Use Spiritual Gifts to Help the Church1Love should be the goal of your life, but you should also want to have the gifts that come from the Spirit*. And the gift you should want most is to be able to prophesy*. 2I will explain why. Those who have the gift of speaking in a different language are not speaking to people. They are speaking to God. No one understands them - they are speaking secret things through the Spirit. 3But those who prophesy are speaking to people. They help people grow stronger in faith, and they give encouragement and comfort. 4Those who speak in a different language are helping only themselves. But those who prophesy are helping the whole church*. 5I would like all of you to have the gift of speaking in different languages. But what I want more is for you to prophesy. Anyone who prophesies is more important than those who can only speak in different languages. However, if they can also interpret those languages, they are as important as the one who prophesies. If they can interpret, then the church can be helped by what they say. 6Brothers and sisters, will it help you if I come to you speaking in different languages? No, it will help you only if I bring you a new truth or some knowledge, prophecy*, or teaching. 7This is true even with lifeless things that make sounds - like a flute or a harp. If the different musical notes are not made clear, you can’t understand what song is being played. Each note must be played clearly for you to be able to understand the tune. 8And in a war, if the trumpet does not sound clearly, the soldiers will not know it is time to prepare for fighting. 9It is the same with you. If you don’t speak clearly in a language people know, they cannot understand what you are saying. You will be talking to the air! 10It is true that there are many different languages in the world, and they all have meaning. 11But if I don’t understand the meaning of what someone is saying, it will just be strange sounds to me, and I will sound just as strange to them. 12That’s why you who want spiritual gifts so much should prefer those gifts that help the church grow stronger. 13So those who have the gift of speaking in a different language should pray that they can also interpret what they say. 14If I pray in a different language, my spirit is praying, but my mind does nothing. 15So what should I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind. I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. 16You might be praising God with your spirit. But someone there without understanding cannot say “Amen”* to your prayer of thanks, because they don’t know what you are saying. 17You may be thanking God in a good way, but others are not helped. 18I thank God that my gift of speaking in different kinds of languages is greater than any of yours. 19But in the church meetings I would rather speak five words that I understand than thousands of words in a different language. I would rather speak with my understanding, so that I can teach others. 20Brothers and sisters, don’t think like children. In evil things be like babies, but in your thinking you should be like full-grown adults. 21As the Scriptures* say,
“Using those who speak a different language and using the lips of foreigners,
I will speak to these people. But even then, they will not obey me.” This is what the Lord says.* 22And from this we see that the use of different languages shows how God deals with those who don’t believe, not with those who believe. And prophecy shows how God works through those who believe, not through unbelievers. 23Suppose the whole church meets together and you all speak in different languages. If some people come in who are without understanding or don’t believe, they will say you are crazy. 24But suppose you are all prophesying and someone comes in who does not believe or who is without understanding. Their sin will be shown to them, and they will be judged by everything you say. 25The secret things in their heart will be made known. So they will bow down and worship God. They will say, “Without a doubt, God is here with you.”*
Your Meetings Should Be Helpful to All 26So, brothers and sisters, what should you do? When you meet together, one person has a song, another has a teaching, and another has a new truth from God. One person speaks in a different language, and another interprets that language. The purpose of whatever you do should be to help everyone grow stronger in faith. 27When you meet together, if anyone speaks to the group in a different language, it should be only two or no more than three people who do this. And they should speak one after the other. And someone else should interpret what they say. 28But if there is no interpreter, then anyone who speaks in a different language should be quiet in the church meeting. They should speak only to themselves and to God. 29And only two or three prophets* should speak. The others should judge what they say. 30And if a message from God comes to someone who is sitting, the first speaker should be quiet. 31You can all prophesy* one after the other. This way everyone can be taught and encouraged. 32The spirits of prophets are under the control of the prophets themselves. 33God is not a God of confusion but a God of peace. This is the rule for all the meetings of God’s people. 34The women should keep quiet in these church* meetings. They are not allowed to speak out but should be under authority, as the Law of Moses says. 35If there is something they want to know, they should ask their own husbands at home. It is shameful for a woman to speak up like that in the church meeting. 36God’s teaching did not come from you, and you are not the only ones who have received it. 37If you think you are a prophet or that you have a spiritual gift, you should understand that what I am writing to you is the Lord’s command. 38If you do not accept this, you will not be accepted. 39So my brothers and sisters, continue to give your attention to prophesying. And don’t stop anyone from using the gift of speaking in different languages. 40But everything should be done in a way that is right and orderly. |

“내가 귀에 선 언어로 말하는 사람들과
이방 사람*의 입을 빌려 이 백성에게 말할지라도,
그들은 내 말에 귀를 기울이지 않을 것이다.”사 28:11-12; 신 28:49
이것은 주께서 하신 말씀입니다. 22그러므로 여러 가지 다른 언어로 말하는 것*은, 믿는 사람이 아니라 믿지 않는 사람들에게 보여 주는 하나님의 능력의 표입니다. 그러나 하나님의 말씀을 받아 전하는 것*은 믿는 사람들을 위한 것이지, 믿지 않는 사람들을 위한 것은 아닙니다. 23온 교회가 한 자리에 모여서 모든 사람이 각기 다른 언어로* 말한다고 가정해 보십시오. 이런 것들을 이해하지 못하는 사람들이나 믿지 않는 사람들이 교회에 왔다가, 여러분을 보고 미쳤다고 하지 않겠습니까? 24그러나 여러분 모두가 하나님의 말씀을 받아 전하고 있는데, 믿지 않는 사람이나 깨달음이 없는 사람이 들어왔다고 가정해 보십시오. 그 사람은 여러분이 하는 말을 듣고 자기가 죄인이라는 사실을 깨닫고 마음에 찔림을 받을 것입니다. 25그리고 그 사람의 마음속에 숨겨진 비밀스러운 생각들도 환히 드러날 것입니다. 그렇게 되면, 그 사람은 엎드려 하나님을 경배할 것입니다. 그리고 “정말로 여러분 가운데 하나님이 계십니다.”라고 외칠 것입니다.
여러분의 모임이 교회에 도움이 되게 하여라 26그러니 형제자매 여러분, 어떻게 해야겠습니까? 여러분이 모이는 자리에서, 찬송하는 사람도 있고, 가르치는 사람도 있고, 하나님의 계시를 받아 전하는 사람도 있고, 다른 언어로* 말하는 사람도 있고, 그 언어를 통역하는 사람도 있습니다. 그런데 이 모든 일을, 교회를 더욱 든든하게 세우는 데 도움이 되도록 하십시오. 27다른 언어로* 말하는 것은, 둘 또는 많아야 세 사람만 하도록 하십시오. 그 두세 사람도 차례를 따라 하십시오. 그리고 한 사람은 그들의 말을 통역하십시오. 28그러나 통역할 사람이 없으면, 다른 언어로* 말하는 사람은 교회의 모임에서는 조용히 있어야 합니다. 그 사람은 자기와 하나님께만 말하십시오. 29하나님의 말씀을 받아 전하는 사람*은 두 사람이나 세 사람이 말하고, 다른 사람들은 그들의 말을 면밀히 저울질해 보십시오. 30그러나 옆에 앉아 있던 사람에게 어떤 계시가 있거든, 처음 말하던 사람은 말을 멈추십시오. 31여러분 모두가 배우고 격려를 받으려면, 여러분 모두가 한 번에 한 사람씩 돌아가며 하나님에게서 받은 말씀을 전해야 합니다. 32하나님의 말씀을 받아 전하는 사람들은 자신들의 영을 다스릴 줄 알아야 합니다. 33하나님은 무질서의 하나님이 아니라 평화의 하나님이시기 때문입니다.
성도들의 모든 교회가 하고 있는 대로, 34여자들은 교회 안에서 조용히 있어야 합니다. 여자에게는 말할 권리가 없습니다. 모세의 율법이 가르치는 대로 여자들은 복종하십시오. 35알고 싶은 것이 있는 여자는 집에서 자기 남편에게 물어 보십시오. 여자가 교회 모임에서 말하는 것은 부끄러운 일입니다. 36하나님의 말씀이 여러분에게서 나왔습니까? 또는 여러분만이 그 말씀을 받았습니까? 37누구든 자기가 하나님의 말씀을 받아 전하는 사람*이라고 생각하거나 영적인 은사를 받았다고 생각하는 사람은, 내가 여러분에게 쓰는 이 말이 주님의 명령이라는 것을 인정해야 합니다. 38이것을 인정하지 않는 사람은, 그 자신도 하나님에게 인정 받지 못할 것입니다. 39그러므로 나의 형제자매 여러분, 여러분은 하나님의 말씀을 받아 전할 수 있게 되기를 간절히 바라십시오. 그리고 여러 가지 다른 언어로 말하는 것* 을 막지 마십시오. 40그러나 모든 일을 적절하게 또 질서 있게 해야 합니다. |
