An Example From Marriage1Brothers and sisters, you all understand the Law of Moses*. So surely you know that the law rules over people only while they are alive. 2It’s like what the law says about marriage: A woman must stay married to her husband as long as he is alive. But if her husband dies, she is made free from the law of marriage. 3But if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, the law says she is guilty of adultery*. But if her husband dies, she is made free from the law of marriage. So if she marries another man after her husband dies, she is not guilty of adultery. 4In the same way, my brothers and sisters, your old selves died and you became free from the law* through the body of Christ. Now you belong to someone else. You belong to the one who was raised from death. We belong to Christ so that we can be used in service to God. 5In the past we were ruled by our sinful selves. The law made us want to do sinful things. And those sinful desires controlled our bodies, so that what we did only brought us spiritual death. 6In the past the law held us as prisoners, but our old selves died, and we were made free from the law. So now we serve God in a new way, not in the old way, with the written rules. Now we serve God in the new way, with the Spirit*.
Our Fight Against Sin 7You might think I am saying that sin and the law* are the same. That is not true. But the law was the only way I could learn what sin means. I would never have known it is wrong to want something that is not mine. But the law said, “You must not want what belongs to someone else.”* 8And sin found a way to use that command and make me want all kinds of things that weren’t mine. So sin came to me because of the command. But without the law, sin has no power. 9Before I knew the law, I was alive. But when I heard the law’s command, sin began to live, 10and I died spiritually. The command was meant to bring life, but for me it brought death. 11Sin found a way to fool me by using the command to make me die. 12Now the law is holy*, and the command is holy and right and good. 13Does this mean that something that is good brought death to me? No, it was sin that used the good command to bring me death. This shows how terrible sin really is. It can use a good command to produce a result that shows sin at its very worst.
The War Inside Us 14We know that the law* is spiritual, but I am not. I am so human. Sin rules me as if I were its slave. 15I don’t understand why I act the way I do. I don’t do the good I want to do, and I do the evil I hate. 16And if I don’t want to do what I do, that means I agree that the law is good. 17But I am not really the one doing the evil. It is sin living in me that does it. 18Yes, I know that nothing good lives in me - I mean nothing good lives in the part of me that is not spiritual. I want to do what is good, but I don’t do it. 19I don’t do the good that I want to do. I do the evil that I don’t want to do. 20So if I do what I don’t want to do, then I am not really the one doing it. It is the sin living in me that does it. 21So I have learned this rule: When I want to do good, evil is there with me. 22In my mind I am happy with God’s law. 23But I see another law working in my body. That law makes war against the law that my mind accepts. That other law working in my body is the law of sin, and that law makes me its prisoner. 24What a miserable person I am! Who will save me from this body that brings me death? 25I thank God for his salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord!
So in my mind I am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful self I am a slave to the law of sin. |

결혼의 예 1형제자매 여러분, 여러분이 모세의 법을 잘 알고 있으니 말씀드리는데, 법이란 사람이 살아 있는 동안에만 그 사람을 다스린다는 것을 모르십니까? 2예를 하나 들어 봅시다. 결혼한 여자는 남편이 살아 있는 동안에는 법으로 남편에게 매여 있습니다. 그러나 남편이 죽으면, 그 여자는 결혼법에서 풀려납니다. 3그 여자가 남편이 살아 있는 동안에 다른 남자와 결혼하면, 법은 그 여자를 간음한 여자라고 말합니다. 그러나 남편이 죽은 뒤에는 결혼법에서 자유로워집니다. 그래서 다른 남자와 결혼해도 그 여자는 간음한 여자가 되지 않습니다. 4형제자매 여러분, 여러분도 마찬가지입니다. 여러분은 그리스도의 죽음에 참여함으로써, 율법에는 죽임을 당하였습니다. 이제 여러분은, 다른 분 곧 죽은 사람들 가운데서 살아나신 그리스도와 결혼할 수 있게 되었습니다. 그것은, 우리로 하여금 하나님을 위하여 열매를 맺게 하려는 것입니다. 5지난날 우리가 이기적인 욕심만을 따라 살 때에는, 죄로 가득 찬 여러 열정이 우리 몸 속에서 활발하게 일하였습니다. 이 열정들은 율법으로 말미암아 자극을 받아서, 우리로 하여금 죽음에 이르는 악한 짓들을 저지르게 만들었습니다. 6지난날 우리는 법에 얽매여 있었습니다. 그러나 이제 우리는, 우리를 얽매고 있던 율법에 죽었기 때문에 율법에서 놓여났습니다. 그리하여 이제 우리는, 글로 쓰인 율법이 지시하는 옛 삶이 아니라, 성령*께서 지시하시는 새로운 삶 가운데서 하나님을 섬깁니다.
죄와의 싸움 7그렇다면 우리가 무슨 말을 해야겠습니까? 율법이 죄라고 말해야겠습니까? 결코 그렇지 않습니다. 정말로 나는 율법이 없었다면 죄가 무엇인지 몰랐을 것입니다. “탐내지 마라.” 하는 계명이 없었다면, 나는 탐내는 것이 정말로 어떤 것인지 몰랐을 것입니다. 8그런데 죄는, 이 계명이 제공하는 기회를 이용하여 내 속에 온갖 탐욕을 낳았습니다. 율법이 없으면 죄는 죽은 듯 가만히 있습니다. 9전에 나는 율법 없이 살았습니다. 그러나 계명이 들어오자 죄는 되살아나고 10나는 죽었습니다. 나는, 생명을 가져다주기로 되어 있는 바로 그 계명이 실제로는 죽음을 가져다주었음을 알았습니다. 11죄는 그 계명이 제공하는 기회를 이용하여 나를 속였으며, 또한 계명을 통하여 나를 죽였습니다. 12그렇다면 이렇게 결론지을 수 있습니다. 율법* 그 자체는 거룩합니다. 그리고 그 계명도 거룩하고 의로우며 선합니다. 13그러면 이렇게 선한 것이 제게 죽음을 가져왔습니까? 결코 그렇지 않습니다. 오히려 죄가 선한 것을 통하여 제게 죽음을 가져왔습니다. 그리하여 죄가 실제로 얼마나 끔찍한 것인지 알려지게 되었습니다. 죄는 그것의 악한 목적을 위하여 그 계명을 이용함으로써 완전히 악한 것이 되었습니다. 14우리는 율법이 성령*께로부터 나온 것임을 압니다. 그러나 저는 하나의 인간에 지나지 않으며, 죄의 종으로 팔린 몸입니다. 15나는 내가 하는 일을 알지 못합니다. 나는, 내가 하고 싶어하는 선한 일은 하지 않고 내가 미워하는 악한 일을 합니다. 16그런 일을 하면서도 그것을 하고 싶어하지 않는 것은, 율법이 선하다는 사실에 동의하는 것입니다. 17그렇다면, 그와 같은 일을 하는 것은 내가 아니라 내 안에 살고 있는 죄입니다. 18나는 내 안에 곧 나의 인간적인 본성 속에 선한 것이라고는 아무것도 살지 않는다는 것을 압니다. 내 안에 선한 일을 하고 싶은 마음은 있으나 그것을 실천할 힘은 없습니다. 19내가 하고 싶어하는 선한 일은 하지 않고, 오히려 하고 싶어하지 않는 악한 일을 줄곧 하고 있습니다. 20그러니 내가 하고 싶어하지 않는 일을 한다면, 그 일을 하는 것은 내가 아니라 내 안에 살고 있는 죄입니다. 21여기에서 나는 이런 법칙이 작용한다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 곧 내가 선한 일을 하고 싶어할 때에는, 악도 바로 거기에 나와 함께 있다는 사실입니다. 22나의 속사람은 하나님의 법을 즐거워합니다. 23그러나 내 몸 속에는 또 다른 법이 활동하고 있습니다. 그 법은 내 이성의 법과 싸웁니다. 내 몸 속에서 활동하고 있는 그 다른 법은 죄의 법입니다. 그 죄의 법이 나를 사로잡아서 자기의 포로로 만듭니다. 24나는 참으로 비참한 사람입니다! 누가 나를 죽을 운명에 놓인 이 몸에서 구해 내겠습니까? 25우리 주 예수 그리스도를 통하여 나를 구해 주신 하나님께 감사드립니다.
그러니, 나는 마음으로는 하나님의 법에 매인 종이지만, 인간적인 본성으로는 죄의 법에 매인 종입니다. |
