Seven Men Chosen for a Special Work1More and more people were becoming followers of Jesus. But during this same time, the Greek-speaking followers began to complain against the other Jewish followers. They said that their widows were not getting their share of what the followers received every day. 2The twelve apostles* called the whole group of followers together.
The apostles said to them, “It would not be right for us to give up our work of teaching God’s word in order to be in charge of getting food to people. 3So, brothers and sisters, choose seven of your men who have a good reputation. They must be full of wisdom and the Spirit*. We will give them this work to do. 4Then we can use all our time to pray and to teach the word of God.” 5The whole group liked the idea. So they chose these seven men: Stephen (a man with great faith and full of the Holy Spirit), Philip*, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolaus (a man from Antioch who had become a Jew). 6Then they put these men before the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on* them. 7The word of God was reaching more and more people. The group of followers in Jerusalem became larger and larger. Even a big group of Jewish priests believed and obeyed.
Some Jews Against Stephen 8Stephen received a great blessing. God gave him power to do great wonders* and miraculous signs* among the people. 9But some of the Jews there were from the synagogue* of Free Men*, as it was called. The group included Jews from Cyrene, Alexandria, Cilicia, and Asia*. They started arguing with Stephen. 10But the Spirit* was helping him speak with wisdom. His words were so strong that these Jews could not argue with him. 11So they told some men to say, “We heard Stephen say bad things against Moses* and against God!” 12By doing this, these Jews upset the people, the older Jewish leaders, and the teachers of the law. They became so angry that they came and grabbed Stephen and took him to a meeting of the high council. 13The Jews brought some men into the meeting to tell lies about Stephen. These men said, “This man is always saying things against this holy place and against the Law of Moses. 14We heard him say that Jesus from Nazareth will destroy this place and change what Moses told us to do.” 15Everyone there in the council meeting was staring at Stephen. They saw that his face looked like the face of an angel. |

사도들을 돕기 위해 일곱 사람을 뽑다 1예수를 따르는 사람들의 수가 점점 늘어나고 있었다. 그런데 그리스 말을 쓰는 믿는 이들이 아람 말을 쓰는 다른 믿는 이들을 두고 불평하는 일이 있었다. 날마다 믿는 이들이 식량을 나누어 받을 때, 자기네 홀어미들이 푸대접을 받고 있다는 것이었다. 2열두 사도는 믿는 이들을 모두 한 자리에 불러 놓고 말하였다. “우리가 먹을 것을 나누어 주는 일에 매달려서, 하나님의 말씀을 전하는 일을 게을리 하는 것은 옳지 않습니다. 3그러니 형제자매 여러분, 여러분 가운데서 일곱 사람을 뽑으십시오. 그들은 뭇사람에게서 우러름을 받고, 지혜와 성령이 가득한 사람들이어야 합니다. 우리는 그 사람들에게 이 섬기는 일을 맡기겠습니다. 4그런 다음 우리는 기도하고 하나님의 말씀을 전하는 일에 힘쓰겠습니다.” 5모든 사람이 좋은 제안이라고 생각하였다. 그들은 믿음이 깊고 성령이 충만한 스데반과 더불어, 빌립*과, 브로고로와, 니가노르와, 디몬과, 바메나와, 니골라를 뽑았다. 니골라는 안디옥 출신으로 유대교로 개종한 사람이었다. 6그들은 그 일곱 사람을 사도들 앞에 세웠다. 사도들은 기도하고 그들에게 손을 얹었다.* 7하나님의 말씀이 더 많은 사람에게 퍼져나갔다. 예루살렘에서 제자의 수가 빠르게 늘어났다. 유대 제사장들 가운데서도 많은 사람이 예수를 믿고 믿음에 순종하였다.
유대 사람들이 스데반과 맞서다 8하나님의 축복과 능력이 충만한 사람 스데반은 백성들 가운데서 크고 놀라운 일들과 표적*을 행하였다. 9그러나 어떤 유대 사람들이 들고 일어나 스데반과 논쟁을 벌이기 시작하였다. 이 유대 사람들은 이른바 ‘해방 노예의 회당’* 사람들로서, 구레네와 알렉산드리아와 길리기아와 아시아 지방에서 온 사람들이었다. 10그러나 성령의 도우심을 받아 스데반이 지혜롭게 말하였으므로 그들은 스데반을 당해 낼 수 없었다. 11그러자 그들은 은밀하게 몇 사람을 꼬드겨 이렇게 말하게 하였다. “우리는 스데반이 모세와 하나님을 모독하여 말하는 것을 들었다.” 12그들은 이렇게 하여 백성들과 장로들과 율법 선생들을 부추겼다. 그들은 스데반을 붙잡아 의회*로 끌고 갔다. 13그들은 거짓 증인 몇 사람을 만들어 냈다. 그 거짓 증인들은 스데반을 두고 이렇게 증언하였다. “이 사람은 이 거룩한 곳(성전)과 모세의 율법을 계속하여 나쁘게 말하고 있습니다. 14우리는 그가, 이 나사렛 예수라는 사람이 이곳을 무너뜨리고 모세가 우리에게 전해 준 관습들도 바꾸어 놓을 것이라고 말하는 것을 들었습니다.” 15그러자 의회에 앉아 있던 사람들이 모두 스데반을 뚫어지게 바라보았다. 그들은 그의 얼굴이 마치 천사의 얼굴과 같은 것을 보았다. |
