1 1Greetings from Peter, an apostlea of Jesus Christ. ve become a judge. To God's chosen people who are away from their homes - people scattered all over the areas of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia. 2God planned long ago to choose you and to make you his holy peopleb, which is the Spirit'sc work. God wanted you to obey him and to be made clean by the blood sacrificed of Jesus Christ. ve become a judge. I pray that you will enjoy more and more of God's gracee and peace.5God's power protects you through your faith, and it keeps you safe until your salvation comes. That salvation is ready to be given to you at the end of time. 6I know the thought of that is exciting, even if you must suffer through different kinds of troubles for a short time now. 7These troubles test your faith and prove that it is pure. And such faith is worth more than gold. Gold can be proved to be pure by fire, but gold will ruin. When your faith is proven to be pure, the result will be praise and gloryf and honor when Jesus Christ comes. 8You have not seen Christ, but still you love him. You can't see him now, but you believe in him. You are filled with a wonderful and heavenly joy that cannot be explained. 9Your faith has a goal, and you are reaching that goal - your salvation. 10The prophetsg studied carefully and tried to learn about this salvation. They spoke about the gracee that was coming to you. 11The Spiritc of Christ was in those prophets. And the Spirit was telling about the sufferings that would happen to Christ and about the glory that would come after those sufferings. The prophets tried to learn about what the Spirit was showing them - when it would happen and what the world would be like at that time. 12It was made clear to them that their service was not for themselves. They were serving you when they told about the things you have now heard. You heard them from those who told you the Good Newsh with the help of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even the angels would like very much to know more about these things you were told. 17You pray to God and call him Father, but he will judge everyone the same way - by what they do. So while you are visiting here on earth, you should live with respect for God. 18You know that in the past the way you were living was useless. It was a way of life you learned from those who lived before you. But you were saved from that way of living. You were bought, but not with things that ruin like gold or silver. 19You were bought with the precious blood of Christ's death. He was a pure and perfect sacrificial Lambl. 20Christ was chosen before the world was made, but he was shown to the world in these last times for you. 21You believe in God through Christ. God is the one who raised him from death and gave honor to him. So your faith and your hope are in God. 22You have made yourselves pure by obeying the truth. Now you can have true love for your brothers and sisters. So love each other deeply - with all your heart. 23You have been born again. This new life did not come from something that dies. It came from something that cannot die. You were born again through God's life-giving messagem that lasts forever. 24The Scriptures say,
aapostle A follower of Jesus chosen to represent him in a special way. During his earthly ministry, Jesus named twelve men as apostles. They had the specific responsibility and authority to represent him and proclaim his message throughout the world. Later, he appeared to Paul and gave him a similar commission, especially to non-Jewish people. Barnabas, Paul¡¯s missionary companion, and James, the brother of Jesus, are also called apostles, as well as several others in the New Testament. Some of these occurrences of the word, however, have the more general sense of ¡°messenger¡± or ¡°representative.¡± bholy people Literally, ¡°saints¡± or ¡°holy ones,¡± a term used in the New Testament to describe followers of Jesus Christ as God¡¯s special people. They are holy because they have been made pure through Christ and belong only to God. See ¡°holy.¡± cSpirit See ¡°Holy Spirit.¡± d1:2 made clean ¡¦ sacrifice Or ¡°sprinkled with the blood,¡± which probably compares the beginning of the new agreement by the blood sacrifice of Christ (Mk. 14:24) with Moses¡¯ sprinkling the blood of animal sacrifices on the people of Israel to seal the agreement God made with them (Ex. 24:3-8). See also Heb. 9:15-26. egrace The love and kindness that God shows in his complete willingness to give people favors he does not owe them and blessings they don¡¯t deserve. fglory A word that refers to the special qualities of God. Often it means brightness, referring to the way he appears to people. Sometimes it means majesty or power, referring to a kind of greatness that cannot be compared to anything in human experience. It can also include the ideas of wealth, honor, fame, or respect, especially in expressions of praise. gprophet A person who speaks a message from God. Many of the books in the Old Testament are messages spoken or written by ¡°the prophets,¡± who were some of those God chose to speak for him. God often used dreams or visions to tell or show his prophets what they should say. hGood News In the Gospels this is usually the news about the coming of God¡¯s kingdom (see above) or its representative Jesus the Messiah. In other places it is, more specifically, the news or message of God¡¯s grace - that he has made a way through Jesus Christ for people to be made right with him and enjoy his blessings now and forever. iholy When referring to people or things, holy means set apart or chosen for a special use; especially, belonging to God or used only for him. It can also mean pure or perfect, worthy of God and fit for his service. When God is called holy, in addition to the idea of pure and perfect, it often means he is completely separate or different from and above everything else that exists. In the New Testament God¡¯s people are holy because they have been made perfect and pure through Christ and, with the help of the Holy Spirit, keep themselves away from sin and live only for God. jScripture Part of the Scriptures or ¡°Holy Writings¡± - the Old Testament. k1:16 Quote from Lev. 11:44, 45; 19:2; 20:7. lLamb A symbolic name for Jesus Christ. It means that he was an offering for sin like the lambs that were offered as a sacrifice to God in the Old Testament. mmessage See ¡°Good News.¡± nIsaiah 40:6-8 |
