1Jesus went to the Mount of Olives*. 2Early in the morning he went back to the Temple* area. The people all came to him, and he sat and taught them. 3The teachers of the law and the Pharisees* brought a woman they had caught in bed with a man who was not her husband. They forced her to stand in front of the people. 4They said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery*. 5The Law of Moses* commands us to stone to death any such woman. What do you say we should do?” 6They were saying this to trick Jesus. They wanted to catch him saying something wrong so that they could have a charge against him. But Jesus stooped down and started writing on the ground with his finger. 7The Jewish leaders continued to ask him their question. So he stood up and said, “Anyone here who has never sinned should throw the first stone at her.” 8Then Jesus stooped down again and wrote on the ground. 9When they heard this, they began to leave one by one. The older men left first, and then the others. Jesus was left alone with the woman standing there in front of him. 10He looked up again and said to her, “Where did they all go? Did no one judge you guilty?” 11She answered, “No one, sir.”
Then Jesus said, “I don’t judge you either. You can go now, but don’t sin again.”*
Jesus Is the Light of the World 12Later, Jesus talked to the people again. He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never live in darkness*. They will have the light that gives life.” 13But the Pharisees* said to Jesus, “When you talk about yourself, you are the only one to say that these things are true. So we cannot accept what you say.” 14Jesus answered, “Yes, I am saying these things about myself. But people can believe what I say, because I know where I came from. And I know where I am going. But you don’t know where I came from or where I am going. 15You judge me the way people judge other people. I don’t judge anyone. 16But if I judge, my judging is true, because when I judge I am not alone. The Father who sent me is with me. 17Your own law says that when two witnesses say the same thing, you must accept what they say. 18I am one of the witnesses who speaks about myself. And the Father who sent me is my other witness.” 19The people asked, “Where is your father?”
Jesus answered, “You don’t know me or my Father. But if you knew me, you would know my Father too.” 20Jesus said these things while he was teaching in the Temple* area, near the room where the Temple* offerings were kept. But no one arrested him, because the right time for him had not yet come.
Some Jews Don’t Understand Jesus 21Again, Jesus said to the people, “I will leave you. You will look for me, but you will die in your sin. You cannot come where I am going.” 22So the Jewish leaders asked themselves, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he said, ‘You cannot come where I am going’?” 23But Jesus said to them, “You people are from here below, but I am from above. You belong to this world, but I don’t belong to this world. 24I told you that you would die in your sins. Yes, if you don’t believe that I AM*, you will die in your sins.” 25They asked, “Then who are you?”
Jesus answered, “I am what I have told you from the beginning. 26I have much more I could say to judge you. But I tell people only what I have heard from the one who sent me, and he speaks the truth.” 27They did not understand who he was talking about. He was telling them about the Father. 28So he said to them, “You will lift up* the Son of Man*. Then you will know that I AM. You will know that whatever I do is not by my own authority. You will know that I say only what the Father has taught me. 29The one who sent me is with me. I always do what pleases him. So he has not left me alone.” 30While he was saying these things, many people believed in him.
Jesus Talks About Freedom From Sin 31So Jesus said to the Jews who believed in him, “If you continue to accept and obey my teaching, you are really my followers. 32You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” 33They answered, “We are Abraham’s* descendants. And we have never been slaves. So why do you say that we will be free?” 34Jesus said, “The truth is, everyone who sins is a slave - a slave to sin. 35A slave does not stay with a family forever. But a son belongs to the family forever. 36So if the Son makes you free, you are really free. 37I know you are Abraham’s descendants. But you want to kill me, because you don’t want to accept my teaching. 38I am telling you what my Father has shown me. But you do what your father has told you.” 39They said, “Our father is Abraham.”
Jesus said, “If you were really Abraham’s descendants, you would do what Abraham did. 40I am someone who has told you the truth I heard from God. But you are trying to kill me. Abraham did nothing like that. 41So you are doing what your own father did.”
But they said, “We are not like children who never knew who their father was. God is our Father. He is the only Father we have.” 42Jesus said to them, “If God were really your Father, you would love me. I came from God, and now I am here. I did not come by my own authority. God sent me. 43You don’t understand the things I say, because you cannot accept my teaching. 44Your father is the devil. You belong to him. You want to do what he wants. He was a murderer from the beginning. He was always against the truth. There is no truth in him. He is like the lies he tells. Yes, the devil is a liar. He is the father of lies. 45“I am telling you the truth, and that’s why you don’t believe me. 46Can any of you prove that I am guilty of sin? If I tell the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47Whoever belongs to God accepts what he says. But you don’t accept what God says, because you don’t belong to God.”
Jesus Talks About Himself and Abraham 48The Jews there answered, “We say you are a Samaritan*. We say a demon* is making you crazy! Are we not right when we say this?” 49Jesus answered, “I have no demon in me. I give honor to my Father, but you give no honor to me. 50I am not trying to get honor for myself. There is one who wants this honor for me. He is the judge. 51I promise you, whoever continues to obey my teaching will never die.” 52The Jews said to Jesus, “Now we know that you have a demon in you! Even Abraham* and the prophets* died. But you say, ‘Whoever obeys my teaching will never die.’ 53Do you think you are greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?” 54Jesus answered, “If I give honor to myself, that honor is worth nothing. The one who gives me honor is my Father. And you say that he is your God. 55But you don’t really know him. I know him. If I said I did not know him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know him, and I obey what he says. 56Your father* Abraham was very happy that he would see the day when I came. He saw that day and was happy.” 57The Jews said to Jesus, “What? How can you say you have seen Abraham? You are not even 50 years old!” 58Jesus answered, “The fact is, before Abraham was born, I AM.” 59When he said this, they picked up stones to throw at him. But Jesus hid, and then he left the Temple* area. |

1그러나 예수께서는 올리브 산*으로 가셨다. 2이른 아침에 예수께서 다시 성전 뜰에 나타나셨다. 모든 사람이 그분 둘레에 모여들자, 예수께서 앉아서 가르치기 시작하셨다. 3그때에 율법 선생들과 바리새파 사람들이 간음*하다가 잡힌 한 여자를 그곳으로 데리고 왔다. 그들은 그 여자를 그곳에 있는 사람들 앞으로 내세웠다. 4그리고 예수께 이렇게 말하였다. “선생님, 이 여자는 간음 현장에서 붙잡혔습니다. 5모세의 법에서는 그런 여자는 모두 돌로 쳐서 죽이라고 하였습니다. 선생님의 생각은 어떻습니까?” 6그들이 이렇게 물은 것은 예수를 고소할 구실을 찾으려는 것이었다. 그러나 예수께서는 몸을 굽혀 손가락으로 땅에 무언가를 쓰기 시작하셨다. 7그들이 다그쳐 묻자, 예수께서 고개를 드시고 말씀하셨다. “너희 가운데서 한 번도 죄를 지은 적이 없는 사람이 먼저 이 여자를 돌로 쳐라.” 8그분은 다시 몸을 굽혀 땅에 글을 쓰셨다. 9율법 선생들과 바리새파 사람들은 예수의 말씀을 듣고는 하나씩 둘씩 자리를 뜨기 시작하였다. 나이가 많은 사람들이 먼저 자리를 떴다. 마침내 그곳에는 예수와, 예수 앞에 서 있는 그 여자만 남았다. 10예수께서 몸을 일으키시며 여자에게 물으셨다. “여인이여, 그들은 다 어디에 있느냐? 너를 정죄한 사람이 하나도 남아 있지 않느냐?” 11여자가 대답하였다. “아무도 없습니다, 선생님.”
예수께서 말씀하셨다. “나도 너를 정죄하지 않겠다. 이제 가거라. 그리고 앞으로 더는 죄를 짓지 말아라.”
예수는 세상의 빛이다 12예수께서 사람들에게 다시 말씀하셨다. “나는 세상의 빛이다. 누구든지 나를 따르는 사람은 결코 어둠 속을 걷지 않고, 생명의 빛을 얻을 것이다.” 13바리새파* 사람들이 예수께 말하였다. “당신이 자기 자신에 대해 증언하니, 그 증언은 참되지 못합니다.” 14예수께서 대답하셨다. “내가 비록 나 자신에 대해 증언하더라도 내 증언은 참되다. 나는 내가 어디에서 와서 어디로 가는지 알기 때문이다. 그러나 너희는 내가 어디에서 왔으며 어디로 가는지 모른다. 15너희는 사람이 정한 기준을 가지고 심판하지만, 나는 아무도 너희처럼 심판하지 않는다. 16그러나 만약 내가 심판하더라도 그 판결은 바르다. 그것은 나 혼자서 심판하는 것이 아니라, 나를 보내신 아버지께서 나와 함께 심판하시기 때문이다. 17너희의 법에서도 두 사람의 증언이 같으면, 그 증언은 참되다고 하지 않느냐? 18내가 나 자신에 대하여 증언하고 나를 보내신 아버지께서도 내게 대하여 증언하시니, 내게도 두 증인이 있다.” 19그러자 그들이 물었다. “당신의 아버지가 어디 계십니까?”
예수께서 대답하셨다. “너희는 나도 모르고 내 아버지도 모른다. 만일 너희가 나를 알았더라면 내 아버지도 알았을 것이다.” 20이것은, 예수께서 성전*에서 가르치실 때에, 헌금궤* 가까이에서 하신 말씀이다. 그러나 아무도 예수를 붙잡지 않았다. 아직 그분의 때가 오지 않았기 때문이다.
유대 지도자들이 예수를 이해하지 못하다 21예수께서 다시 한 번 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “나는 너희를 떠날 것이다. 너희는 나를 찾다가, 너희의 죄 속에서 죽고 말 것이다. 너희는 내가 가는 곳으로 올 수 없다.” 22이 말에 유대 사람들은 자기들끼리 수군거렸다. “이 사람이 스스로 목숨을 끊겠다는 말인가? 그래서 ‘너희는 내가 가는 곳으로 올 수 없다.’라고 말하는 것일까?” 23예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “너희는 여기 아래에서 왔지만 나는 위에서 왔다. 너희는 이 세상에 속하지만, 나는 이 세상에 속하지 않는다. 24나는 너희가 너희의 죄 속에서 죽을 것이라고 말하였다. 나는 ‘내가 그(그리스도)이다.’라고 주장하고 있다. 그런데 내가 ‘그’라는 것을 너희가 믿지 않으면, 너희는 정말로 너희의 죄 속에서 죽을 것이다.” 25유대 사람들이 물었다. “당신은 누구입니까?”
예수께서 대답하셨다. “나는 처음부터 너희에게 말해 온 그이다. 26나는 너희에 대하여 할 말도 많고, 잘못되었다고 심판할 것도 많다. 나를 보내신 분이 정말로 계신다. 나는 나를 보내신 분께 들은 것을 말할 뿐이다.” 27그들은 예수께서 아버지를 두고 말씀하신다는 것을 알지 못하였다. 28그래서 예수께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “너희는 사람의 아들*을 들어 올린(죽인) 뒤에야, 내가 그(그리스도)라는 것을 알게 될 것이다. 그리고 내가 아무것도 내 마음대로 하지 않고, 아버지께서 내게 가르쳐 주신 것만을 말한다는 것도 알게 될 것이다. 29나를 보내신 분(하나님)은 나와 함께 계시고, 나를 혼자 버려 두지 않으신다. 내가 언제나 그분을 기쁘게 해 드리는 일을 하기 때문이다.” 30예수의 이 말씀을 듣고 많은 사람이 예수를 믿고 의지하였다.
죄로부터의 자유에 대해 말씀하시다 31예수께서 자기를 믿은 유대 사람들에게 말씀하셨다. “너희가 내 가르침을 계속 따르면 너희는 진정한 내 제자들이다. 32그러면 너희는 진리를 알게 될 것이고, 진리가 너희를 자유롭게 할 것이다.” 33그들이 대답하였다. “우리는 아브라함의 자손이며, 어느 누구의 종이 된 적이 없습니다. 그런데 어찌하여 우리가 자유롭게 될 것이라고 말씀하십니까?” 34예수께서 대답하셨다. “내가 진정으로 너희에게 말한다. 죄를 짓는 사람은 누구나 죄의 종이다. 35종에게는 그가 있는 집안에서 영원히 차지할 자리가 없지만, 아들은 영원한 자리를 차지한다. 36그러므로 아들이 너희에게 자유를 주면, 너희는 참으로 자유로운 사람이 될 것이다. 37나는 너희가 아브라함의 자손이라는 것을 안다. 그러나 너희에게는 나의 가르침을 받아들일 자리가 없기 때문에 나를 죽이려고 한다. 38나는 아버지 앞에서 본 것을 너희에게 말한다. 그러나 너희는 너희의 아비에게서 들은 것을 행한다.” 39유대 사람들이 대꾸하였다. “우리 아버지는 아브라함입니다.”
예수께서 말씀하셨다. “너희가 진정 아브라함의 자손이라면, 아브라함이 한 일을 그대로 할 것이다. 40그러나 지금 너희는 하나님께 들은 진리를 전하는 나를 죽이려 하고 있다. 아브라함은 그렇게 하지 않았다. 41너희는 너희의 아비가 하던 일을 그대로 하고 있다.”
그들이 항의하였다. “우리는 사생아가 아닙니다. 우리의 아버지는 오직 하나님 한 분뿐이십니다.” 42예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “하나님께서 너희의 아버지시라면, 너희는 나를 사랑할 것이다. 내가 아버지께로부터 왔기 때문이다. 나는 내 마음대로 오지 않았다. 하나님께서 나를 보내셨다. 43어찌하여 너희는 내가 하는 말을 알아듣지 못하느냐? 그것은 너희가 내 가르침을 받아들이지 않기 때문이다. 44너희는 너희의 아비 곧 악마의 자식들이다. 그래서 너희는 악마인 너희의 아비가 바라는 일을 하고 싶어한다. 악마는 처음부터 살인자였고, 진리 편에 서지 않았다. 그에게 진리가 없기 때문이다. 그가 거짓말을 할 때에는, 그의 본성에서 그렇게 하는 것이다. 악마는 거짓말쟁이이며 거짓의 아비이기 때문이다. 45그러나 나는 진리를 말한다. 그런 까닭에 너희가 나를 믿지 않는다. 46너희 가운데 내게 죄가 있다고 증명할 수 있는 사람이 있느냐? 내가 진리를 말하는데도, 어찌하여 너희는 나를 믿지 않느냐? 47하나님께 속한 사람은 하나님의 말씀을 듣는다. 너희가 듣지 못하는 것은, 너희가 하나님께 속하지 않았기 때문이다.”
예수 자신과 아브라함에 관해 말씀하시다 48유대 사람들이 대꾸하였다. “우리는 당신을 사마리아 사람*이라고 말합니다. 그리고 당신이 귀신 들렸다고도 말합니다. 우리의 말이 맞습니까?” 49예수께서 대답하셨다. “나는 귀신 들린 것이 아니라 내 아버지를 높이고 있다. 그런데도 너희는 나를 멸시한다. 50나는 나 자신을 위해 영광을 얻으려 하지 않는다. 그러나 내가 영광을 얻기를 바라는 분이 계시며, 그분이 심판자이시다. 51내가 진정으로 너희에게 말한다. 내 말을 지키는 사람은 결코 죽지 않을 것이다.” 52이 말씀에 유대 사람들이 소리쳤다. “이제 우리는 당신이 귀신 들린 것을 확실히 알겠소! 아브라함도 죽었고, 예언자*들도 죽었소. 그런데 당신은 ‘내 말을 지키는 사람은 결코 죽지 않을 것이다.’라고 말하고 있소. 53당신이 우리 조상 아브라함보다 더 위대한 사람이란 말이오? 아브라함은 죽었소. 예언자들도 죽었소. 당신은 당신 자신을 누구라고 생각하시오?” 54예수께서 대답하셨다. “만일 내가 나를 영광스럽게 한다면, 그 영광은 아무것도 아니다. 나를 영광스럽게 해 주시는 분은 내 아버지시다. 너희가 너희의 하나님이라고 하는 바로 그분이시다. 55너희는 그분을 알지 못하지만 나는 그분을 안다. 만일 내가 그분을 모른다고 하면, 나도 너희처럼 거짓말쟁이가 될 것이다. 그러나 나는 정녕 그분을 알고 있으며 그분의 말씀을 지킨다. 56너희의 조상 아브라함은 내가 오는 날을 보리라 생각하고 기쁨에 차 있었다. 그는 그날을 보았고 또 기뻐하였다.” 57유대 사람들이 그에게 말하였다. “당신은 아직 쉰 살도 되지 않았는데, 아브라함을 보았단 말이오?” 58예수께서 대답하셨다. “내가 진정으로 너희에게 말한다. 아브라함이 태어나기 전부터 ‘나는 있다’*. 59예수께서 이 말씀을 하시자, 그들은 돌을 집어 들어 예수를 치려고 하였다. 그러나 예수께서는 그들 가운데를 지나서 성전* 밖으로 나가셨다. |
