From Death to Life1In the past you were spiritually dead because of your sins and the things you did against God. 2Yes, in the past your lives were full of those sins. You lived the way the world lives, following the ruler of the evil powers* over the earth. That same spirit is now working in those who refuse to obey God. 3In the past all of us lived like that, trying to please our sinful selves. We did all the things our bodies and minds wanted. Like everyone else in the world, we deserved to suffer God’s anger just because of the way we were. 4But God is rich in mercy, and he loved us very much. 5We were spiritually dead because of all we had done against him. But he gave us new life together with Christ. (You have been saved by God’s grace*.) 6Yes, it is because we are a part of Christ Jesus that God raised us from death and seated us together with him in the heavenly places. 7God did this so that his kindness to us who belong to Christ Jesus would clearly show for all time to come the amazing richness of his grace. 8I mean that you have been saved by grace because you believed. You did not save yourselves; it was a gift from God. 9You are not saved by the things you have done, so there is nothing to boast about. 10God has made us what we are. In Christ Jesus, God made us new people so that we would spend our lives doing the good things he had already planned for us to do.
One in Christ 11You were not born as Jews. You are the people the Jews call “uncircumcised*.” Those Jews who call you “uncircumcised” call themselves “circumcised.” (Their circumcision* is only something they themselves do to their bodies.) 12Remember that in the past you were without Christ. You were not citizens of Israel*, and you did not know about the agreements* with the promises that God made to his people. You had no hope, and you did not know God. 13Yes, at one time you were far away from God, but now in Christ Jesus, you are brought near to him. You are brought near to God through the blood sacrifice of Christ. 14Christ is the reason we are now at peace. He made us Jews and you who are not Jews one people. We were separated by a wall of hate that stood between us, but Christ broke down that wall. By giving his own body, 15Christ ended the law with its many commands and rules. His purpose was to make the two groups become one in him. By doing this he would make peace. 16Through the cross Christ ended the hate between the two groups. And after they became one body, he wanted to bring them both back to God. He did this with his death on the cross. 17Christ came and brought the message of peace to you non-Jews who were far away from God. And he brought that message of peace to those who were near to God. 18Yes, through Christ we all have the right to come to the Father in one Spirit*. 19So now you non-Jewish people are not visitors or strangers, but you are citizens together with God’s holy people*. You belong to God’s family. 20You believers are like a building that God owns. That building was built on the foundation that the apostles* and prophets* prepared. Christ Jesus himself is the most important stone* in that building. 21The whole building is joined together in Christ, and he makes it grow and become a holy temple* in the Lord. 22And in Christ you are being built together with his other people. You are being made into a place where God lives through the Spirit. |

죽음에서 생명으로 1여러분도 지난날에는 죄와 잘못을 저질러서 죽었던 사람들입니다. 2여러분은 죄에 얽매여 세상의 악한 길을 따라 살았습니다. 그리고 세상을 다스리는 악한 권세를 가진 통치자를 따랐습니다. 그와 똑같은 정신이 지금 하나님께 순종하지 않는 사람들 속에 살아 움직이고 있습니다. 3한때 우리 모두는 그런 사람들처럼 살았습니다. 우리는 우리의 육체가 간절히 바라는 것을 얻으려고 살았습니다. 그리하여 육체와 감각의 욕망을 좇아 살았습니다. 그러니 우리도 다른 모든 사람과 마찬가지로 하나님의 진노*하심을 받아 마땅한 사람들이었습니다. 4그러나 한없이 자비로우신 하나님께서는 크신 사랑으로 우리를 사랑하셔서, 5죄를 지어 죽었던 우리를 그리스도와 함께 살려 주셨습니다. 이렇듯 여러분이 구원을 받은 것은 하나님의 은혜 덕분입니다. 6그리고 하나님께서는 그리스도와 함께 우리를 죽은 사람들 가운데서 일으키셨고, 그리스도와 함께 하늘나라에 있는 보좌 위에 앉게 해 주셨습니다. 이 모든 것이 우리가 그리스도 예수 안에 있기 때문입니다. 7이것은, 하나님께서 우리에게 베푸신 당신의 은혜가 얼마나 풍성한지를 앞으로 올 모든 세대에게 보여 주시려는 것이었습니다. 이 은혜는 그리스도 예수를 통하여 우리에게 베푸신 자비 가운데 드러나 있습니다. 8여러분은 하나님의 은혜로 구원을 받았습니다. 여러분이 그런 은혜를 받은 것은, 여러분이 믿었기 때문이었습니다. 여러분이 여러분 자신을 구원한 것이 아닙니다. 여러분의 구원은 하나님에게서 선물로 받은 것입니다. 9여러분은 결코 여러분이 한 어떤 일 때문에 구원 받은 것이 아닙니다. 그러므로 어느 누구도 자신을 구원했다고 자랑할 수 없습니다. 10우리는 하나님의 작품입니다. 하나님께서는 우리가 선한 일을 하며 살게 하시려고, 그리스도 예수 안에서 우리를 새사람으로 만들어 주셨습니다. 이 일은 하나님께서 우리를 위해 이미 계획해 놓으셨던 것입니다.
그리스도 안에 있는 사람 11그러므로 이방 사람으로 태어난 여러분, 지난날을 생각해 보십시오. 여러분은 유대 사람들이 ‘할례 받지 못한 사람들’이라고 부르는 사람들이었습니다. 유대 사람들은 자신들은 ‘할례 받은 사람들’이라고 생각하고 뽐냅니다. 그러나 그들의 할례는 사람의 손으로 몸에다 행하는 육체적인 할례에 지나지 않습니다. 12여러분이 그때에는 그리스도 없이 살았고, 하나님의 백성인 이스라엘*에 들지 못하였다는 것을 기억하십시오. 여러분은 하나님께서 당신의 백성과 맺으신 계약을 알지 못하였습니다. 그리고 하나님을 알지 못한 채, 이 세상에서 아무런 희망도 없이 살고 있었습니다. 13그러나 이제 여러분은 그리스도 예수 안에 있습니다. 그리하여 한때 하나님으로부터 멀리 떨어져 있던 여러분이, 이제는 그리스도의 피(죽음)를 통하여 하나님께 가까이 오게 되었습니다. 14그리스도께서 유대 사람인 우리와 이방 사람인 여러분을 하나가 되게 하심으로써, 우리 사이에 평화를 누리게 되었기 때문입니다. 전에는 유대 사람과 이방 사람 사이에는 그들을 갈라놓는 미움의 담이 있어서 서로를 미워하였습니다. 그러나 그리스도께서 당신의 몸을 내주심으로써, 그 담을 헐어 버리셨습니다. 15유대 사람의 율법에는 이방 사람을 따돌리는 많은 명령과 규칙이 있습니다. 그러나 그리스도께서 그 율법을 없애 버리셨습니다. 그것은, 이 둘을 자신 안에서 하나의 새로운 사람으로 만들어 내셔서 평화를 이루시려는 것이었습니다. 16그리스도께서는 십자가를 통하여 유대 사람과 이방 사람 사이의 미움을 없애 버리심으로써, 이 둘이 한 몸이 되어 하나님과 화해를 이루게 하셨습니다. 17그리스도께서 오셔서 하나님께로부터 멀리 떠나 있던 이방인 여러분에게 평화의 기쁜 소식을 선포하셨습니다. 그리고 하나님께 가까이 있던 우리 유대 사람에게도 평화의 기쁜 소식을 선포하셨습니다. 18그리스도를 통하여, 이방 사람과 유대 사람 둘 다 한 영* 안에서 아버지께 나아가게 되었습니다. 19그러므로 이제 여러분은 외국인도 아니고 나그네도 아닙니다. 여러분은 하나님의 거룩한 백성과 시민이며, 하나님의 집안사람입니다. 20우리는 하나님께서 세우신 건물입니다. 그 건물은 사도*들과 예언자*들이라는 기초 위에 세워졌습니다. 그리고 그리스도 자신은 그 건물의 가장 중요한 모퉁잇돌*이십니다. 21이 건물은 모퉁잇돌이신 그리스도를 중심으로 하여 전체가 하나로 연결되어 있습니다. 그리고 거룩한 성전*으로 우뚝 섭니다. 22여러분도 그리스도 안에서 연결되어서 함께 건물을 이루어, 하나님께서 영*을 통하여 사시는 곳이 됩니다. |
