1So, do Jews have anything that others don’t have? Do they get any benefit from being circumcised? 2Yes, the Jews have many benefits. The most important one is this: God trusted the Jews with his teachings. 3It is true that some Jews were not faithful to God. But will that stop God from doing what he promised? 4No, even if everyone else is a liar, God will always do what he says. As the Scriptures say about him,
“You will be proved right in what you say, and you will win when people accuse you.”* 5When we do wrong, that shows more clearly that God is right. So can we say that God does wrong when he punishes us? (That’s the way some people think.) 6Of course not. If God could not punish us, how could he judge the world? 7Someone might say, “When I lie, it really gives God glory*, because my lie makes his truth easier to see. So why am I judged a sinner?” 8It would be the same to say, “We should do evil so that good will come.” Many people criticize us, saying that’s what we teach. They are wrong, and they should be condemned for saying that.
All People Are Guilty 9So are we Jews better than other people? No, we have already said that those who are Jews, as well as those who are not Jews, are the same. They are all guilty of sin. 10As the Scriptures* say,
“There is no one doing what is right, not even one. 11There is no one who understands.
There is no one who is trying to be with God. 12They have all turned away from him, and now they are of no use to anyone.
There is no one who does good, not even one.”* 13“Their words come from mouths that are like open graves. They use their lying tongues to deceive others.”*
“Their words are like the poison of snakes.”* 14“Their mouths are full of cursing and angry words.”* 15“They are always ready to kill someone. 16Everywhere they go they cause trouble and ruin. 17They don’t know how to live in peace.”* 18“They have no fear or respect for God.”* 19What the law* says is for those who are under the law. It stops anyone from making excuses. And it brings the whole world under God’s judgment, 20because no one can be made right with God by following the law. The law only shows us our sin.
How God Makes People Right 21But God has a way to make people right, and it has nothing to do with the law. He has now shown us that new way, which the law and the prophets* told us about. 22God makes people right through their faith in* Jesus Christ. He does this for all who believe in Christ. Everyone is the same. 23All have sinned and are not good enough to share God’s divine greatness*. 24They are made right with God by his grace*. This is a free gift. They are made right with God by being made free from sin through Jesus Christ. 25-26God gave Jesus as a way to forgive people’s sins through their faith in him. God can forgive them because the blood sacrifice of Jesus pays for their sins. God gave Jesus to show that he always does what is right and fair. He was right in the past when he was patient and did not punish people for their sins. And in our own time he still does what is right. God worked all this out in a way that allows him to judge people fairly and still make right any person who has faith in Jesus. 27So do we have any reason to boast about ourselves? No reason at all. And why not? Because we are depending on the way of faith, not on what we have done in following the law. 28I mean we are made right with God through faith, not through what we have done to follow the law. This is what we believe. 29God is not only the God of the Jews. He is also the God of those who are not Jews. 30There is only one God. He will make Jews* right with him by their faith, and he will also make non-Jews* right with him through their faith. 31So do we destroy the law by following the way of faith? Not at all! In fact, faith causes us to be what the law actually wants. |

“하나님, 당신이 말씀하시면 당신이 옳으시다는 것이 증명되고,
당신이 법정에 서시면 반드시 이기십니다.”시 51:4
라고 기록된 것과 같습니다. 5우리가 저지르는 불의가 하나님의 의를 더욱 분명하게 드러냅니다. 그렇다고 해서, 우리에게 진노하시는 하나님이 옳지 않다고 말할 수 있겠습니까? (나는 지금 사람들이 논쟁하는 방식을 빌려 말하고 있습니다.) 6결코 그렇지 않습니다. 하나님께서 우리를 벌하실 수 없다면, 어떻게 세상을 심판하실 수 있겠습니까? 7어떤 사람은 이런 식으로 말할지 모르겠습니다. “나의 허위가 하나님의 진실하심을 더욱 드러내서 그분께 더 큰 영광이 돌아간다면, 어찌하여 내가 여전히 죄인으로 정죄 받아야 하는가?” 8그렇다면 아예 “선한 결과를 얻기 위해서, 악한 일을 하자.”라는 말이 나올 만도 하지 않습니까? (사실 우리가 그런 말을 한다고 하면서 나를 헐뜯는 사람들이 있습니다.) 그렇게 말하는 사람들은 정죄를 받아 마땅합니다.
모든 사람이 죄인이다 9그렇다면 우리가 무슨 결론을 내려야겠습니까? 우리 유대 사람이 이방 사람보다 나은 점이 있습니까? 결코 없습니다. 우리는 이미 유대 사람이나 이방 사람이나 똑같이 모두 죄의 다스림 아래 있다고 말하였습니다. 10성경*에도 이런 말씀이 있습니다.
“의로운 사람은 아무도 없다. 단 한 사람도 없다. 11하나님과 하나님의 뜻을 깨닫는 사람도 없고,
하나님을 찾는* 사람도 없다. 12모두가 주께 등을 돌리고,
다 같이 쓸모없는 인간이 되어 버렸다.
선한 일을 하는 사람은 없다. 단 한 사람도 없다.”시 14:1-3 13”그들의 목구멍은 열린 무덤이며 그들의 혀는 거짓말을 일삼는다.”시 5:9
“그들의 입술에는 독사의 독이 흐른다.”시 140:3 14”그들의 입은 저주와 미움의 말로 가득 차 있다.”시 10:7 15”그들의 발은 피 흘리는 일에 빠르고 16간 데마다 파괴와 비참을 남긴다. 17그들은 평화의 길을 알지도 못한다.”사 59:7-8 18”그들의 눈에는 하나님을 두려워하는 기색이 없다.”시 36:1 19우리는, 율법 아래 있는 사람들은 그 율법이 명하는 모든 것의 지배를 받는다는 것을 압니다. 그렇기 때문에 아무도 자랑하거나 핑계를 댈 수 없으며, 온 세상 사람이 하나님 앞에서 심판을 받게 된 것입니다. 20어느 누구도 율법을 지키는 것으로는, 하나님 앞에서 의롭다는 판결을 받을 수 없습니다. 우리는 율법을 통해서 죄가 무엇인지 알 수 있을 따름입니다.
하나님께서 우리를 어떻게 의롭게 하시는가? 21그러나 이제 율법과는 상관없이 하나님의 의가 밝히 알려졌습니다. 그것은 율법과 예언자들이 증언하고 있는 것입니다. 22이 하나님의 의*는 예수 그리스도를 믿는 믿음을 통해서* 모든 믿는 사람을 구원합니다. 유대 사람과 이방 사람 사이에 아무런 차별이 없습니다. 23모든 사람이 죄를 지어, 하나님께서 주셨던 본래의 영광스러운 모습에 미치지 못하기 때문입니다. 24그러나 이제는 하나님께서 모든 사람을 받아 주셨습니다. 그것은 하나님께서 거저 주시는 은혜의 선물입니다. 하나님께서는 그리스도 예수를 통하여 그들을 죄에서 해방시켜 주심으로써, 그들을 모두 받아 주셨습니다. 25하나님께서는 죄를 용서해 주시려고 그리스도 예수를 희생 제물로 내주셨습니다. 그리하여 예수께서는 죽임을 당하시고 피를 흘리셨습니다. 그 덕분으로 사람은 믿음을 통하여 죄를 용서받습니다. 하나님께서 이렇게 하신 것은, 그리스도가 하나님의 의*를 나타내는 확실한 징표가 되게 하시려는 것이었습니다. 26그렇습니다. 하나님께서는, 그리스도가 지금 이때에 하나님 자신의 의를 나타내는 분명한 징표가 되게 하셨습니다. 이 모든 일에 있어서 하나님께서 뜻하시는 것은, 예수를 믿는 믿음으로* 사는 사람을 받아 주시는 바로 그 행위에 있어서 당신께서 공정하시려는 것입니다. 27그렇다면 자랑할 근거가 남아 있습니까? 아닙니다. 전혀 자랑할 수 없게 되었습니다! 무슨 법에 따라 자랑할 수 없게 되었습니까? 행위를 요구하는 법에 따라 자랑할 수 없게 되었습니까? 아닙니다. 오히려 믿음의 관점에서 보는 법에 따라 자랑할 수 없게 되었습니다. 28우리는 사람이, 율법이 요구하는 행위와는 상관없이, 믿음으로 받아 주심을 얻는다고 확신하기 때문입니다. 29하나님은 유대 사람만의 하나님이십니까? 이방 사람의 하나님도 되시지 않습니까? 예, 그분은 이방 사람의 하나님도 되십니다. 30하나님께서 믿음으로 유대 사람*을 받아 주신다면, 그리고 그분이 다만 한 분이신 하나님이시라면, 틀림없이 이방 사람*도 믿음을 통하여 받아 주실 것입니다. 31그렇다면, 우리가 이 믿음으로 율법을 없애 버립니까? 결코 아닙니다! 오히려 우리는 율법을 든든하게 세웁니다. |
