The Living Stone and the Holy Nation1So then, stop doing anything to hurt others. Don’t lie anymore, and stop trying to fool people. Don’t be jealous or say bad things about others. 2Like newborn babies hungry for milk, you should want the pure teaching that feeds your spirit. With it you can grow up and be saved. 3You have already tasted the goodness of the Lord. 4The Lord Jesus is the living stone*. The people of the world decided that they did not want this stone. But he is the one God chose as one of great value. So come to him. 5You also are like living stones, and God is using you to build a spiritual house*. You are to serve God in this house as holy* priests, offering him spiritual sacrifices* that he will accept because of Jesus Christ. 6The Scriptures* say,
“Look, I have chosen a cornerstone* of great value, and I put that stone in Zion*.
Anyone who trusts in him will never be disappointed.”* 7So, that stone brings honor for you who believe. But for those who don’t believe he is
“the stone that the builders refused to accept, which became the most important stone.”* 8For them he is also
“a stone that makes people stumble, a rock that makes people fall.”* People stumble because they don’t obey what God says. This is what God planned to happen to those people. 9But you are his chosen people, the King’s priests. You are a holy nation, people who belong to God. He chose you to tell about the wonderful things he has done. He brought you out of the darkness of sin into his wonderful light. 10In the past you were not a special people, but now you are God’s people.
Once you had not received mercy, but now God has given you his mercy.*
Live for God 11Dear friends, you are like visitors and strangers in this world. So I beg you to keep your lives free from the evil things you want to do, those desires that fight against your true selves. 12People who don’t believe are living all around you. They may say that you are doing wrong. So live such good lives that they will see the good you do, and they will give glory* to God on the day he comes.
Obey Every Human Authority 13Be willing to serve the people who have authority* in this world. Do this for the Lord. Obey the king, the highest authority. 14And obey the leaders who are sent by the king. They are sent to punish those who do wrong and to praise those who do good. 15When you do good, you stop ignorant people from saying foolish things about you. This is what God wants. 16Live like free people, but don’t use your freedom as an excuse to do evil. Live as those who are serving God. 17Show respect for all people. Love your brothers and sisters in God’s family. Respect God, and honor the king.
The Example of Christ’s Suffering 18Slaves, be willing to serve your masters. Do this with all respect. You should obey the masters who are good and kind, and you should obey the masters who are bad. 19One of you might have to suffer even when you have done nothing wrong. If you think of God and bear the pain, this pleases God. 20But if you are punished for doing wrong, there is no reason to praise you for bearing that punishment. But if you suffer for doing good and you are patient, this pleases God. 21This is what you were chosen to do. Christ gave you an example to follow. He suffered for you. So you should do the same as he did: 22“He never sinned, and he never told a lie.”* 23People insulted him, but he did not insult them back. He suffered, but he did not threaten anyone. No, he let God take care of him. God is the one who judges rightly. 24Christ carried our sins in his body on the cross. He did this so that we would stop living for sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you were healed. 25You were like sheep that went the wrong way. But now you have come back to the Shepherd and Protector of your lives. |

살아 있는 돌과 거룩한 민족 1그러므로 여러분은 모든 악의와 모든 거짓과 위선과 시기와 남을 헐뜯는 온갖 말을 버리십시오. 2갓난아기처럼 순수하고, 신령한 젖을 애타게 찾으십시오. 여러분이 그것을 먹고 자라 구원을 얻게 하려는 것입니다. 3여러분은 이미 주님이 얼마나 좋은 분이신지 맛보았습니다.* 4그리스도께서는 살아 있는 돌이십니다. 사람들에게는 버림을 받았으나, 하나님께는 택함을 받은 귀한 돌입니다. 이제 여러분은 그분께 나와 5살아 있는 돌이 되어, 신령한 집을 짓는 데 쓰이도록 하십시오. 그리고 거룩한 제사장이 되어 하나님께서 기쁘게 받으실 만한 신령한 제사를 예수 그리스도를 통하여 드리십시오. 6성경*에 이런 말씀이 있습니다.
“보아라, 내가 돌 하나를 시온*에 둔다.
내가 고른 귀한 모퉁이돌*이다.
그를 믿고 의지하는 사람은
결코 부끄러움을 당하지 않을 것이다.”사 28:16 7이제 이 돌이 믿는 여러분에게는 귀한 돌이지만, 믿지 않는 사람들에게는
“집 짓는 자들이 버린 돌이 모퉁이의 머릿돌이 되었다.”시 118:22
라고 말한 돌입니다. 8그리고
“사람들이 걸려 비틀거리게 하는 돌이며,
그들을 넘어지게 하는 바위” 사 8:14
이기도 합니다. 그들이 걸려서 비틀거리는 것은 하나님의 말씀에 순종하지 않기 때문입니다. 하나님께서는 그들이 그렇게 되도록 정해 놓으셨습니다. 9그러나 여러분은 하나님께서 택하신 민족이고, 왕의 제사장들이며, 거룩한 백성*이고, 하나님께 속한 백성입니다. 그것은, 여러분을 어둠으로부터 불러내어 놀라운 빛 가운데로 인도하신 하나님께서 행하신 놀라운 일들을, 여러분이 널리 전하게 하시려는 것입니다. 10여러분이 전에는 하나님의 백성이 아니었으나 지금은 그분의 백성이며, 하나님의 자비를 받지 못하였으나 이제는 자비를 받았습니다.
하나님을 위한 삶 11사랑하는 여러분, 나는 이 세상에서 거류민*과 같고, 나그네와 같은 여러분에게 간곡히 부탁합니다. 여러분의 영적인 본능과 싸우고 있는 육체의 욕망에 굴복하지 마십시오. 12여러분은 지금 이방 사람* 가운데서 살고 있습니다. 그 사람들이 여러분을 나쁜 짓을 하는 사람들이라고 비난할지도 모르겠습니다. 그러니 바르게 사십시오. 그들이 여러분의 선한 행실을 보고, 하나님께서 세상을 심판하러 오시는 날에 하나님께 영광을 돌릴 것입니다.
다스리는 자들에게 순종하여라 13여러분은 주님을 위해서 하나님께서 지으신 모든 인간에게 적절한 경의를 표하십시오. 최고의 권력자인 왕이나 14총독들을 존경하십시오. 총독들은 나쁜 짓을 하는 사람들에게는 벌을 주고, 옳은 일을 하는 사람들에게는 상을 주게 하려고, 왕이 보낸 사람들입니다. 15여러분은 선한 일을 하여, 어리석은 사람들의 무식한 말을 막으십시오. 그것이 하나님께서 바라시는 일입니다. 16여러분은 자유인답게 사십시오. 그러나 여러분의 자유를 핑계로 함부로 악을 행하지 마십시오. 오히려 하나님의 종으로 사십시오. 17모든 사람을 존경하십시오. 그리스도를 믿는 형제와 자매들을 사랑하십시오. 하나님을 두려워하고 왕을 높이 받드십시오.
고난을 당하신 그리스도의 모범 18종으로 살고 있는 여러분, 지극히 존경하는 마음으로 주인들에게 복종하십시오. 선하고 인정이 많은 주인뿐만 아니라 마음씨 고약한 주인에게도 복종하십시오. 19억울하게 고통을 당하면서도 하나님을 생각하고 괴로움을 참아 내면, 그것은 칭찬받을 만한 일입니다. 20나쁜 짓을 하고 매를 맞으면서 참는다면, 그것이 무슨 칭찬받을 일이겠습니까? 그러나 옳은 일을 하고도 당하는 고통을 참아 내면, 그것은 하나님께서 보시기에 칭찬할 만한 일입니다. 21여러분은 그렇게 살라고 부르심을 받았습니다. 그리스도께서는 여러분을 위해 고난을 당하심으로써, 여러분에게 본을 보여 주셨습니다. 그것은, 여러분도 그분의 발자취를 따르게 하려는 것입니다. 22”그분(그리스도)은 아무 죄도 지은 일이 없고,
그분의 입에선 아무런 거짓도 찾을 수 없었습니다.”사 53:9 23그분은 모욕을 당하시고도 모욕으로 갚지 않으셨습니다. 그분은 고통을 당하면서도, 자기를 괴롭히는 자들을 위협하지 않으셨습니다. 그분은 오직 바르게 심판하시는 분께 자신을 맡기셨습니다. 24그분은 우리의 죄를 몸소 짊어지시고 십자가로 가셨습니다. 우리로 하여금 죄에서 벗어나 의롭게 살게* 해 주시려는 것이었습니다. 그분이 입은 상처로 여러분이 나음을 얻었습니다. 25여러분이 전에는 마치 길 잃은 양과 같았으나, 이제는 여러분의 영혼의 목자이며 보호자이신 그분께 돌아왔습니다. |
