Wives and Husbands1In the same way, you wives should be willing to serve your husbands. Then, even those who have refused to accept God’s teaching will be persuaded to believe because of the way you live. You will not need to say anything. 2Your husbands will see the pure lives that you live with respect for God. 3It is not fancy hair, gold jewelry, or fine clothes that should make you beautiful. 4No, your beauty should come from inside you - the beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit. That beauty will never disappear. It is worth very much to God. 5It was the same with the holy* women who lived long ago and followed God. They made themselves beautiful in that same way. They were willing to serve their husbands. 6I am talking about women like Sarah. She obeyed Abraham*, her husband, and called him her master. And you women are true children of Sarah if you always do what is right and are not afraid. 7In the same way, you husbands should live with your wives in an understanding way, since they are weaker than you. You should show them respect, because God gives them the same blessing he gives you - the grace* of true life. Do this so that nothing will stop your prayers from being heard.
Suffering for Doing Right 8So all of you should live together in peace. Try to understand each other. Love each other like brothers and sisters. Be kind and humble. 9Don’t do wrong to anyone to pay them back for doing wrong to you. Or don’t insult anyone to pay them back for insulting you. But ask God to bless them. Do this because you yourselves were chosen to receive a blessing. 10The Scriptures* say,
“If you want to enjoy true life and have only good days,
then avoid saying anything hurtful, and never let a lie come out of your mouth. 11Stop doing what is wrong, and do good. Look for peace, and do all you can to help people live peacefully. 12The Lord watches over those who do what is right, and he listens to their prayers.
But he is against those who do evil.”* 13If you are always trying to do good, no one can really harm you. 14But you may suffer for doing right. If that happens, you have God’s blessing. “Don’t be afraid of the people who make you suffer; don’t be worried.”* 15But keep the Lord Christ holy in your hearts. Always be ready to answer everyone who asks you to explain about the hope you have. 16But answer them in a gentle way with respect. Keep your conscience clear. Then people will see the good way you live as followers of Christ, and those who say bad things about you will be ashamed of what they said. 17It is better to suffer for doing good than for doing wrong. Yes, it is better if that is what God wants. 18Christ himself suffered when he died for you, and with that one death he paid for your sins.
He was not guilty, but he died for people who are guilty. He did this to bring all of you to God.
In his physical form he was killed, but he was made alive by the Spirit*.* 19And by the Spirit he went and preached to the spirits in prison. 20Those were the spirits who refused to obey God long ago in the time of Noah. God was waiting patiently for people while Noah was building the big boat. And only a few - eight in all - were saved in the boat through the floodwater. 21And that water is like baptism*, which now saves you. Baptism is not the washing of dirt from the body. It is asking God for a clean conscience. It saves you because Jesus Christ was raised from death. 22Now he has gone into heaven. He is at God’s right side and rules over angels, authorities, and powers. |

아내와 남편 1아내인 여러분, 여러분도 마찬가지로 남편들에게 복종하십시오. 그러면 하나님의 말씀을 믿지 않는 남편들이, 아내가 말 한 마디 하지 않아도, 아내의 행실을 보고 말씀을 받아들이게 될 것입니다. 2그들은 여러분의 경건하고 순결한 행실을 보게 될 것입니다. 3여러분은 머리를 꾸미거나 금붙이를 달거나 좋은 옷을 입는 것과 같은 겉치장을 하지 마십시오. 4썩지 않는 장식 곧 겸손하고 평화로운 성품으로 여러분의 속사람을 단장하십시오. 이런 것이 하나님 보시기에 아주 값진 것입니다. 5하나님께 희망을 걸었던 지난날의 거룩한 여인들도 이렇게 자신들을 아름답게 꾸몄습니다. 그들은 자기 남편들에게 복종하였습니다. 6사라가 바로 그런 여인이었습니다. 그는 남편 아브라함에게 순종하며, 남편을 ‘주’라고 불렀습니다. 여러분도 선한 일을 하고 어떤 놀랄 만한 일에도 무서워하지 않으면 사라의 딸들입니다. 7남편인 여러분, 여러분도 마찬가지로 아내와 살면서 아내를 깊이 생각해 주십시오. 그들을 존중히 대접하십시오. 그들이 여러분보다 연약한 여성이기 때문입니다. 아내는 하나님께서 주시는 생명의 선물을 함께 나누는 사람입니다. 그렇게 하여 여러분의 기도가 막히지 않게 하십시오.
옳은 일을 위해 겪는 고난 8끝으로 말합니다. 여러분은 모두 같은 마음을 가지고 살아가십시오. 서로 동정하고, 형제자매처럼 사랑하며, 자비를 베풀고, 겸손하게 사십시오. 9악을 악으로 갚거나, 모욕을 모욕으로 갚지 말고, 오히려 복을 빌어 주십시오. 여러분은 이것을 위해서 하나님의 부르심을 받았습니다. 그것은 여러분이 하나님의 복을 유산으로 받게 하려는 것입니다. 10”누구든지 생명을 누리고 좋은 시절을 맞이하고 싶은 사람은, 혀를 조심하여 악한 말을 하지 말고 입술을 조심하여 거짓말을 하지 말아라. 11그는 악을 버리고 선을 행하고 평화를 추구하고, 그것을 좇아야 한다. 12주님의 눈은 의인들을 굽어보시고, 주님의 귀는 그들의 기도를 들으신다. 그러나 악한 짓을 하는 자들에게서는 얼굴을 돌리신다.”시 34:12-16 13여러분이 열심히 선한 일을 하려 하면, 누가 여러분을 해치려 하겠습니까? 14혹 옳은 일을 위하여 고난을 당하더라도 여러분은 복이 있습니다. 그러므로 “그들이 두려워하는 것*을 두려워하지 말고, 겁먹지 마십시오.”* 15오직 여러분의 마음속에 그리스도를 주님으로 거룩하게 모십시오. 그리고 여러분이 가진 희망에 관하여 설명을 듣고 싶어하는 사람들에게 언제라도 대답할 수 있도록 준비하고 계십시오. 16그러나 답변을 할 때에는 그들을 존중하는 마음으로 부드럽게 하십시오. 여러분의 양심을 깨끗하게 지키십시오. 그리하여 여러분이 그리스도 안에서 실천하는 선한 행실을 헐뜯던 사람들이 부끄러움을 당하게 하십시오. 17만일 고통을 당하는 것이 하나님의 뜻이라면, 선한 일을 하다가 고난을 당하는 것이 악한 짓을 하다가 고난을 당하는 것보다 낫습니다. 18그리스도께서도 여러분의 죄 때문에 단 한 번이자 마지막으로 죽으셨습니다. 여러분을 하나님께 인도하시려고, 죄를 지은 적이 없는 분이 죄인들을 위하여 죽으셨습니다. 그분의 몸은 죽임을 당했으나 성령으로 다시 살아나셨습니다. 19또한 성령으로, 갇혀 있는 영들에게도 가셔서 기쁜 소식을 선포하셨습니다. 20그 영들은 오래 전에 노아가 방주를 만들고 있는 동안에 하나님께서 참고 기다리셨으나 순종하지 않던 자들입니다. 노아가 만든 방주에 들어감으로써 물을 통하여 구원받은 사람은 겨우 여덟 사람뿐이었습니다. 21그 물은 지금 여러분을 구원하는 세례와 같습니다. 세례는 몸에서 더러움을 씻어 내는 것이 아닙니다. 그것은 깨끗한 양심으로 살겠다고 하나님께 드리는 서약입니다. 세례는 예수 그리스도의 부활을 통하여 여러분을 구원합니다. 22그리스도께서는 하늘로 올라가셔서 하나님의 오른편*에 앉아 계시며, 천사들과 권세들과 능력들을 다스리고 계십니다. |
