The Birth of Jesus Christ (Mt. 1:18-25)1It was about that same time that Augustus Caesar* sent out an order to all people in the countries that were under Roman rule. The order said that everyone’s name must be put on a list. 2This was the first counting of all the people while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3Everyone traveled to their own hometowns to have their name put on the list. 4So Joseph left Nazareth, a town in Galilee, and went to the town of Bethlehem in Judea. It was known as the town of David*. Joseph went there because he was from the family of David*. 5Joseph registered with Mary because she was engaged to marry him. (She was now pregnant.) 6While Joseph and Mary were in Bethlehem, the time came for her to have the baby. 7She gave birth to her first son. She wrapped him up well and laid him in a box where cattle are fed. She put him there because the guest room was full.
Some Shepherds Hear About Jesus 8That night, some shepherds were out in the fields near Bethlehem watching their sheep. 9An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory* of the Lord was shining around them. The shepherds were very afraid. 10The angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid. I have some very good news for you - news that will make everyone happy. 11Today your Savior was born in David’s town. He is the Messiah*, the Lord. 12This is how you will know him: You will find a baby wrapped in pieces of cloth and lying in a feeding box.” 13Then a huge army of angels from heaven joined the first angel, and they were all praising God, saying, 14“Praise God in heaven, and on earth let there be peace to the people who please him.” 15The angels left the shepherds and went back to heaven. The shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this great event the Lord has told us about.” 16So they went running and found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the feeding box. 17When they saw the baby, they told what the angels said about this child. 18Everyone was surprised when they heard what the shepherds told them. 19Mary continued to think about these things, trying to understand them. 20The shepherds went back to their sheep, praising God and thanking him for everything they had seen and heard. It was just as the angel had told them. 21When the baby was eight days old, he was circumcised*, and he was named Jesus. This name was given by the angel before the baby began to grow inside Mary.
Jesus Is Presented in the Temple 22The time came for Mary and Joseph to do the things the Law of Moses* taught about being made pure. They brought Jesus to Jerusalem so that they could present him to the Lord. 23It is written in the law of the Lord: “When a mother’s first baby is a boy, he shall be called ‘special for the Lord*.’” 24The law of the Lord also says that people must give a sacrifice*: “You must sacrifice two doves or two young pigeons.”* So Joseph and Mary went to Jerusalem to do this.
Simeon Sees Jesus 25A man named Simeon lived in Jerusalem. He was a good man who was devoted to God. He was waiting for the time when God would come to help Israel*. The Holy Spirit* was with him. 26The Holy Spirit told him that he would not die before he saw the Messiah* from the Lord. 27The Spirit led Simeon to the Temple*. So he was there when Mary and Joseph brought the baby Jesus to do what the Jewish law said they must do. 28Simeon took the baby in his arms and thanked God: 29“Now, Lord, you can let me, your servant, die in peace as you said. 30I have seen with my own eyes how you will save your people. 31Now all people can see your plan. 32He is a light to show your way to the other nations. And he will bring honor to your people Israel.” 33Jesus’ father and mother were amazed at what Simeon said about him. 34Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, “Many Jews will fall and many will rise because of this boy. He will be a sign from God that some will not accept. 35So the secret thoughts of many will be made known. And the things that happen will be painful for you - like a sword cutting through your heart.”
Anna Sees Jesus 36Anna, a prophetess*, was there at the Temple*. She was from the family of Phanuel in the tribe of Asher. She was now very old. She had lived with her husband seven years 37before he died and left her alone. She was now 84 years old. Anna was always at the Temple; she never left. She worshiped God by fasting* and praying day and night. 38Anna was there when Joseph and Mary came to the Temple. She praised God and talked about Jesus to all those who were waiting for God to free Jerusalem.
Joseph and Mary Return Home 39Joseph and Mary finished doing all the things that the law of the Lord commanded. Then they went home to Nazareth, their own town in Galilee. 40The little boy Jesus was developing into a mature young man, full of wisdom. God was blessing him.
Jesus as a Boy 41Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Passover* festival. 42When Jesus was twelve years old, they went to the festival as usual. 43When the festival was over, they went home, but Jesus stayed in Jerusalem. His parents did not know about it. 44They traveled for a whole day thinking that Jesus was with them in the group. They began looking for him among their family and close friends, 45but they did not find him. So they went back to Jerusalem to look for him there. 46After three days they found him. Jesus was sitting in the Temple* area with the religious teachers, listening and asking them questions. 47Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and wise answers. 48When his parents saw him, they wondered how this was possible. And his mother said, “Son, why did you do this to us? Your father and I were very worried about you. We have been looking for you.” 49Jesus said to them, “Why did you have to look for me? You should have known that I must be where my Father’s work is*.” 50But they did not understand the meaning of what he said to them. 51Jesus went with them to Nazareth and obeyed them. His mother was still thinking about all these things. 52As Jesus grew taller, he continued to grow in wisdom. God was pleased with him and so were the people who knew him. |

예수의 탄생 (마 1:18-25) 1그 무렵 아우구스투스 황제*는 로마가 다스리는 땅에 사는 모든 사람에게 호적 등록* 을 하라는 명령을 내렸다. 2그것이 첫번째 호적 등록이었다. 구레뇨가 시리아의 총독으로 있을 때의 일이었다. 3사람들은 모두 자기 고향으로 가서 호적에 이름을 올렸다. 4요셉도 살고 있던 갈릴리 지방의 나사렛 마을을 떠나, 유대 지방에 있는 다윗의 고향으로 갔다. 그 마을의 이름은 베들레헴이었다. 요셉은 다윗 가문에서 태어났기 때문에 베들레헴으로 간 것이다. 5요셉은 마리아와 함께 이름을 등록하였다. 마리아는 요셉과 약혼한 처녀였다. 그때 마리아는 임신 중이었다. 6요셉과 마리아가 베들레헴에 있는 동안에 아기를 낳을 때가 되었다. 7마리아는 첫아들(예수)을 낳아, 포대기에 싸서 구유*에 뉘었다. 여관에는 그들이 들 방이* 없었기 때문이다.
몇몇 목자들이 예수의 탄생 소식을 듣다 8가까운 들판에서는 목자들이 밤새 양 떼를 지키고 있었다. 9그때 주님의 천사가 나타났고, 주님의 영광이 목자들을 둘러쌌다. 그들은 겁이 났다. 10천사가 말하였다. “무서워하지 말아라. 나는 사람들이 모두 기뻐할 좋은 소식을 알려 주러 왔다. 11오늘 다윗 마을에 너희를 위하여 구세주가 나셨으니, 그분이 주 그리스도*이시다. 12너희는 포대기에 싸여 구유에 누인 아기를 보게 될 터인데, 그것이 그분을 알아보는 표시이다.” 13그때 갑자기 하늘에서 큰 천사의 무리가 나타나서 하나님을 찬양하였다. 14”하늘 높이 계시는 하나님께는 영광,
하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 땅 위의 사람들에게는 평화로다.” 15천사들이 목자들을 떠나 하늘나라로 돌아가자, 목자들은 이야기를 나누었다. “베들레헴으로 가자. 가서 주님(하나님)께서 알려 주신 이 일을 직접 알아보자.” 16목자들은 서둘러 길을 떠나서 마리아와 요셉과 구유에 누운 아기를 찾아냈다. 17그들은 아기를 본 뒤에, 이 아기에 관하여 천사들이 자기들에게 일러 준 말을 널리 퍼뜨렸다. 18그 말을 들은 모든 사람이 놀라워하였다. 19그러나 마리아는 들은 이야기를 고이 간직하고 마음속으로 곰곰 되새겼다. 20목자들은 하나님을 찬양하고, 자기들이 듣고 본 일에 대해서 감사하며 두고 온 양 떼에게 돌아갔다. 그들이 듣고 본 것은 천사가 일러 준 그대로였다. 21아기가 태어난 지 여드레째 되는 날, 아기에게 할례*를 베풀고 이름을 예수라고 지었다. 그 이름은 마리아가 아기를 임신하기 전에 천사가 일러 준 이름이었다.
아기 예수의 정결 예식 22모세의 법에 따라 정결 예식*을 치러야 할 날이 되었다. 요셉과 마리아는 아기를 주께 바치려고, 아기를 데리고 예루살렘에 있는 성전으로 갔다. 23주의 법에는 이렇게 쓰여 있었다. “맏이로 태어나는 모든 남자 아이는 주님께 바쳐야 한다.”* 24그리고 주의 법에는 “산비둘기 한 쌍이나, 어린 비둘기 한 쌍을 제물로 바쳐야 한다.”*라고도 쓰여 있었다. 그래서 그들은 제물도 바치려고 성전으로 갔다.
시므온이 아기 예수를 만나다 25그런데 예루살렘에는 시므온이라는 사람이 있었다. 시므온은 의로운 사람일 뿐 아니라 하나님을 두려움으로 섬기는 사람이었다. 그는 하나님께서 이스라엘을 도우러 오실 날을 기다리고 있었다. 그는 성령님이 함께하시는 사람이었다. 26성령께서 이미 시므온에게 말씀하셨다. “너는 주께서 보내실 그리스도*를 만나기 전에는 죽지 않을 것이다.” 27시므온이 성령에 이끌려 성전으로 들어갔다. 그때 마침 요셉과 마리아가 법에 정해진 예식을 치르려고 아기를 데리고 들어왔다. 28시므온은 아기 예수를 팔에 안고 하나님께 감사드렸다. 29”주님, 이제 이 종은 주께서 약속하신 대로 평화롭게 죽을 수 있게 되었습니다. 30제가 주님의 구원*을 보았습니다. 제 눈으로 직접 보았습니다. 31당신께서는 그 구원을 모든 민족이 보는 가운데 준비하셨습니다. 32그 구원은 이방 민족에게는 당신의 길을 보여 주는 빛이고,
당신의 백성 이스라엘에게는 큰 영광을 가져다줄 것입니다.” 33아기의 아버지와 어머니는 시므온이 아기에 관하여 하는 말을 듣고 놀라워하였다. 34시므온은 그들에게 복을 빌어 주고, 아기의 어머니 마리아에게 말하였다. “이 아이 때문에 이스라엘에서 많은 사람이 넘어지기도 하고 일어나기도 할 것입니다. 그리고 많은 사람이 받아들이기를 거부하는 하나님의 표적이 될 것입니다. 35그것은 많은 사람의 속마음이 드러나게 하시려는 것입니다. 그리고 슬픔이 날카로운 칼처럼 당신의 영혼을 꿰뚫을 것입니다.”
안나가 아기 예수를 만나다 36거기에는 안나라는 여자 예언자도 있었다. 안나는 아셀 가문 사람 바누엘의 딸이었다. 안나는 나이가 아주 많았다. 그 여자는 결혼하여 남편과 칠 년을 살고 37남편을 잃었다. 안나는 여든네 살이 되도록 홀어미로 지내면서, 성전을 떠나지 않고 밤낮으로 금식하고 기도하며 하나님을 예배하였다. 38안나는 아기와 부모에게 다가와 하나님께 감사드렸다. 그리고 예루살렘의 해방을 기다리는 모든 사람에게 아기에 관하여 이야기해 주었다.
요셉과 마리아 집으로 돌아가다 39아기의 부모는 주의 법에 정해진 일을 마친 뒤에, 갈릴리에 있는 그들의 마을 나사렛으로 돌아갔다. 40아기는 자라며 튼튼해지고 지혜로 가득 찼다. 그리고 하나님의 은총이 그와 함께하였다.
소년 시절의 예수 41예수의 부모는 해마다 유월절*에는 예루살렘에 갔다. 42예수께서 열두 살이 되던 해에도 그들은 늘 해 오던 대로 예루살렘에 갔다. 43명절 기간이 끝나고 예수의 부모는 집으로 돌아가고 있었지만, 소년 예수는 예루살렘에 남아 있었다. 그러나 그들은 이 사실을 몰랐다. 44그들은 예수가 같이 간 사람들 가운데 있으려니 생각하였다. 그들은 하루가 지난 뒤에야 친척과 친구들 사이에서 예수를 찾기 시작하였다. 45그러나 그를 찾을 수 없게 되자 예루살렘으로 되돌아갔다. 46그들은 사흘 뒤에 성전에서 예수를 찾았다. 예수께서는 선생들과 함께 앉아 이야기를 듣기도 하고 묻기도 하고 있었다. 47그가 하는 말을 들은 사람들은 그가 선생들의 말을 알아듣고 대답하는 것에 놀랐다. 48그의 부모는 예수를 보고 깜짝 놀랐다. 어머니가 예수에게 말하였다. “얘야, 어찌하여 네가 우리에게 이런 짓을 하였느냐? 네 아버지와 나는 몹시 걱정하며 너를 찾았다.” 49그러나 예수께서 그들에게 이렇게 말하였다. “어찌하여 나를 찾으셨습니까? 내가 내 아버지의 집에 있어야 하는 줄을 알지 못하셨습니까?” 50그러나 그의 부모는 그 말이 무슨 뜻인지 몰랐다. 51예수께서는 부모와 함께 나사렛으로 돌아가, 부모의 말을 잘 들으며 살았다. 예수의 어머니는 그 모든 일을 마음속에 새겨 두었다. 52예수께서는 슬기와 키가 자라며, 하나님과 사람에게서 더욱 인정을 받았다. |
