The Example of Abraham1So what can we say about Abraham*, the father of our people? What did he learn about faith? 2If Abraham was made right by the things he did, he had a reason to boast about himself. But God knew different. 3That’s why the Scriptures* say, “Abraham believed God, and because of this he was accepted as one who is right with God.”* 4When people work, their pay is not given to them as a gift. They earn the pay they get. 5But people cannot do any work that will make them right with God. So they must trust in him. Then he accepts their faith, and that makes them right with him. He is the one who makes even evil people right. 6David* said the same thing when he was talking about the blessing people have when God accepts them as good without looking at what they have done: 7“It is a great blessing when people are forgiven for the wrongs they have done, when their sins are erased! 8It is a great blessing when the Lord accepts people as if they are without sin!”* 9Is this blessing only for those who are circumcised*? Or is it also for those who are not circumcised? We have already said that it was because of Abraham’s faith that he was accepted as one who is right with God. 10So how did this happen? Did God accept Abraham before or after he was circumcised? God accepted him before his circumcision. 11Abraham was circumcised later to show that God accepted him. His circumcision was proof that he was right with God through faith before he was circumcised. So Abraham is the father of all those who believe but are not circumcised. They believe and are accepted as people who are right with God. 12And Abraham is also the father of those who have been circumcised. But it is not their circumcision that makes him their father. He is their father only if they live following the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.
God’s Promise Received Through Faith 13Abraham* and his descendants received the promise that they would get the whole world. But Abraham* did not receive that promise because he followed the law. He received that promise because he was right with God through his faith. 14If people could get God’s promise by following the law*, then faith is worthless. And God’s promise to Abraham is worthless, 15because the law can only bring God’s anger on those who disobey it. But if there is no law, then there is nothing to disobey. 16So people get what God promised by having faith. This happens so that the promise can be a free gift. And if the promise is a free gift, then all of Abraham’s people will get that promise. The promise is not just for those who live under the Law of Moses*. It is for all who live with faith as Abraham did. He is the father of us all. 17As the Scriptures* say, “I have made you a father of many nations.”* This is true before God, the one Abraham believed - the God who gives life to the dead and speaks of things that don’t yet exist as if they are real. 18There was no hope that Abraham would have children, but Abraham believed God and continued to hope. And that is why he became the father of many nations. As God told him, “You will have many descendants.”* 19Abraham was almost a hundred years old, so he was past the age for having children. Also, Sarah could not have children. Abraham was well aware of this, but his faith in God never became weak. 20He never doubted that God would do what he promised. He never stopped believing. In fact, he grew stronger in his faith and just praised God. 21Abraham felt sure that God was able to do what he promised. 22So that’s why “he was accepted as one who is right with God.”* 23These words (“he was accepted”) were written not only for Abraham. 24They were also written for us. God will also accept us because we believe. We believe in the one who raised Jesus our Lord from death. 25Jesus was handed over to die for our sins, and he was raised from death to make us right with God. |

아브라함의 모범 1그렇다면 우리는, 육에 따른 우리의 조상인 아브라함*이 무엇을 경험했다고 말해야겠습니까?* 2하나님께서 아브라함을 그의 행위를 보시고 받아 주셨다면, 그는 한번 자랑해 볼 만도 합니다. 그러나 아브라함은 하나님 앞에서 자랑할 것이 없었습니다. 3성경*은 무엇이라고 말합니까? “아브라함이 하나님을 믿으니, 하나님께서 그를 받아 주실 만한 사람으로 여겨 주셨다.”*라고 하였습니다. 4일을 하는 사람의 경우에는, 그가 받는 품삯이 선물이 아니라 당연히 받을 보수로 여겨집니다. 5그러나 일은 하지 않으나, 악한 사람을 받아 주시는 하나님을 믿는 사람의 경우에는, 하나님께서 그의 믿음을 보시고 그를 받아 주실 만한 사람으로 여겨 주십니다. 다윗*도 일과는 상관없이 하나님께서 받아 주실 만한 사람으로 여겨 주시는 사람은 복이 있다고 같은 뜻의 말을 하고 있습니다. 7”하나님께서 잘못을 용서해 주시고, 죄를 덮어 주신 사람은 복이 있다. 8주께서 그의 죄를 생각하지 않는 사람은 복이 있다!”시 32:1-2 9그렇다면 이러한 복은 할례* 받은 사람에게만 내리는 것입니까? 아니면 할례*를 받지 않은 사람에게도 내리는 것입니까? 우리는 앞에서 “하나님께서 아브라함의 믿음을 보시고 그를 받아 줄 만한 사람으로 여기셨다.”라고 말하였습니다. 10그가 어떤 상황에 처해 있을 때에 그를 받아 줄 만한 사람으로 여기셨습니까? 그가 할례 받은 뒤입니까, 아니면 받기 전이었습니까? 그가 할례 받은 뒤가 아니라 받기 전이었습니다. 11그리고 그는, 하나님께서 그가 할례 받기 전에 가졌던 믿음을 보시고 그를 받아 주셨다는 것을 확인하는 도장으로서, 할례라는 표적*을 받았습니다. 그렇다면 그는 믿으면서도 할례는 받지 않은 모든 사람의 조상입니다. 그것은, 할례를 받지 않은 사람들도 하나님께서 받아 줄 만한 사람들로 여기시려는 것입니다. 12또한 아브라함은 할례를 받은 사람들의 조상이기도 합니다. 그 사람들은 할례를 받았을 뿐만 아니라, 우리 조상 아브라함이 할례를 받기 전에 가졌던 믿음의 발자취를 좇아 살기도 한 사람들입니다.
믿음을 통해서 받은 하나님의 약속 13하나님께서는 아브라함과 그의 자손에게 세상을 물려주겠다는 약속을 하셨습니다. 그러나 아브라함이 그 약속을 받은 것은, 그가 율법*을 지켰기 때문이 아닙니다. 그가 그런 약속을 받은 것은, 하나님께서 그의 믿음을 보시고 그를 받아 주셨기 때문입니다. 14율법을 따라 사는 사람이 하나님께서 약속하신 것을 받는다면, 믿음은 소용없는 것입니다. 그리고 하나님께서 아브라함에게 하신 약속도 쓸모없는 것이 되어 버립니다. 15율법은 하나님의 진노*를 불러옵니다. 그리고 율법이 없는 곳에는 율법을 어기는 일도 없습니다. 16그러므로 이 약속은 믿음에 그 바탕을 둔 것입니다. 그것은, 약속이 하나님께서 거저 주시는 선물이 되게 하려는 것입니다. 그리고 아브라함의 모든 자손, 곧 모세의 율법을 믿고 받드는 사람들뿐만 아니라 아브라함이 가졌던 믿음을 가진 사람은, 누구든지 약속하신 것을 받을 수 있다는 것을 보장하려는 것입니다. (아브라함은 우리 모두의 조상이기 때문입니다. 17성경*에도 “나는 너 아브라함을 많은 민족의* 조상으로 삼았다.”*라고 기록되어 있습니다.) 이 약속은, 그가 믿은 하나님, 곧 죽은 자를 살리시고 없는 것도 있게 만드시는 하나님 앞에서 보장된 것입니다. 18아브라함이 자손을 가지게 되리라는 희망이 이루어질 수 없을 것 같아 보였을 때에도, 아브라함은 여전히 희망을 가지고 하나님의 약속을 굳게 믿었습니다. 그래서 그는, “네 자손이 하늘의 별들처럼 많아질 것이다.”*라는 하나님의 말씀처럼, 많은 민족의 조상이 되었습니다. 19그때 아브라함의 나이는 거의 백 살이어서, 그의 몸은 이미 죽은 것과 마찬가지였습니다. 그리고 그의 아내 사라의 자궁 또한 죽은 것이나 마찬가지였습니다. 아브라함도 이런 점들을 잘 알고 있었습니다. 그러나 하나님에 대한 그의 믿음은 약해지지 않았습니다. 20아브라함은 하나님께서 당신의 약속을 지키시리라는 것을 의심하지 않았습니다. 그는 오히려 믿음이 더욱 강해져서 하나님을 찬양하였습니다. 21아브라함은, 하나님은 약속하신 것을 이룰 수 있는 능력을 가진 분이심을 굳게 믿었습니다. 22그 믿음 때문에 “하나님께서는 그를 받아 줄 만한 사람으로 여기셨습니다.”* 23그것은 아브라함만을 위한 것이 아니라 24우리를 위한 것이기도 하였습니다. 하나님께서는 우리 주 예수를 죽은 자들 가운데서 살려내신 분(하나님)을 믿는 우리도 받아 줄 만한 사람들로 여기시려 했기 때문입니다. 25예수는 우리의 죄 때문에 죽음에 넘겨지셨습니다. 그리고 우리를 하나님께서 받아 주실 만한 사람들이 되게 하시려고 죽음에서 살리심을 받았습니다. |
