Obey Your Government Rulers1All of you must obey the government rulers. Everyone who rules was given the power to rule by God. And all those who rule now were given that power by God. 2So anyone who is against the government is really against something God has commanded. Those who are against the government bring punishment on themselves. 3People who do right don’t have to fear the rulers. But those who do wrong must fear them. Do you want to be free from fearing them? Then do only what is right, and they will praise you. 4Rulers are God’s servants to help you. But if you do wrong, you have reason to be afraid. They have the power to punish, and they will use it. They are God’s servants to punish those who do wrong. 5So you must obey the government, not just because you might be punished, but because you know it is the right thing to do. 6And this is why you pay taxes too. Those rulers are working for God, and they give all their time to the work of ruling. 7Give everyone what you owe them. If you owe them any kind of tax, then pay it. Show respect to those you should respect. And show honor to those you should honor.
Loving Others Is the Only Law 8You should owe nothing to anyone, except that you will always owe love to each other. The person who loves others has done all that the law* commands. 9The law says, “You must not commit adultery*, you must not murder anyone, you must not steal, you must not want what belongs to someone else.”* All these commands and all other commands are really only one rule: “Love your neighbor* the same as you love yourself.”* 10Love doesn’t hurt others. So loving is the same as obeying all the law. 11I say this because you know that we live in an important time. Yes, it is now time for you to wake up from your sleep. Our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12The night* is almost finished. The day* is almost here. So we should stop doing whatever belongs to darkness*. We should prepare ourselves to fight evil with the weapons that belong to the light*. 13We should live in a right way, like people who belong to the day. We should not have wild parties or be drunk. We should not be involved in sexual sin or any kind of immoral behavior. We should not cause arguments and trouble or be jealous. 14But be like the Lord Jesus Christ, so that when people see what you do, they will see Christ. Don’t think about how to satisfy the desires of your sinful self. |

통치자들에게 복종하라 1모든 사람은 자기를 다스리는 권세에 복종해야 합니다. 하나님께로부터 오지 않은 권세는 없기 때문입니다. 그리고 지금 있는 권세도 하나님께서 세워 주신 것입니다. 2그러므로 권세에 맞서는 사람은 하나님께서 만들어 세우신 것에 반항하는 것이며, 그렇게 하는 사람은 심판을 받을 것입니다. 3선한 일을 하는 사람은 통치자들을 두려워할 까닭이 없습니다. 오직 악한 일을 하는 사람만이 그들을 두려워합니다. 권세를 가진 사람을 두려워하는 일에서 벗어나고 싶으십니까? 그렇다면 선한 일을 하십시오. 그러면 그가 여러분을 칭찬할 것입니다. 4통치자들은 여러분의 이익을 위해서 일하는 하나님의 종들입니다. 그러나 여러분이 악한 일을 하면 두려워하십시오. 그들이 공연히 칼을 차고 있는 것이 아닙니다. 그들은 하나님의 종들로서, 하나님을 대신하여 악한 일을 하는 사람에게 벌을 내리는 일을 맡은 사람들입니다. 5그러므로 받게 될지도 모를 벌이 무서워서뿐만 아니라, 양심 때문에도 권세에 복종해야 합니다. 6또한 양심 때문에 여러분은 세금을 바칩니다. 통치자들은 하나님의 종들로서, 그들의 시간을 다스리는 일에 다 바치기 때문입니다. 7그러므로 여러분은 그들 모두에게 바쳐야 할 것을 바치십시오. 조공을 바쳐야 할 사람에게는 조공을 바치고, 관세를 바쳐야 할 사람에게는 관세를 바치십시오. 존경해야 할 사람은 존경하고, 존중히 여겨야 할 사람은 존중히 여기십시오.
다른 사람들을 사랑하는 것이 유일한 율법이다 8어느 누구에게도 진 빚을 갚지 않는 일이 없도록 하십시오. 그러나 여러분에게는 언제나 서로를 사랑해야 하는 빚이 있습니다. 다른 사람을 사랑하는 사람은 율법*을 다 이루었습니다. 9”간음*하지 마라. 살인하지 마라. 도둑질하지 마라. 탐내지 마라.”* 라는 계명들이 있습니다. 이 계명들과 그 밖에 다른 모든 계명들은, “네 이웃을 네 몸같이 사랑하여라.”*라는 이 한 말씀에 요약되어 있습니다. 10사랑은 이웃에게 해를 끼치지 않습니다. 그러므로 사랑하는 것은 모든 율법을 다 이루는 것입니다. 11내가 이런 말을 하는 것은, 여러분도 다 알고 있듯이 우리가 아주 중요한 시대에 살고 있기 때문입니다. 여러분이 잠에서 깨어날 때가 왔습니다. 우리가 처음 믿기 시작했을 때보다, 우리의 구원이 더 가까워졌기 때문입니다. 12밤*이 거의 다 지나고, 낮*이 가까웠습니다. 그러므로 우리는 어둠(죄)의 행실을 벗어 버리고 빛(선)의 갑옷을 입읍시다. 13낮에 행동하듯이 단정하게 처신합시다. 진탕 먹고 마시는 연회나 술 취함, 음행과 방탕, 싸움과 시기에 빠지지 맙시다. 14오히려 주 예수 그리스도로 옷을 입으십시오. 이기적 욕망을 만족시키려는 생각은 아예 하지 마십시오. |
