Paul Before King Agrippa1Agrippa* said to Paul, “You may now speak to defend yourself.” Paul raised his hand to get their attention and began to speak. 2He said, “King Agrippa, I feel fortunate that I can stand here before you today and answer all the charges these Jews have made against me. 3I am very happy to talk to you, because you know so much about all the Jewish customs and the things the Jews argue about. Please listen to me patiently. 4“All the Jews know about my whole life. They know the way I lived from the beginning in my own country and later in Jerusalem. 5These Jews have known me for a long time. If they want to, they can tell you that I was a good Pharisee*. And the Pharisees obey the laws of the Jewish religion more carefully than any other group. 6Now I am on trial because I hope for the promise that God made to our fathers*. 7This is the promise that all the twelve tribes of our people hope to receive. For this hope the Jews serve God day and night. My king, the Jews have accused me because I hope for this same promise. 8Why do you people think it is impossible for God to raise people from death? 9“I used to think that I should do everything I could against Jesus from Nazareth. 10And that’s what I did, beginning in Jerusalem. The leading priests gave me the authority to put many of God’s people in jail. And when they were being killed, I agreed that it was a good thing. 11I visited all the synagogues* and punished them, trying to make them curse* Jesus. My anger against these people was so strong that I went to other cities to find them and punish them.
Paul Tells About Seeing Jesus 12“One time the leading priests gave me permission and the authority to go to the city of Damascus. 13On the way there, at noon, I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun. It shined all around me and those traveling with me. 14We all fell to the ground. Then I heard a voice talking to me in Aramaic*. The voice said, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting* me? You are only hurting yourself by fighting me.’ 15“I said, ‘Who are you, Lord?’
“The Lord said, ‘I am Jesus. I am the one you are persecuting. 16Stand up! I have chosen you to be my servant. You will tell people about me - what you have seen today and what I will show you. This is why I have come to you. 17I will keep you safe from your own people and from the non-Jewish people, the ones I am sending you to. 18You will make them able to understand the truth. They will turn away from darkness to the light. They will turn away from the power of Satan, and they will turn to God. Then their sins can be forgiven, and they can be given a place among God’s people - those who have been made holy* by believing in me.’”
Paul Tells About His Work 19Paul continued speaking: “King Agrippa*, after I had this vision* from heaven, I obeyed it. 20I began telling people to change their hearts and lives and turn back to God. And I told them to do what would show that they had really changed. I went first to people in Damascus. Then I went to Jerusalem and to every part of Judea and told the people there. I also went to the non-Jewish people. 21“This is why the Jews grabbed me and were trying to kill me at the Temple*. 22But God helped me, and he is still helping me today. With God’s help I am standing here today and telling all people what I have seen. But I am saying nothing new. I am saying only what Moses* and the prophets* said would happen. 23They said that the Messiah* would die and be the first to rise from death. They said that he would bring the light of God’s saving truth* to the Jewish people and to the non-Jewish people.”
Paul Tries to Persuade Agrippa 24While Paul was still defending himself, Festus shouted, “Paul, you are out of your mind! Too much study has made you crazy.” 25Paul said, “Most Honorable Festus, I am not crazy. What I am saying is true. It all makes perfect sense. 26King Agrippa* knows about all this, and I can speak freely to him. I know that he has heard about these things, because they happened where everyone could see them. 27King Agrippa, do you believe what the prophets* wrote? I know you believe!” 28King Agrippa said to Paul, “Do you think you can persuade me to become a ‘Christ-follower’ so easily?” 29Paul said, “It is not important if it is easy or if it is hard. I pray to God that not only you but that everyone listening to me today could be saved and be just like me - except for these chains I have!” 30King Agrippa, Governor Festus, Bernice*, and all the people sitting with them stood up 31and left the room. They were talking to each other. They said, “This man has done nothing worthy of being put to death or even put in jail.” 32And Agrippa said to Festus, “We could let him go free, but he has asked to see Caesar*.” |

| 1아그립바가 바울에게 말하였다. “네 자신을 위해서 하고 싶은 말을 해도 좋다.”
그러자 바울은 앞으로 손을 내밀고 자신을 변호하기 시작하였다. 2”아그립바왕 전하, 유대 사람들이 저를 고발한 일에 대해 오늘 전하 앞에서 제 자신을 변호하게 된 것을 매우 다행스럽게 생각합니다. 3전하께서는 유대 사람의 관습과 그들이 문제 삼는 점들을 잘 알고 계시기 때문입니다. 그러므로 부디 제 말을 끝까지 들어 주시기 바랍니다. 4모든 유대 사람은 제가 젊었을 때부터 지금까지 어떻게 살아왔는지 잘 알고 있습니다. 곧 제가 제 동족 가운데서 지내던 일과 예루살렘에서 지내던 일을 처음부터 다 알고 있다는 말입니다. 5그들은 오래 전부터 저를 알아 왔습니다. 그들이 하고 싶은 마음만 있다면, 제가 우리 종교 가운데서 가장 엄격한 종파인 바리새파*의 한 사람으로 살아왔다는 것을 증언해 줄 수도 있을 것입니다. 6그리고 제가 지금 이 재판 자리에 서 있는 것은, 제가 하나님께서 우리 조상과 맺으신 약속에 희망을 걸고 있기 때문입니다. 7이 희망은, 우리 이스라엘 열두 가문이 밤낮으로 열심히 하나님을 섬기면서 이루어지기를 바라고 있는 바로 그 희망입니다. 전하, 제가 지금 유대 사람들에게 고발당하고 있는 것도 바로 이 희망 때문입니다. 8여러분은 어찌하여 하나님께서 죽은 사람을 다시 살리신다는 것을 믿을 수 없는 일로 여기십니까? 9저도 한때는 나사렛 예수의 이름과 맞서서, 제 힘으로 할 수 있는 일은 다 해야 한다고 생각했습니다. 10제가 예루살렘에서 한 일이 바로 그런 일이었습니다. 저는 높은 제사장들에게서 권한을 받아서 많은 믿는 이들을 감옥에 처넣었습니다. 그리고 그들을 죽일 때, 저는 그 일에 찬성하였습니다. 11그리고 회당*마다 찾아가서, 그들을 벌주고 억지로 그들의 신앙을 부인하게 하였습니다. 저는 그들에게 너무도 화가 나서, 다른 나라에 있는 도시들까지 찾아다니면서 그들을 박해*하였습니다. 12이런 일을 하고 다니던 가운데, 한번은 높은 제사장들에게서 권한과 임무를 받아 가지고 다마스커스로 가고 있었습니다. 13오, 전하, 제가 한낮에 길을 가고 있는데, 갑자기 태양보다 더 밝은 빛이 저와 또 저와 같이 가던 사람들을 둘러싸는 것이었습니다. 14우리는 모두 땅에 엎드렸습니다. 그리고 아람 말*로 ‘사울아, 사울아, 어찌하여 네가 나를 박해하느냐? 뾰족한 몰이막대기를 발로 차면, 너만 아플 뿐이다.’ 하는 목소리가 들려왔습니다. 15그래서 제가 ‘주여, 당신은 누구십니까?’ 하고 여쭈었습니다.
주께서 대답하셨습니다. ‘나는 네가 박해하는 예수다. 16자, 이제 일어나 네 발로 서라. 내가 네게 나타난 것은, 너를 내 일꾼으로 삼아서, 네가 나를 본 것과 내가 앞으로 네게 보여 줄 일에 대한 증인으로 삼으려는 것이다. 17나는 너를 네 동족과 이방 사람들의 손에서 건져 주어, 이방 사람들에게 보내겠다. 18너는 그들의 눈을 열어 진리를 보게 하고, 어둠에서 벗어나 빛으로 돌아서게 하고, 사탄의 손아귀에서 벗어나 하나님께 돌아오게 할 것이다. 그리하여 그들이 죄를 용서 받고, 나를 믿어 거룩하게 된 사람들 가운데 들게 할 것이다.’ 19아그립바왕* 전하, 저는 그 하늘의 환상*을 거스르지 않았습니다. 20저는 먼저 다마스커스에 있는 사람들에게, 그리고 예루살렘과 온 유대 지방 사람들에게, 나아가서 이방 사람들에게 회개하고 하나님께 돌아와야 한다고 전하였습니다. 그리고 자신들의 행위로 회개한 것을 증명해야 한다고 전하였습니다. 21바로 그 때문에 유대 사람들이, 제가 성전* 뜰에 있을 때에 저를 붙들어서 죽이려고 했던 것입니다. 22저는 오늘까지 하나님의 도움을 받았습니다. 그래서 이렇게 이 자리에 서서 낮은 사람에게나 높은 사람에게나 증언을 하고 있습니다. 저는, 예언자*들과 모세가 앞으로 일어날 일이라고 말한 것 밖에는 다른 어떤 이야기도 전하지 않습니다. 23그들이 앞으로 일어나리라고 예언한 그 일이란, 그리스도*께서 반드시 고난을 겪으셔야 한다는 것과, 죽은 사람들 가운데서 처음으로 살아난 분이 되어, 우리 백성과 다른 나라 백성 모두에게 빛을 선포하시리라는 것입니다.” 24이렇게 바울이 자기를 변호하자 베스도가 큰 소리로 말하였다. “바울아, 네가 미쳤구나! 너의 많은 학문이 너를 미치게 하는구나.” 25바울이 대답하였다. “존경하는 베스도 각하, 저는 미치지 않았습니다. 제가 말씀드리는 것은 맑은 정신으로 드리는 참말입니다. 26여기 계신 아그립바왕께서 이 일들에 대해서 잘 알고 계시기 때문에, 저는 거리낌 없이 전하께 말씀드립니다. 저는 전하께서 이 일을 잘 알고 계시리라 믿습니다. 이 일은 어느 한쪽 구석에서 일어난 일이 아니기 때문입니다. 27아그립바왕 전하, 전하께서는 예언자들이 기록하여 놓은 것을 믿으십니까? 저는 전하께서 믿으신다는 것을 알고 있습니다.” 28그러자 아그립바왕이 바울에게 말하였다. “너는 짧은 시간에 나를 설득하여 그리스도인으로 만들 수 있다고 생각하느냐?” 29바울이 대답하였다. “짧은 시간에든 긴 시간에든, 저는 전하뿐만 아니라 오늘 제 말을 듣고 있는 모든 사람이, 저처럼 쇠사슬에 묶이는 일을 빼고는 저와 똑같이 되기를 하나님께 기도합니다.” 30그러자 왕이 일어섰고, 총독과 버니게*와, 그들과 함께 앉아 있던 사람들이 자리에서 일어났다. 31그들은 그 자리를 떠나면서 이렇게 이야기를 주고받았다. “이 사람은 사형을 당하거나 감옥에 갇힐 만한 일을 한 것이 없소.” 32아그립바가 베스도에게 말하였다. “이 사람이 시저*에게 상소하지 않았으면 풀려날 수도 있었을 것이오.” |
