1 1The Good Newsa about Jesus the Messiahb, the Son of Godc, begins 2with what the prophetd Isaiah said would happen. He wrote:
6John wore clothes made from camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist. He ate locustsi and wild honey. 7This is what John told the people: "There is someone coming later who is able to do more than I can. I am not good enough to be the slave who stoops down to untie his sandals. 8I baptize you with water, but the one who is coming will baptize you with the Holy Spiritj." 19Jesus continued walking by Lake Galilee. He saw two more brothers, James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They were in their boat, preparing their nets to catch fish. 20Their father Zebedee and the men who worked for him were in the boat with the brothers. When Jesus saw the brothers, he told them to come. They left their father and followed Jesus. 25Jesus, his voice full of warning, said, "Be quiet, and come out of him!" 26The evil spirit made the man shake. Then the spirit made a loud noise and came out of him. 27The people were amazed. They asked each other, "What is happening here? This man is teaching something new, and he teaches with authority! He even commands evil spirits, and they obey him." 28So the news about Jesus spread quickly everywhere in the area of Galilee. 32That night, after the sun went down, the people brought to Jesus many who were sick. They also brought those who had demonss inside them. 33Everyone in the town gathered at the door of that house. 34Jesus healed many of those who had different kinds of sicknesses. He also forced many demons out of people. But he would not allow the demons to speak, because they knew who he wast. 38Jesus answered, "We should go to another place. We can go to other towns around here, and I can tell God's message to those people too. That is why I came." 39So Jesus traveled everywhere in Galilee. He spoke in the synagoguesr, and he forced demonss out of people. 41These last words made Jesus angryv. But he touched him and said, "I want to heal you. Be healed!" 42Immediately the leprosy disappeared, and the man was healed. 43Jesus told the man to go, but he gave him a strong warning: 44"Don't tell anyone about what I did for you. But go and let the priest look at youw. And offer a gift to God because you have been healed. Offer the gift that Mosesx commandedy. This will show everyone that you are healed." 45The man left there and told everyone he saw that Jesus had healed him. So the news about Jesus spread. And that is why he could not enter a town if people saw him. He stayed in places where people did not live. But people came from all the towns to the places where he was. aGood News In the Gospels this is usually the news about the coming of God¡¯s kingdom (see above) or its representative Jesus the Messiah. In other places it is, more specifically, the news or message of God¡¯s grace - that he has made a way through Jesus Christ for people to be made right with him and enjoy his blessings now and forever. bMessiah A Hebrew word that has the same meaning as the Greek word Christ (see ¡°Christ¡±). It was a title for the kings of God¡¯s people in the Old Testament and for the special king God promised to send as a ¡°savior¡± to defeat evil and establish the reign of God. Many prophets made it clear that this new kingdom would be eternal; that is, not only would the promised Messiah bring about a time of justice and right living among God¡¯s people here on earth, but also his kingdom would extend beyond this world to life forever with God. However, most Jews of the first century expected the Messiah to be a political ruler here on earth who would defeat the other nations and return the nation of Israel to a position of great glory and power. But God intended his Messiah to establish a new ¡°Israel,¡± an eternal kingdom that would bless all the nations. c1:1 the Son of God Some Greek copies do not have these words. dprophet A person who speaks a message from God. Many of the books in the Old Testament are messages spoken or written by ¡°the prophets,¡± who were some of those God chose to speak for him. God often used dreams or visions to tell or show his prophets what they should say. eMalachi 3:1 fIsaiah 40:3 gJohn the Baptizer The man God chose to tell people about Christ¡¯s coming and to prepare them by warning them to change their lives and by baptizing them (see ¡°baptize¡±) as a sign of their decision to change. Read Mt. 3; Mk. 1:1-11; Lk. 1:5-25, 57-80; 3:1-18. hbaptize To perform the act of baptism. See ¡°baptism.¡± ilocusts Insects like grasshoppers that could destroy a large crop very quickly. See Ex. 10. The Law of Moses said that locusts could be eaten. See Lev. 11:21-22. jHoly Spirit Also called the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Christ, and the Comforter. In union with God and Christ, he does God¡¯s work among people in the world. kSpirit See ¡°Holy Spirit.¡± lSatan A name for the devil meaning ¡°the enemy,¡± or ¡°the accuser.¡± mGod¡¯s kingdom The ¡°reign¡± or ¡°rule¡± of God over all people who submit to him by accepting Jesus as the Messiah (the appointed king), who represents God¡¯s kingdom on earth. Jesus was the perfect example of submission to the will of God. When people give control of their lives to Jesus, they become part of God¡¯s kingdom and begin to enjoy the blessings he has promised his people from the beginning. (Note that in Matthew this term also translates the Greek word ¡°kingdom¡± by itself or the phrase, ¡°the kingdom of the heavens,¡± which was used by Jews as a way to avoid saying the divine name.) n1:15 is very near Or ¡°is coming soon¡± or ¡°has come.¡± o1:16 Simon Simon¡¯s other name was Peter.
