The Right Way to Live1Remind your people that they should always be under the authority of rulers and government leaders. They should obey these leaders and be ready to do good. 2Tell them not to speak evil of anyone but to live in peace with others. They should be gentle and polite to everyone. 3In the past we were foolish too. We did not obey, we were wrong, and we were slaves to the many things our bodies wanted and enjoyed. We lived doing evil and being jealous. People hated us and we hated each other. 4But then the kindness and love of God our Savior was made known. 5He saved us because of his mercy, not because of any good things we did. He saved us through the washing that made us new people. He saved us by making us new through the Holy Spirit*. 6God poured out to us that Holy Spirit fully through Jesus Christ our Savior. 7We were made right with God by his grace*. God saved us so that we could be his children and look forward to receiving life that never ends. 8This is a true statement.
And I want you to be sure that the people understand these things. Then those who believe in God will be careful to use their lives for doing good. These things are good and will help everyone. 9Stay away from those who have foolish arguments, who talk about useless family histories, or who make trouble and fight about what the Law of Moses teaches. These things are useless and will not help anyone. 10Give a warning to all those who cause arguments. If they continue to cause trouble after a second warning, then don’t associate with them. 11You know that people like that are evil and sinful. Their sins prove they are wrong.
Final Instructions and Greetings 12I will send Artemas and Tychicus to you. When I send them, try hard to come to me at Nicopolis. I have decided to stay there this winter. 13Zenas the lawyer and Apollos will be traveling from there. Do all that you can to help them prepare for their trip. Be sure that they have everything they need. 14Our people must learn to use their lives for doing good and helping anyone who has a need. Then they will not have empty lives. 15All the people with me here send you their greetings. Give my greetings to those who love us in the faith.

올바르게 사는 길 1그대는 교우들을 깨우쳐서, 통치자들과 집권자들에게 복종하게 하여라. 그리고 그들의 말에 순종하며, 언제나 선한 일을 할 준비를 갖추게 하여라. 2아무도 헐뜯지 말며, 다투지 말고, 부드러우며, 모든 사람을 예의 바르게 대하게 하여라. 3우리도 한때는 어리석었고, 순종하지 않았으며, 다른 사람들의 말에 속아 잘못된 길로 빠졌었다. 그리고 온갖 욕망과 쾌락의 종으로 매여 살기도 하였다. 우리는 악한 마음과 시기심 속에서 살았다. 그리고 남에게 미움을 받기도 하고, 서로 미워하기도 하면서 살았다. 4그러나 우리 구세주 하나님께서 자비와 사랑을 나타내셔서 5우리를 구원하셨다. 그것은 우리가 무슨 의로운 일을 했기 때문이 아니라, 오직 그분이 자비로우신 분이기 때문이다. 하나님께서는 성령*을 통하여 우리의 죄를 깨끗이 씻어서 다시 나게 하시고 새롭게 해 주심으로써 우리를 구원하셨다. 6하나님께서는 우리 구세주 예수 그리스도를 통하여 우리에게 성령을 넘치게 부어 주셨다. 7그것은, 우리가 하나님의 은혜로 의롭게 되어서, 영원한 생명에 대한 희망을 가진 그분의 상속자가 되게 하시려는 것이었다. 8이것은 틀림없는 말이다.
그대는 이런 점들을 강조해서 가르쳐라. 그리하여 하나님을 믿고 의지하는 사람들이 선한 일을 하는 데 온 마음을 쏟게 하여라. 선한 일은 아름다우며 모든 사람에게 도움이 된다. 9그러나 그대는 어리석은 말다툼이나, 족보에 관한 이야기나, 논쟁이나, 율법에 관한 싸움은 피하여라. 이런 것들은 유익이 되지 않고, 아무짝에도 쓸모없는 것들이기 때문이다. 10분열을 일으키는 사람은 한번 타일러 보고, 그래도 듣지 않으면 두 번까지는 타일러라. 그 뒤로는 아는 체도 하지 마라. 11그런 사람은 비뚤어지고 죄로 가득 찬 사람이라고 믿어도 좋다. 그런 사람은 자기 자신을 정죄하고 있다.
기억해야 할 몇 가지 것들 12내가 아데마와 두기고 두 사람 가운데 한 사람을 그대에게 보내는 대로 그대는 서둘러 니고볼리로 나를 찾아오너라. 나는 그곳에서 겨울을 나기로 하였다. 13법률가 세나와 아폴로*가 여행하는 데에 부족한 것이 없도록, 필요한 모든 것을 갖추어 주어라. 14우리 교우들도 선한 일에 힘을 써서 남을 위하여 날마다 쓸 것을 마련해 줄 줄 알아야 한다. 그래야 그들이 아무 열매도 맺지 못하는 사람들이 되지 않을 것이다. 15나와 함께 모든 사람이 그대에게 문안한다. 믿음 안에서 우리를 사랑하는 사람들에게 문안하여 주어라.
