Jesus Is Tempted by the Devil (Mt. 4:1-11; Mk. 1:12-13)1Now filled with the Holy Spirit*, Jesus returned from the Jordan River. And then the Spirit led him into the desert. 2There the devil tempted Jesus for 40 days. Jesus ate nothing during this time, and when it was finished, he was very hungry. 3The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this rock to become bread.” 4Jesus answered, “The Scriptures* say,
‘It is not just bread that keeps people alive.’”* 5Then the devil took Jesus and in a moment of time showed him all the kingdoms of the world. 6The devil said to him, “I will make you king over all these places. You will have power over them, and you will get all the glory*. It has all been given to me. I can give it to anyone I want. 7I will give it all to you, if you will only worship me.” 8Jesus answered, “The Scriptures say,
‘You must worship the Lord your God. Serve only him.’”* 9Then the devil led Jesus to Jerusalem and put him on a high place at the edge of the Temple* area. He said to him, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! 10The Scriptures say,
‘God will command his angels to take care of you.’* 11It is also written,
‘Their hands will catch you so that you will not hit your foot on a rock.’”* 12Jesus answered, “But the Scriptures also say,
‘You must not test the Lord your God.’”* 13The devil finished tempting Jesus in every way and went away to wait until a better time.
Jesus Begins His Work in Galilee (Mt. 4:12-17; Mk. 1:14-15) 14Jesus went back to Galilee with the power of the Spirit*. Stories about him spread all over the area around Galilee. 15He began to teach in the synagogues*, and everyone praised him.
Jesus Goes to His Hometown (Mt. 13:53-58; Mk. 6:1-6) 16Jesus traveled to Nazareth, the town where he grew up. On the Sabbath* day he went to the synagogue* as he always did. He stood up to read. 17The book of Isaiah the prophet* was given to him. He opened the book and found the place where this is written: 18“The Spirit of the Lord is on me.
He has chosen me to tell good news to the poor.
He sent me to tell prisoners that they are free and to tell the blind that they can see again.
He sent me to free those who have been treated badly 19and to announce that the time has come for the Lord to show his kindness.”* 20Jesus closed the book, gave it back to the helper, and sat down. As everyone in the synagogue watched him closely, 21he began to speak to them. He said, “While you heard me reading these words just now, they were coming true!” 22Everyone there said good things about Jesus. They were amazed to hear him speak such wonderful words. They said, “How is this possible? Isn’t he Joseph’s son?” 23Jesus said to them, “I know you will tell me the old saying: ‘Doctor, heal yourself.’ You want to say, ‘We heard about the things you did in Capernaum*. Do those same things here in your own hometown!’” 24Then he said, “The truth is, a prophet is not accepted in his own hometown. 25-26“During the time of Elijah* it did not rain in Israel for three and a half years. There was no food anywhere in the whole country. There were many widows in Israel during that time. But the fact is, Elijah* was sent to none of those widows in Israel. He was sent only to a widow in Zarephath, a town in Sidon. 27“And there were many people with leprosy* living in Israel during the time of the prophet Elisha*. But none of them were healed; the only one was Naaman. And he was from the country of Syria, not Israel.” 28When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were very angry. 29They got up and forced Jesus to go out of town. Their town was built on a hill. They took Jesus to the edge of the hill to throw him off. 30But he walked through the middle of the crowd and went away.
Jesus Frees a Man From an Evil Spirit (Mk. 1:21-28) 31Jesus went to Capernaum, a city in Galilee. On the Sabbath* day he taught the people. 32They were amazed at his teaching because he spoke with authority. 33In the synagogue* there was a man who had an evil spirit from the devil inside him. The man shouted loudly, 34“Jesus of Nazareth! What do you want with us? Did you come here to destroy us? I know who you are - God’s Holy One!” 35But Jesus warned the evil spirit to stop. He said, “Be quiet! Come out of the man!” The evil spirit threw the man down on the ground in front of everyone. Then the evil spirit left the man and did not hurt him. 36The people were amazed. They said to each other, “What does this mean? With authority and power he commands evil spirits and they come out.” 37And so the news about Jesus spread to every place in the whole area.
Jesus Heals Peter’s Mother-in-Law (Mt. 8:14-17; Mk. 1:29-34) 38Jesus left the synagogue* and went to Simon’s* house. Simon’s mother-in-law was very sick. She had a high fever. They asked Jesus to do something to help her. 39He stood very close to her and ordered the sickness to go away. The sickness left her, and she got up and began serving them.
Jesus Heals Many Others 40When the sun went down, the people brought their sick friends to Jesus. They had many different kinds of sicknesses. Jesus laid his hands on* each sick person and healed them all. 41Demons came* out of many people. The demons shouted, “You are the Son of God.” But Jesus gave a strong command for the demons not to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah*.
Jesus Goes to Other Towns (Mk. 1:35-39) 42The next day Jesus went to a place to be alone. The people looked for him. When they found him, they tried to stop him from leaving. 43But he said to them, “I must tell the Good News* about God’s kingdom* to other towns too. This is why I was sent.” 44Then Jesus told the Good News in the synagogues* in Judea. |

악마에게 시험당하시다 (마 4:1-11; 막 1:12-13) 1예수께서 성령으로 가득 차서 요단 강*에서 돌아오셨다. 그리고 성령에 이끌려 광야로 가셨다. 2예수께서는 그곳에서 사십 일 동안 악마에게 시험을 받으셨다. 그 동안 예수께서는 아무것도 잡수시지 않아서, 그 기간이 끝날 때쯤 몹시 배가 고프셨다. 3악마가 예수께 말하였다. “네가 하나님의 아들이라면, 이 돌에게 빵이 되라고 말하여라.” 4예수께서 대답하셨다. “성경*에 이런 말씀이 있다.
‘사람이 빵으로만 사는 것이 아니다.’“ 신 8:3 5그러자 악마는 예수를 높은 곳으로 모시고 가서, 눈 깜짝할 사이에 세상 모든 나라를 다 보여 주었다. 6그리고 말하였다. “저 나라들이 가진 힘과 영광을 다 네게 주겠다. 저 나라들은 내 것이고, 내가 주고 싶은 사람에게 얼마든지 줄 수 있다. 7네가 나를 섬기면, 내가 이 모든 것을 네게 주겠다.” 8예수께서 대답하셨다. “성경에 이런 말씀이 있다.
‘네 주 하나님만 예배하고, 그분만을 섬겨라.’“신 6:13 9악마는 예수를 데리고 예루살렘으로 가서, 성전 꼭대기에 세워 놓고 말하였다. “네가 하나님의 아들이라면, 뛰어내려 보아라. 10성경에 이런 말이 있지 않느냐?
‘하나님께서 천사들을 시켜 너를 돌보게 하시리라.’시 91:11 11그리고 이런 말도 있다.
‘천사들이 손으로 너를 붙들어서, 네 발이 돌에 부딪히지 않게 하리라.’“시 91:12 12예수께서 대답하셨다. “성경에 이런 말씀도 있다.
‘주 너의 하나님을 시험하지 말아라.’“신 6:16 13악마는 온갖 방법으로 예수를 시험해 본 뒤, 더 좋은 때를 노리며 떠나갔다.
갈릴리에서 일을 시작하시다 (마 4:12-17; 막 1:14-15) 14예수께서는 성령의 능력을 가득히 받고 갈릴리로 돌아가셨다. 예수에 관한 이야기가 그 지방에 두루 퍼졌다. 15예수께서 유대 사람의 여러 회당*에서 가르치셨다 모든 사람이 그분을 칭찬하였다.
고향 마을로 가시다 (마 13:53-58; 막 6:1-6) 16예수께서 자라나신 나사렛으로 가셨다. 어느 안식일*에 늘 하시던 대로 회당으로 가셨다. 그리고 성경을 읽으려고 일어서셨다. 17예수께서는 예언자 이사야*가 쓴 예언서 두루마리를 받아서, 다음 말씀이 적힌 곳을 찾으셨다. 18”주의(하나님의) 영이 내게 내리셨다. 가난한 사람들에게 기쁜 소식을 전하라고 기름 부어 나를 택하셨다. 붙잡혀 있는 사람들에게 이제는 그들이 풀려나게 되고, 눈먼 사람들에게 이제는 그들이 보게 되고, 억눌려 고통당하는 사람들에게 이제는 그들이 고통에서 해방되었다고 알리라 하신다. 19주께서 은혜를 베푸시는 해가 왔다고 널리 알리라 하신다.”사 61:1-2 20그리고 두루마리를 말아서 시중 드는 사람에게 돌려주고 자리에 앉으셨다. 회당에 모인 모든 사람의 눈이 예수께 쏠렸다. 21예수께서 말씀하셨다. “이 성경 말씀은 너희가 듣는 가운데 오늘 이루어졌다.” 22사람들이 모두 예수를 칭찬하였다. 그리고 그분의 입에서 나오는 은혜로운 말씀에 놀라서 말하였다. “이 사람은 요셉의 아들이 아닌가?” 23예수께서 말씀하셨다. “너희들은 ‘의사야, 네 병이나 고쳐라.’ 하는 속담을 들어 내게 말하고 싶을 것이다. 너희가 ‘가버나움에서 했다는 모든 일을 여기 고향에서도 해 보이시오.’ 하고 말하고 싶어하는 줄 안다.” 24그리고 이어서 말씀하셨다. “내가 너희에게 분명히 말한다. 고향에서 환영받는 예언자*는 없다. 25내가 진정으로 너희에게 말한다. 예언자 엘리야* 때에도 이스라엘에 홀어미가 많았다. 그때 삼 년 반 동안 비가 오지 않아 온 땅에 큰 가뭄이 들었다. 26하나님께서는 많은 홀어미 가운데서 시돈 지방의 사렙다 마을에 있는 한 홀어미에게만 엘리야를 보내셨다. 27엘리사* 예언자 때에도 이스라엘에 나병 환자가 많았지만, 하나님께서는 아무도 고쳐 주지 않고 시리아 사람 나아만 한 사람만 고쳐 주셨다.” 28이 말을 듣고 회당에 모인 사람들은 잔뜩 화가 났다. 29사람들은 일어나 예수를 마을 밖으로 쫓아냈다. 그리고 마을 아래 벼랑 끝으로 데려가 밀어 떨어뜨리려고 하였다. 30그러나 예수께서는 사람들 한가운데를 뚫고 나가 그곳을 떠나셨다.
악령 들린 사람을 고치시다 (막 1:21-28) 31예수께서는 갈릴리의 가버나움 마을로 가셔서, 안식일*에 사람들을 가르치셨다. 32사람들은 예수의 말씀에 권위가 있는 것을 보고 놀랐다. 33그때 회당에는 더러운 귀신의 영에 사로잡힌 사람이 있었다. 그 사람이 큰 소리로 외쳤다. 34”아하! 나사렛 사람 예수시로군! 당신이 우리를 어쩔 셈이요? 우리를 없애러 오셨소? 나는 당신이 누구인지 알고 있소. 당신은 하나님의 거룩한 분이시오.” 35예수께서 악령을 꾸짖으며 말씀하셨다. “조용히 하라, 그리고 그 사람에게서 나가거라!” 그러자 귀신이 사람들 앞에 그 사람을 넘어뜨려 놓고 나갔으나, 그를 다치게 하지는 않았다. 36사람들이 놀라 서로 수군거렸다. “이게 어찌 된 일이지? 저 사람이 권위와 힘을 가지고 명령하니 악령도 나가는구나!” 37예수에 관한 이야기가 그 둘레의 모든 곳으로 퍼져 나갔다.
베드로의 장모를 고쳐 주시다 (마 8:14-17; 막 1:29-34) 38예수께서는 회당을 떠나 시몬*의 집으로 가셨다. 시몬*의 장모가 열병을 앓고 있었다. 사람들이 예수께 그 부인을 도와달라고 청하였다. 39예수께서 그 부인에게 다가가서 열병을 꾸짖으셨다. 그러자 열병이 물러가고, 부인은 곧 일어나 사람들의 시중을 들기 시작하였다.
많은 사람을 고쳐 주시다 40해가 질 무렵에 사람들이 여러 가지 병에 걸린 사람들을 예수께 데려왔다. 예수께서는 병자 하나하나에 손을 얹어 고쳐 주셨다. 41많은 사람 안에 들어 있던 귀신들도 나갔다. 귀신들은 나가면서 “당신은 하나님의 아들이십니다.”라고 소리쳤다. 그러나 예수께서는 그들을 꾸짖으시고, 그들이 말하는 것을 허락하지 않으셨다. 예수께서 그리스도*라는 것을 그들이 알고 있었기 때문이다.
다른 여러 마을에도 가시다 (막 1:35-39) 42날이 밝아 예수께서 혼자 조용한 곳으로 가시자 많은 사람이 예수를 찾았다. 그리고 예수를 찾아 만나자 자기들을 떠나지 마시라고 간청하였다. 43그러나 예수께서 말씀하셨다. “나는 다른 여러 마을에서도 하나님 나라의 기쁜 소식*을 알려야 한다. 나는 그 일을 하라고 보내심을 받았다.” 44예수께서는 계속 유대의 여러 회당*을 다니면서 기쁜 소식*을 전하셨다. |
