Jesus and Nicodemus1There was a man named Nicodemus, one of the Pharisees*. He was an important Jewish leader. 2One night he came to Jesus and said, “Teacher, we know that you are a teacher sent from God. No one can do these miraculous signs* that you do unless they have God’s help.” 3Jesus answered, “I assure you, everyone must be born again. Anyone who is not born again cannot be in God’s kingdom*.” 4Nicodemus said, “How can a man who is already old be born again? Can he go back into his mother’s womb and be born a second time?” 5Jesus answered, “Believe me when I say that everyone must be born from water and the Spirit.* Anyone who is not born from water and the Spirit cannot enter God’s kingdom. 6The only life people get from their human parents is physical. But the new life that the Spirit gives a person is spiritual. 7Don’t be surprised that I told you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8The wind blows wherever it wants to. You hear it, but you don’t know where it is coming from or where it is going. It is the same with everyone who is born from the Spirit.” 9Nicodemus asked, “How is all this possible?” 10Jesus said, “You are an important teacher of Israel*, and you still don’t understand these things? 11The truth is, we talk about what we know. We tell about what we have seen. But you people don’t accept what we tell you. 12I have told you about things here on earth, but you do not believe me. So I’m sure you will not believe me if I tell you about heavenly things! 13The only one who has ever gone up to heaven is the one who came down from heaven - the Son of Man*. 14“Moses lifted up the snake in the desert*. It is the same with the Son of Man. He must be lifted up too. 15Then everyone who believes in him can have eternal life.”* 16Yes, God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him would not be lost but have eternal life. 17God sent his Son into the world. He did not send him to judge the world guilty, but to save the world through him. 18People who believe in God’s Son are not judged guilty. But people who do not believe are already judged, because they have not believed in God’s only Son. 19They are judged by this fact: The light* has come into the world. But they did not want light. They wanted darkness*, because they were doing evil things. 20Everyone who does evil hates the light. They will not come to the light, because the light will show all the bad things they have done. 21But anyone who follows the true way comes to the light. Then the light will show that whatever they have done was done through God.
Jesus and John the Baptizer 22After this, Jesus and his followers went into the area of Judea. There he stayed with his followers and baptized* people. 23John was also baptizing people in Aenon, a place near Salim with plenty of water. People were going there to be baptized. 24This was before John was put in prison. 25Some of John’s followers had an argument with another Jew about religious washing*. 26Then they came to John and said, “Teacher, remember the man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan River? He is the one you were telling everyone about. He is also baptizing people, and many are going to him.” 27John answered, “A person can receive only what God gives. 28You yourselves heard me say, ‘I am not the Messiah*. I am only the one God sent to prepare the way for him.’ 29The bride always belongs to the bridegroom*. The friend who helps the bridegroom just waits and listens. He is happy just to hear the bridegroom talk. That’s how I feel now. I am so happy that he is here. 30He must become more and more important, and I must become less important.
The One Who Comes From Heaven 31“The one who comes from above is greater than all others. The one who is from the earth belongs to the earth. He talks about things that are on the earth. But the one who comes from heaven is greater than all others. 32He tells what he has seen and heard, but people don’t accept what he says. 33Whoever accepts what he says has given proof that God speaks the truth. 34God sent him, and he tells people what God says. God gives him the Spirit* fully. 35The Father loves the Son and has given him power over everything. 36Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. But those who do not obey the Son will never have that life. They cannot get away from God’s anger.” |

예수와 니고데모 1바리새파* 사람 가운데 니고데모라는 사람이 있었다. 그는 유대 의회* 의원이었다. 2그가 어느 날 밤에 예수를 찾아와 말씀드렸다. “랍비님, 우리는 당신이 하나님께로부터 오신 분인 것을 알고 있습니다. 하나님의 도움 없이는 아무도 선생님께서 보여 주시는 표적*을 행할 수 없기 때문입니다.” 3그러자 예수께서 말씀하셨다. “내가 진정으로 말한다. 누구든지 다시 태어나지 않으면* 하나님 나라를 볼 수 없다.” 4니고데모가 물었다. “사람이 나이를 먹으면 어떻게 다시 태어날 수 있습니까? 어머니의 뱃속에 다시 들어갔다가 태어날 수는 없지 않습니까!” 5예수께서 대답하셨다. “내가 진정으로 말한다. 누구든지 물과 성령*으로 태어나지 않으면 하나님 나라에 들어갈 수 없다. 6육체의 생명은 인간인 부모에게서 태어나지만, 영적인 생명은 성령께로부터 태어난다. 7’너희가 다시 태어나야 한다.’라는 내 말을 이상하게 여기지 말아라. 8바람은 불고 싶은 쪽으로 분다. 너는 바람 부는 소리를 들을 수는 있으나, 그 바람이 어디에서 불어오며, 또 어디로 가는지는 모른다. 성령으로 태어난 사람은 모두 이와 같다.” 9니고데모가 물었다. “어떻게 그런 일이 있을 수 있습니까?” 10예수께서 말씀하셨다. “너는 이스라엘의 선생이면서 내 말을 알아듣지 못하느냐? 11내가 진정으로 네게 말한다. 우리는 우리가 아는 것에 대하여 말하고, 우리가 본 것에 대하여 증언한다. 그런데도 너희는 우리의 증언을 받아들이지 않는다. 12내가 이 땅의 일에 대하여 말하는데도 너희는 믿지 않는다. 그러니 내가 하늘의 일을 말하면 너희가 어떻게 믿겠느냐? 13하늘에서 내려온 이, 곧 사람의 아들*밖에는 아무도 하늘에 올라간 사람이 없다. 14모세가 광야에서 뱀을 높이 들었다.* 그와 같이 사람의 아들도 들어 올려져야 한다. 15그것은, 사람의 아들을 믿는 사람이면 누구나 사람의 아들 안에서 영원한 삶을 누리게 하려는 것이다. 16하나님께서 세상을 어찌나 사랑하셨던지 당신의 외아들까지 주셨다. 그것은, 누구든지 그를 믿으면 멸망하지 않고 영원한 삶을 누리게 하려는 것이다. 17하나님께서 아들을 세상에 보내신 것은 세상을 정죄하려는 것이 아니라, 아들을 시켜 세상을 구원*하시려는 것이다. 18누구든지 하나님의 아들을 믿는 사람은 죄인으로 판결받지 않는다. 그러나 누구든지 믿지 않는 사람은 이미 죄인으로 판결받았다. 하나님의 외아들을 믿지 않았기 때문이다. 19빛이 하늘로부터 세상에 들어왔으나, 사람들은 빛보다 오히려 어둠을 원하였다. 자기들이 하는 짓이 악하기 때문이었다. 그래서 그들이 죄인으로 판결받은 것이다. 20누구든지 악한 일을 하는 사람은 빛을 미워한다. 그리고 자기의 악한 짓이 빛에 환히 드러나는 것이 두려워서 빛 속으로 들어오지 않는다. 21그러나 누구든지 진리를 따라 사는 사람은 빛 속으로 들어온다. 그것은 자기가 한 일이 하나님을 통하여 한 일이라는 것이 밝히 드러나게 하려는 것이다.”*
예수와 세례자 요한 22이런 일이 있고 난 뒤에, 예수와 제자들은 예루살렘을 떠나셨다. 그러나 계속하여 유대 지방에 머무시면서, 사람들에게 세례*를 주셨다. 23그런데 요한도 살렘에서 가까운 애논에서 세례*를 주고 있었다. 그곳에 물이 많았고, 사람들이 끊임없이 세례*를 받으러 왔기 때문이다. 24(이 일은 요한이 감옥에 갇히기 전의 일이다.) 25요한의 몇몇 제자들과 어떤 유대 사람 사이에 말다툼이 벌어졌다. 그들은 깨끗이 씻는 의식*을 두고 말다툼을 하였다. 26그들이 요한에게 와서 말하였다. “선생님, 선생님과 함께 있던 그 사람이 요단 강* 건너편에서 세례*를 주고 있습니다. 선생님께서는 그 사람에 대하여 증언도 하셨습니다. 그런데 모두들 그 사람에게로 몰려가고 있습니다.” 27요한이 대답하였다. “사람은 오직 하늘이 주시는 것만을 받을 수 있다. 28내가 이렇게 말한 적이 있다. ‘나는 그리스도*가 아닙니다. 나는 하나님께서 그분의 길을 준비하라고 앞서 보내신 사람일 따름입니다.’ 너희야말로 내가 이렇게 말한 것을 증언할 수 있는 사람들이다. 29신부를 차지하는 사람은 신랑이다. 신랑의 들러리를 서는 친구는 귀를 기울이고 있다가, 신랑의 목소리를 들으면 기쁨에 넘친다. 나는 지금 그런 기쁨으로 가득 차 있다. 30그분은 더욱 커지셔야 하고 나는 작아져야 한다.
하늘나라에서 오신 분 31위에서 오시는 이는 모든 사람 위에 뛰어나시다. 땅에서 난 사람은 땅에 속하며 땅의 것을 말한다. 하늘에서 오시는 분은 모든 사람 위에 뛰어나시다. 32그분은 직접 보고 들은 것을 증언하신다. 그러나 어느 누구도 그분의 증언을 받아들이지 않는다. 33그분의 증언을 받아들인 사람은, 하나님께서 참되시다는 것을 확증하였다. 34하나님께서 보내신 분은 하나님의 말씀을 전한다. 하나님께서 그분에게 성령*을 아낌없이 주시기 때문이다. 35아버지께서는 아드님을 사랑하셔서, 모든 것을 다스릴 권한을 아드님에게 주셨다. 36그러므로 누구든지 아드님을 믿는 사람은 영원한 삶을 누린다. 그러나 누구든지 아드님에게 순종하지 않는 사람은 결코 영원한 삶을 누리지 못할 것이다. 그 사람 위에는 도리어 하나님의 진노가 머물 것이다.”* |
