권한도 있고 십자가에 못 박을 권한도 있다는 것을 모르시오?” 11예수께서 대답하셨다. “하나님께서 주시지 않았더라면*, 당신에게는 나를 해칠 아무런 권한도 없었을 것이오. 그러니 나를 당신에게 넘겨준 사람(대제사장)의 죄가 더 크오.” 12그때부터 빌라도는 예수를 풀어 주려고 애썼다. 그러나 유대 사람들은 계속 소리를 질렀다. “누구든지 자기를 가리켜 왕이라고 하는 사람은 시저에게 대항하는 사람입니다. 그러니 이 사람을 풀어 주면, 총독께서는 시저에게 불충하는 것입니다.” 13빌라도는 이 말을 듣고 예수를 데리고 나와서, 리토스트로토스라는 곳에 있는 재판관 자리에 앉았다. (리토스트로토스는 아람 말로 가바다인데, ‘돌을 깔아 놓은 곳’이라는 뜻이다.) 14이 날은 유월절*을 준비하는 날이었고, 때는 정오 무렵이었다.
빌라도가 유대 사람들에게 말하였다. “자, 여기 여러분의 왕이 있소!” 15그러나 그들은 “그 자를 없애 버리시오! 없애 버리시오! 그 자를 십자가에 못 박으시오!”라고 소리쳤다.
빌라도가 물었다. “여러분의 왕을 십자가에 못 박으란 말이오?”
높은 제사장들이 대답하였다. “우리의 왕은 시저* 한 분뿐이십니다!” 16마침내 빌라도는 유대 사람들의 비위를 맞추려고, 예수를 십자가에 못 박으라고 그들에게 넘겨주었다.
십자가에 못 박히시다 (마 27:32-44; 막 15:21-32; 눅 23:26-39) 로마 군인들이 예수를 넘겨받았다. 17예수께서는 자신의 십자가를 지고 ‘해골’이라는 곳으로 가셨다. (아람 말*로는 이곳을 골고다라고 한다.) 18이곳에서 그들은 예수를 십자가에 못 박았다. 그리고 다른 두 사람도 십자가에 못 박았는데, 예수를 가운데 두고 양쪽에 하나씩 세워 놓았다. 19빌라도가 팻말을 준비하여 십자가 위에 붙였다. 거기에는 ‘나사렛 사람 예수, 유대 사람의 왕’이라고 쓰여 있었다. 20많은 유대 사람이 그 팻말을 읽었다. 그곳이 예루살렘 성에 가까웠고, 팻말이 아람 말과 라틴 말* 과 그리스 말로 쓰여 있었기 때문이다. 21유대 사람의 높은 제사장들이 빌라도에게 말하였다. “‘유대 사람의 왕’ 이라고 쓰지 말고, ‘이 자는 스스로 유대 사람의 왕이라고 하였다.’라고 쓰십시오.” 22빌라도가 대답하였다. “한번 썼으면 그만이다.” 23군인들이 예수를 십자가에 못 박은 뒤에, 예수의 옷을 가져다가 네 몫으로 나누어서 한 사람이 한 몫씩 차지하였다. 그러나 속옷은 솔기 없이 위에서부터 아래까지 통으로 짠 것이었다. 24그래서 그들이 서로에게 말하였다. “이 옷은 찢지 말고, 제비를 뽑아서 가질 사람을 정하자.” 이것은
“그들이 내 겉옷을 나누어 가지고 내 옷을 놓고 제비를 뽑았다.”시 22:18
라는 성경* 말씀이 이루어지게 하려는 것이었다. 군인들이 바로 그렇게 하였다. 25예수의 십자가 가까이에 그분의 어머니가 서 계셨다. 예수의 이모와, 글로바의 아내 마리아와, 막달라 여자 마리아도 거기에 서 있었다. 26예수께서는 당신의 어머니와 그 곁에 있는 당신의 사랑하는 제자를 보시고 어머니에게 말씀하셨다. “어머님, 이 사람이 어머님의 아들입니다.” 27그리고 제자에게는 “여기 이분이 네 어머님이시다.”라고 말씀하셨다. 이때부터 그 제자는 그분을 자기 집에 모셨다.
예수께서 숨을 거두시다 (마 27:45-56; 막 15:33-41; 눅 23:44-49) 28그 뒤에 예수께서는 이제 모든 일이 이루어진 것을 아시고, 성경* 말씀을 이루시려고 “목마르다.*”라고 말씀하셨다. 29마침 그곳에 신 포도주가 가득 든 항아리가 있었다. 사람들은 갯솜*에 그 신 포도주를 듬뿍 적셔 히솝 풀* 대에 꿰어 예수의 입에 갖다 대었다. 30예수께서 신 포도주를 드시고 난 다음에, “다 이루었다.”라고 말씀하셨다. 그리고 고개를 떨구시고 숨을 거두셨다. 31그날이 금요일이었다. 유대 사람들은 그 다음 날인 안식일*에 주검을 십자가에 그대로 두고 싶지 않았다. 그 안식일*은 특별히 엄숙하게 지켜야 할 안식일*이었다. 그래서 빌라도에게, 십자가에 달린 사람들의 다리를 꺾어 빨리 죽게 한 다음, 그들의 주검을 치우게 해 달라고 청하였다. 32그래서 군인들이 와서 예수와 함께 십자가에 달린 첫째 사람의 다리와 또 다른 사람의 다리를 꺾었다. 33그러나 그들이 예수 앞에 와서는 이미 숨을 거두신 것을 보고, 그분의 다리는 꺾지 않았다. 34그 대신 군인 하나가 예수의 옆구리를 창으로 찔렀다. 그러자 피와 물이 한꺼번에 쏟아졌다. 35(이 일을 본 사람이 증언한다. 그것은 여러분도 믿게 하려는 것이다. 그의 증언은 참되다. 그리고 그는 자기가 참말을 하고 있다는 것을 알고 있다.) 36이 일들이 일어난 것은 “그의 뼈가 하나도 부러지지 않을 것이다.*”라는 성경* 말씀이 이루어지게 하려는 것이었다. 37또 성경의 다른 곳에는 “그들은 자기들이 찌른 사람을 볼 것이다.”라는 말씀도 있다.
예수께서 묻히시다 (마 27:57-61; 막 15:42-47; 눅 23:50-56) 38그 뒤에, 아리마대 사람 요셉이 빌라도에게 가서 예수의 주검을 거두게 해 달라고 청하였다. (요셉은 예수의 제자였다. 그러나 그는 유대 사람들이 무서워서 그 사실을 숨겨 왔다.) 빌라도가 허락하니, 요셉이 가서 예수의 주검을 십자가에서 내렸다. 39니고데모가 요셉과 함께 갔는데, 그는 어느 날 밤에 예수를 찾아간 적이 있는 사람이었다. 니고데모는 몰약과 알로에*를 섞은 것을 백 근쯤* 가져왔다. 40이 두 사람은 예수의 주검을 모셔다가, 유대 사람의 장례 풍속대로 향료를 바르고 고운 베로 감았다. 41예수께서 십자가에 못 박히신 곳에 과수원이 하나 있었다. 이 과수원에는 아무도 묻힌 적이 없는 새 무덤*이 하나 있었다. 42그날은 유대 사람의 안식일*을 준비하는 날이었고, 이 무덤이 가까이 있었으므로 두 사람은 예수의 주검을 그곳에 모셨다. |
