Jesus Comforts His Followers1Jesus said, “Don’t be troubled. Trust in God, and trust in me. 2There are many rooms in my Father’s house. I would not tell you this if it were not true. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3After I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back. Then I will take you with me, so that you can be where I am. 4You know the way to the place where I am going.” 5Thomas said, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” 6Jesus answered, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. The only way to the Father is through me. 7If you really knew me, you would know my Father too. But now you know the Father. You have seen him.” 8Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father. That is all we need.” 9Jesus answered, “Philip, I have been with you for a long time. So you should know me. Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father too. So why do you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The things I have told you don’t come from me. The Father lives in me, and he is doing his own work. 11Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or believe because of the miracles* I have done. 12“I can assure you that whoever believes in me will do the same things I have done. And they will do even greater things than I have done, because I am going to the Father. 13And if you ask for anything in my name, I will do it for you. Then the Father’s glory* will be shown through the Son. 14If you ask me for anything in my name, I will do it.
The Promise of the Holy Spirit 15“If you love me, you will do what I command. 16I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper* to be with you forever. 17The Helper is the Spirit of truth*. The people of the world cannot accept him, because they don’t see him or know him. But you know him. He lives with you, and he will be in you. 18“I will not leave you all alone like orphans. I will come back to you. 19In a very short time the people in the world will not see me anymore. But you will see me. You will live because I live. 20On that day you will know that I am in the Father. You will know that you are in me and I am in you. 21Those who really love me are the ones who not only know my commands but also obey them. My Father will love such people, and I will love them. I will make myself known to them.” 22Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “Lord, how will you make yourself known to us, but not to the world?” 23Jesus answered, “All who love me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them. My Father and I will come to them and live with them. 24But anyone who does not love me does not obey my teaching. This teaching that you hear is not really mine. It is from my Father who sent me. 25“I have told you all these things while I am with you. 26But the Helper will teach you everything and cause you to remember all that I told you. This Helper is the Holy Spirit* that the Father will send in my name. 27“I leave you peace. It is my own peace I give you. I give you peace in a different way than the world does. So don’t be troubled. Don’t be afraid. 28You heard me say to you, ‘I am leaving, but I will come back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be happy that I am going back to the Father, because the Father is greater than I am. 29I have told you this now, before it happens. Then when it happens, you will believe. 30“I will not talk with you much longer. The ruler of this world* is coming. He has no power over me. 31But the world must know that I love the Father. So I do exactly what the Father told me to do. “Come now, let’s go.” |

제자들을 위로하시다 1너희는 걱정하지 말아라. 하나님을 믿고, 또 나를 믿어라. 2내 아버지의 집에는 있을 곳이 많다. 만일 그렇지 않다면, 내가 이미 너희에게 일러 주었을 것이다. 나는 너희가 있을 곳을 마련해 놓으려고 간다. 3내가 가서 너희가 있을 곳을 마련하면, 다시 너희에게 돌아오겠다. 그리고 너희를 데리고 가서, 너희도 내가 있는 곳에 함께 있게 하겠다. 4너희는 내가 가는 곳에 이르는 길을 알고 있다.” 5도마가 예수께 말하였다. “주님, 저희는 주께서 가시는 곳을 모릅니다. 그런데 어떻게 그 길을 알겠습니까?” 6예수께서 대답하셨다. “내가 곧 그 길이요 진리요 생명이다. 어느 누구도 나를 거치지 않고는 아버지께 올 수 없다. 7너희가 나를 알았더라면 내 아버지도 알았을 것이다. 이제부터는 너희가 아버지를 알고 있다. 너희는 그분을 이미 뵈었다.” 8빌립이 말하였다. “주님, 저희에게 아버지를 보여 주시면 참 좋겠습니다.” 9예수께서 말씀하셨다. “빌립아, 내가 오랫동안 너희와 함께 있었다. 그런데도 네가 나를 모르겠느냐? 누구든지 나를 본 사람은 아버지도 뵈었다. 그런데 어찌하여 ‘아버지를 보여 주십시오.’ 하느냐? 10내가 아버지 안에 있고 아버지께서 내 안에 계시다는 것을 네가 믿지 않느냐? 내가 너희에게 하는 말도 내 마음대로 하는 것이 아니다. 내 안에 계시는 아버지께서 나를 통하여 하시는 일이다. 11나는 아버지 안에 있고 아버지는 내 안에 계신다고 하는 내 말을 믿어라. 내 말을 믿지 못하겠거든, 아버지께서 나를 통하여 하시는 일들을 보고 믿어라. 12내가 진정으로 너희에게 말한다. 누구든지 나를 믿는 사람은 내가 해 온 일을 할 것이다. 그는 내가 한 것보다 더 큰 일을 할 것이니, 그것은 내가 아버지께 가기 때문이다. 13너희가 내 이름으로 무엇을 구하든지, 내가 다 이루어 주겠다. 그것은 아들로 말미암아 아버지께서 영광을 받으시게 하려는 것이다. 14너희가 무엇이든지 내 이름으로* 구하면, 내가 다 이루어 주겠다.
성령에 관한 약속 15너희가 나를 사랑하면 내 계명을 지킬 것이다. 16내가 아버지께 구하면, 아버지께서 나를 대신하여 너희를 도와주실 성령*을 보내실 것이다. 그러면 그분이 너희와 영원히 함께 계실 것이다. 17그분은 진리를 알려 주는 영이시다. 세상은 그분을 보지도 못하고 알지도 못하기 때문에 그분을 받아들일 수 없다. 그러나 너희는 그분을 안다. 그분은 지금도 너희와 함께 살고 계시며, 앞으로도 너희 안에 계실 것이기 때문이다. 18나는 너희를 고아처럼 버려 두지 않고, 너희에게 다시 오겠다. 19조금 있으면 세상은 나를 더는 보지 못할 것이다. 그러나 너희는 나를 볼 것이다. 내가 살아 있으므로 너희 또한 살 것이다. 20그날에 너희는 내가 내 아버지 안에 있고, 너희는 내 안에 있으며, 나는 너희 안에 있다는 것을 깨달을 것이다. 21누구든지 내 계명을 받아서 그 계명에 순종하면, 바로 그 사람이 나를 사랑하는 사람이다. 나를 사랑하는 그 사람을 내 아버지께서도 사랑하실 것이다. 그리고 나도 그 사람을 사랑하고, 그에게 나를 나타내 보일 것이다.” 22그때에 가리옷 유다가 아닌 다른 유다가 말하였다. “그러나, 주님, 어찌하여 우리에게는 주님을 나타내려 하시면서, 세상 사람들에게는 나타내려 하지 않으십니까?” 23예수께서 대답하셨다. “누구든지 나를 사랑하면 내 가르침에 순종할 것이다. 내 아버지께서는 그를 사랑하실 것이다. 그리고 아버지와 나는 그에게 가서 그와 함께 살 것이다. 24그러나 나를 사랑하지 않는 사람은 내 가르침에 순종하지 않을 것이다. 너희가 듣는 이 말은 내 말이 아니라, 나를 보내신 아버지의 말씀이다. 25내가 너희와 함께 있는 동안에 이 모든 것을 너희에게 가르쳤다. 26이제 내 아버지께서 내 대신으로 성령*님을 보내 주실 것이다. 그러면 그분께서 너희에게 모든 것을 가르쳐 주실 뿐만 아니라, 내가 너희에게 말한 것을 하나하나 일깨워 주실 것이다. 27나는 너희에게 평화를 남겨 준다. 내 평화를 너희에게 주는 것이다. 내가 주는 평화는 세상이 주는 평화와 다르다. 그러니 걱정하지 말고 두려워하지 말아라. 28너희는 ‘내가 가지만 다시 너희에게 돌아오겠다.’라는 내 말을 들었다. 너희가 나를 사랑한다면, 내가 아버지께 돌아가는 것을 기뻐할 것이다. 아버지께서는 나보다 훨씬 위대하신 분이기 때문이다. 29나는 이 일이 일어나기 전에 미리 너희에게 말한다. 그렇게 해서 그 일이 일어날 때에 너희가 믿게 하려는 것이다. 30내가 너희와 이야기할 시간은 이제 얼마 남지 않았다. 이 세상을 다스리는 자(사탄)가 오고 있다. 그에게는 나를 다스릴 권한이 없다. 31그러나 내가 아버지를 사랑하고, 또한 아버지께서 시키시는 대로 한다는 것을 세상이 알아야 한다.
자, 이제 여기를 떠나자.” |
